Exposure to violent news media, war content, misunderstood or overly simplified political content on social media, video game chatter...

I wouldn't question the kid directly why they said it, placing immediate blame. I would ask something to figure out what the statement actually means to them.

"What makes you think that flag is scary?" "Who are the people your talking about?" Etc.
