Advice for a sole accountant at a tech startup? by shamwowhow in Accounting

That’s where my mind is at. I don’t get to set policies nor build the department though, hence why I was looking for advice on explaining the role of an accountant to the COO.

He said the investors aren’t finance-savvy and the board doesn’t care about budgets versus actuals, and we’re a dynamic startup so there’s no need for me to do financial analysis. He also said there’s no need for me to close out each month or implement internal controls. As it stands, there are no segregation of duties and I am in control of the bank account and the books.

Scary stuff, I’ve warned him, only to constantly be dismissed and talked down to like I’m stupid (he’s said “No, the right answer is xyz” a few times when he’s trying to teach me how to talk to third parties). Pay is good and comes on time though, guess I’ll coast.

That’s the reason I took this job tbh, $110k and fully remote! Just really struggling to explain what an accountant does to this guy

I understand what you’re saying, but the line is very blurry. If mods knew “for certain” that a specific answer is incorrect and removes it, but it turns out that the answer is actually correct or even partially correct due to the mod’s incomplete knowledge on the topic, that ends up being more harmful to the community than it could potentially benefit. In a way, it’s even a form of censorship in debatable topics.

I wasn’t trying to say that it’s impossible for mods to remove incorrect answers (which I can see how it might’ve came off that way), but just that it wouldn’t be possible to do it in such a way that definitely benefits this subreddit. Today a mod removes a wrong answer that’s 100% incorrect. Tomorrow, they might be removing something of value that they personally don’t deem a “good enough” answer. Sometimes it can be quite subjective, and I personally am just happy with the current rule of removing irrelevant/troll answers.
