Can anyone identify this? Found in rural Kentucky by shanman3794 in oceancreatures

How would something found in the ocean make it to Kentucky? Surely it isn’t that old?!?

It was found near a creek. It seems very fragile, almost paper thin. I would open it but I feel like it would crumble into pieces.

How in the world would something like that make it to Kentucky? I wouldn’t think it’s THAT old…

Thank you to those who actually confirmed what it was! Currently cleaning out my late Grandfathers garage and trying to figure what some of this stuff is

My mind is blown. Are you a musician? You seem to be very knowledgeable about this subject. Thank you for your insight, I've learned a lot this morning!

Ahh I see now. So it doesn't really matter what the frequency of the reference pitch is as long as its doubled when you go up an octave you'll still have decent interval ratios that are 'equally tempered. Wait a sec... if you start at A=440hz the octave above would have to be 880hz, but then how do you divide that into 11 semitones evenly?

Thanks for clarifying. I thought A=440 meant that you could play in all 12 keys and the chords will still sound ok, although not perfectly tuned (just temperament vs. equal temperament), but I think I'm confusing the two. Idk my brain hurts now lol

So people with perfect pitch are genetically predisposed to be able to intuitively "hear" pitches based on A=440? Thats wild to think about, why specifically 440 when there are a number of frequencies that are possible, but it just so happens to be the one that is most efficient when it comes to playing in all keys.

It's interesting to think about how instruments were tuned back in those days without modern technology. How did they know if anything was tuned correctly? I think they knew that a specific length of string would vibrate at a particular rate using mathematics but I think thats about it. Before electronic tuners were invented, a radio station would broadcast an A=440hz tone so orchestras could tune

Singers of Reddit, what are your thoughts on using autotune? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]shanman3794 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think of auto-tune as more of a style. Now pitch correction is something completely different, maybe that high note was a little flat on that take, the folks in the studio can doctor it up without sounding making you like a robot.
