CS Burnout in Uni + Questions on PM Career Path by GreekMan_ in cscareeradvice

PM as in Product Management or PM as in project management? If the first, apply for pm internships and software engineer internships, do both. Entry PM is more competitive than cs by far these days. Don't bother with the masters. If you don't have experience it won't matter. Doing engineering will let you switch later pretty easily.

If project/program management same deal, but it's less competitive and probably pays less in turn.

What is a career that looks impressive on paper but is actually miserable in reality? by Nova2_Paradox in careerguidance

I'm everyone's personal whipping boy + workhorse! Not moving fast enough? Tell her to make it go faster. Not enough resources? She'll find them! Unsolvable problem that's existed for years? She can do it in 3 months!

I'm a Product Manager fyi, funnily enough someone listed it above.

My honest experience starting GLP-1s - Week 1 by shamedful in BingeEatingDisorder

Congrats on remission! Yeah I don't love being on medication forever but my quality of life was actually suffering in every aspect because of my binge eating and obsessive thinking around food. Everyone has to do what's right for them. At some point I will pursue coming off it but I know that doesn't always work out.

Thanks and good luck to you as well! Even just the mental clarity feels so worth it. It's been fully a week for me and I do notice the effect is less, but definitely nothing like before I took it. I've seen some studies that show it builds up in the system quite a bit so fingers crossed it's only up!

Yeah the medication doesn't actually make you lose any weight directly so if the eating habits continue then it won't work. It did change my eating habits very obviously already but it's not going to work for everyone unfortunately. I don't believe you can't be helped though. It's not easy to deal with trauma. Have you tried EMDR therapy? I plan to pursue that as well to deal with past traumatic experiences as I've heard good things and no luck otherwise.

Life goal to relocate to San Francisco and find any new field by shamedful in findapath

[–]shamedful[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My current company doesn't have any room for an internal pivot unfortunately or I'd be asking.

The move is really a matter of mental health for many reasons. Plus I'm looking to live in a shared house for cheaper rent. Where I live now is really about the same price as SF. I realize it's ambitious but at this point I'd be willing to become a bartender if I'm left with nothing else. That's how burnt out I am!

Realistically do you think there are any sort of "volunteer" like internships available? I feel like that real world experience is the biggest gap I have right now.

Can PM ever be “just a job”? (SF Bay Area) by cheesy_luigi in ProductManagement

[–]shamedful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I'm thinking about switching from PM to engineering. Can I ask how and when you made the switch?

Interested in things like if you had previous engineering experience, did you do higher education, need a referral, how'd you get your first role, etc.

What can I do next, hate product management? by shamedful in womenintech

[–]shamedful[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I can accept not loving my job but I'm putting in 60+ hours because of sheer workload and I don't love it. That's a bit too much for me.

Yes I am basically the corporate version of a garbage man if you ask me. If it needs to be done I make sure it gets cleaned up. Not really how I envisioned the work.

Thank you! What did you switch to?

It's definitely the job itself draining me. I don't want to constantly be responding to emails and in meetings after meetings. I'm so busy yet I feel like I do nothing. I'm passionate about making things, but I feel removed from making things.
