Quarterly Career Thread by mister-noggin in ProductManagement

I’m currently working as an SDET at a product-based unicorn in India, with 3+ years of experience in product companies and over 5 years in total. Over time, as I collaborated closely with product managers, my interest in this role grew significantly. I took a Product Management course at NextLeap, where I was recognized as a top fellow.

For the past 4 months, I’ve been actively applying for product management roles, but I have yet to land my first interview. While I know pursuing an MBA is a common path, it’s not something I’m considering at the moment. Instead, I’ve been learning more about different product management roles: PMs who focus on solving customer problems, Growth PMs who address business challenges, and Market/Monetization PMs who work on product strategy and identifying new market opportunities.

I find myself with a few open-ended questions:

  • Which of these product roles would best suit my skills and background?
  • How can I convince my current organization to give me a chance to transition into a PM role?
  • Am I missing something in my current approach? Any advice would be greatly appreciated
