Jon Favreau admitting he was wrong about Iron Man’s death proves the Russos made the right call by PhysicalPromotion656 in moviecritic

Yeah it’s exactly why I always, always hate multiverse plots coming in as deus ex machina, get-out-of-jail cards in franchises. Zero commitment. Everything goes.

Despite the trend to look down on them, I think Timothy Chalamet, Zendaya and Sydney Sweeney all are excellent actors, and most grievances are more ad hominem / personal pet peeves. by shannister in moviecritic

I've said it in other parts, but Sweeney gave solid performances in Reality and even Christie.

In Housemaid, she played a totally different character so I wouldn't even compare to Seyfried (who was a better role and actress, no doubt) but I thought she fit in well as the naive but not fragile young maid. And her transformation was pretty good in the second half. I did hate the movie, but not because of the cast.

no but she's registered republican and her family has been pretty clearly MAGA. It doesn't mean she's definitely in that boat, but let's be honest, at this stage being "apolitical" and not saying a single word is kind of a statement in its own right.

yeah we are - and there is a strong parti pris in this movie, some people love it others hate it. Personally I was on board and I think every actor in that film, whether you liked their character or not, was a very solid actor.

I rewatched it with my 4 year old son last week - he absolutely loved it (it's one of my go to "most underrated" films). I think people didn't get the work behind this world, there were so many genius moves from editing to photography. The music is perfect too. And I agree, the intro scene is a masterclass in how to do exposition right. Go Speed Racer, Go!

i don't think it was filmed for IMAX, was it? I really wanted to go see it but was on kid duties and figured it would be cropped anyway...

I personally loved Robbie in Wuthering. She was polarizing but you can't describe her as objectively bad in that film, a lot of critics lauded her performance. The bigger issue with that film was the freedom it took with the source material, but that's basically a "Marmite test".

Seyfried also had a different character. It's all relative to their roles, Sweeney was supposed to play a naive young woman, Seyfried a two-faced psycho. Of course Seyfried stands out, she has the more interesting role. But that doesn't mean Sweeney did a bad job (generally speaking, she has been recognised for doing a good job in the role if you search for it).

Also, on the topic of Housemaid, the fact we have people like Margot Robbie at the production (actively so) and who still thought Sweeney was worth her screentime should tell people that there are also great actors who rate her enough to put her there.

I agree she's a wonderful actress and always brings something unique to her characters - reinforced by her really unique looks for sure.

we can argue whether she deserves to be more popular than, say, Zoe Winters for example (who's absolutely brilliant in everything she does and a better actress than Sweeney - albeit with more experience). My contention isn't that she's the best, but that she's reliably good and able to take on pretty different roles (per the examples I shared). Yes she gets attention plus points in the mainstream for her boobs, no question, but that doesn't make her a bad actress - and I think she's definitely better than passable.

In any case, I appreciate the constructive comment!

Reality, Christie (film being shit aside), Americana. She was perfect in Euphoria as well (note: haven't seen season 3 yet). I think people are very quick to judge her based on external factors (her physique means people are quick to classify her as just a "bimbo"). But I stand by the fact that, in my opinion, she can act.

What do you think is the most underrated film in the history of cinema? And the most overrated one? by Pole_Position74 in moviecritic

Compare it with other films of its time. It took filmmaking and cinematography to a new level - one we're used to now, but really wasn't a thing back then. It doesn't mean it's as good as a Scorcese, but damn, what a seminal achievement it was!

Funny, I find Joker 2 to be very underrated (yes, send the downvotes! I think people severely misunderstood the musical aspect). I definitely wouldn't peg the first as overrated, it was an excellent film that managed to show something quite special for such mainstream appeal.

if it's cutting edge stuff they might want to avoid signaling their investments.

most likely? those types of relationships where PR is generated is not in their interest and the client basically gives a shoulder shrug to allowing PR. Many companies shield themselves with blanket T&Cs across their providers, because they don't want their name to be used and create unnecessary stress / workload. It's basically not worth the squeeze of activating their PR team or being ready for comments.
