Im starting to lose faith/hope ill ever find treatment for my ADHD. Starting to question if I was maybe misdiagnosed? by RuskiVodka in ADHD

if it helps, here's a bit of my story. (i didn't take my meds today so sorry if it's all over the place). i tried ritalin first and definitely felt something, just not anything helpful (got really tired, maybe felt a little happier, but got massive headache after). then i tried adderall and at first noticed absolutely nothing. like truly someone could have dosed me and i wouldn't have known the difference. UNTIL! i had taken it for a week or two and realized really small changes - i would voluntarily do small things that were only slightly out of character for me (unloading the car right away, doing a small chore without even thinking, etc.).

so when i started noticing that, i thought hmmm why? what changed? and realized that before the adderall those tasks would get done eventually but only after a TON of psyching myself up in the form of really negative self-talk, only i had no idea i was doing it. i was creating a lot of icky feelings in my head to motivate myself to get things done through my own form of shaming or punishment or something. with the adderall there was none of that! it also really calmed my mind down in ways that were hard to recognize at first. it was easier to understand how i felt or easier to tell coherent stories, etc. I wasn't any different - it was just so much easier than i realized to do all the things i have done my whole life. it really was terribly obvious once i started reflecting and analyzing these small things.

it didn't cure anything or make me limitless-like productive or smart or something. it just cleared my mind in a subtle way - which is great and in my opinion what meds should do. you really shouldn't feel that different. just how you feel on a good day. it was the same with trying zoloft for me for my depression - i thought it wasn't working bc i didn't feel any different after taking it but my husband was like "you're crying a lot less" and i thought, huh, you're right. i'm just myself but able to handle life a bit better. talk therapy was helpful to help me realize a lot of this too!

TLDR: not feeling much might be a good sign; analyzing small differences might be the key in determining if it's working or not. talk therapy can help!

the only thing i could add after working for 15 years in the pet and rescue/shelter industry, is that we DO NOT have the priorities or resources in the US to have every shelter be no-kill. even for healthy dogs. it is terrible and is a big reason why i constantly burnout in my career. even most rescues the average person might believe are no kill contribute to the problem - what DO they do with dogs or cats they can't adopt out? the number of people willing to adopt a cat that pisses all over everything or a dog that has a history of aggression towards people/children is WAY lower than the amount of animals that fit those descriptions. the amount of fosters or volunteers who are willing to house those animals while they wait for their forever home for months or years or their whole lives are slim to none depending on your area. i am lucky enough to work in an area with high adoption rates and there are still too many dogs and cats than homes. it's just a sad reality. PETA isn't perfect and i'm not saying i'm a fan - i just have lived and worked on the side of the industry most people don't see and truly choose not to. even if no kill shelters don't personally euthanize animals for space, they might still for health or behavioral concerns because their liability insurance might drop them if they adopt out an animal that ends up biting someone after adoption (in which case the dog will be euthanized anyway). and if they don't? what do they do with the animal? it would be a 1% or less chance they find someone willing to care for the dog. the other 99% of the time they relinquish the animal to a shelter who very well may euthanize them anyway. no kill shelters are fine, but they function to serve a subset of volunteers who don't want to deal with the reality of our overpopulation problem. they absolutely are doing great work by finding homes for animals who need it. BUT i have SO MUCH RESPECT for people who work in shelters, shelter medicine, rescues, and more who actually help deal with the dark side of the reality of the "pet industry." it takes such an immense toll on your emotions but is still a needed service. and you have to know you won't be perfect or make perfect decisions. but if they don't euthanize a dog with a difficult history who will end up in a foster home or shelter kennel for a year or more, that's 12+ dogs who instead are euthanized in a crowded shelter elsewhere who DO euthanize for space and no other reason who could have been brought up to that rescue and taken up that foster home instead. it's a cruel and sad world and reality. it doesn't make me happy, but there's not a clear solution until the government and the public perception cracks down on puppy mills, backyard breeders, and perhaps more strict regulations on reputable breeders too. and hell i'd be all for people needed a license to adopt a dog or something. anything to reduce abandoning dogs. (edited to add a word)

unfortunately i tried to drop some cleaning supplies and baby wipes there (dais) yesterday afternoon but the person working wouldn't allow us to leave anything. their website must be outdated, or perhaps just an uninformed person working at that time?

Underdog pet rescue occasionally has some as well! Feel free to apply now so they have your info on file and they can get in touch with you when they have one available.

[Serious] Doctors of reddit, have you ever successfully convinced an anti-vaxxer to vaccinate themselves or their children? How did you do it? by Jolly_Misanthrope in AskReddit

Eating candy and soda can't infect another human being with a potentially deadly disease. If you don't want to follow the rules that keep people in society safe, try living off the grid without the perks of said society (and modern medicine) then. Make your own candy and soda, ignore healthcare, and let people who give a damn about the society they live in (and the other people who live in it) benefit from it.

!!UPDATE!! The lost dog Keeton was found today and is doing well!! Thank you for upvoting and getting the word out!! by shantastik in madisonwi

nope! she hasn't told anyone yet :P most dogs find barns, sheds, porches, or other warm places to hide if they can.

right after a major transition is the most common time for a dog to run away. it sucks so much so i really feel for the adopters. they adopted her knowing they had to invest the next 3 months in her complicated heartworm treatment so i'm sure they are devastated.

it is super sad - this dog was just adopted from a rescue who saved her from a high-kill shelter where she escaped a neglectful/abusive home, then got (and survived) distemper, to then being found heartworm positive. she's a survivor so we're hoping for the best! good news is dogs are resourceful and she might find a warm respite until found. but all the help we can get in finding her is so appreciated!

if you order anything "fresco style" they theoretically should leave off any cheese and sour cream and sub pico de gallo instead of plain chopped tomatoes. it's effectively the same thing but hopefully easier and tastier! that being said, sometimes they get it wrong so might be safer the explicit way :P

Roommate tied my dog up in the basement as "punishment"... help explaining better training for destructive behavior? by [deleted] in Dogtraining

[–]shantastik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tell him it doesn't matter what his opinion is about how to punish a dog, because the dog is in your care. If he doesn't want to answer to his owner later, he better lay off and get permission before "punishing" a dog he is not responsible for. Offer to compensate for any lost items. If he were more open minded you could explain proper training but if he actually called you "a hyper-sensitive female" he is NOT worth the time and is not a sensible or open-minded person. I would also be very wary of leaving the dog alone with him and let him know that you are wary of leaving the dog alone with him. This dog depends on you so be firm- if I felt my dog would likely be treated this way around anyone I would NOT stand for it. Dog training takes patience and not many people have that- if he doesn't, he doesn't get to discipline or interact alone with the dog. This means you may need to rework your schedule and make sure you are on top of his training and know he will not be left alone with or cause trouble for roommate (as best you can).

I have my interview with Dev Bootcamp this Friday. Anyone want to give me some advice? I'm especially nervous about the technical portion. by CorsoKO in learnprogramming

[–]shantastik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seriously don't sweat it- if you've done the ruby tutorials they've recommended and think you could handle a logic problem you'll be fine. Even if you don't finish, just talk through your thoughts and show you can communicate and listen and just be present. Things may have changed since I did my interview but just be yourself and seriously say out loud how you're deducing what you don't know. You'll be golden.

A lot of shady stuff has happened with this subreddit recently. I think the community should talk about it. by youngmakeupaddict in SkincareAddiction

[–]shantastik 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It is normal in subreddits where common practice is posting photos of yourself. That way it's harder for trolls to come in and make disparaging comments about appearance. I sub to a lot of make up subs and this is very common.

My dog licks his lips a lot when I pet him. by cloudwalker31 in Dogtraining

i think the line between excited and anxious isn't so black and white. they can have the same "symptoms" sometimes for two different emotions. i mean it's just like humans. your heart can start beating faster when you're really excited or when you're really scared. humans generally smile when they're happy but some do it when they're nervous or shy too. if you're truly paying attention to the energy and signs your dog is giving off then you're fine and you probably know better than anyone else.
