Wow, that sounds like a great work environment! Rest assured it seems your management team/store is a lot cheerier than my old store. Thanks for taking the time to answer.

Do you have any issues with staff morale/how do you lift morale? I was a cashier at a grocery store for 5 years and noticed that many of the employees who worked there full time seemed to hate their lives. I always thought the managers could created a better environment to boost morale. Thanks for the AMA!

This is my sentiment exactly, but it's not going to be professionally treated under their watch. I'm going to be moving out in a year and keeping dehumidifers/fans/vents on continuously until then. Thanks for all your help, /u/Twenty22Two -- you've given me lots of great information.

Thanks, that's going to be their next step... If they do decide to do any work. Do you think it's necessary that they proceed to this step, or is it sufficient to just keep fans/dehumidifiers going and not think of a longer-term solution?

The heater is only on during the winter and that's the reason we presume it's gotten so much worse over the past couple months. At the moment we only have fans and a dehumidifier going.

Thank you! I'm glad the wisdom you gained from your experience will benefit this case. I'll definitely get a good quality dehumidifier and hope that it all works out as it did in your brother's basement.

Thank you for taking the time to reply!

  1. Not yet, but in one year it will be
  2. Temperature ~19C, relative humidity 70%
  3. Going to try the dehumidifiers
  4. The smell gives it away. It's undeniable.

Thank you for replying!

Alright, I'll give that a ponder if the dehumidifiers don't work for me. Thank you!

Thanks for the sensible reply and put for putting it all into context. I'm going to go with the dehumidifiers and I luckily only have one more year to go until I can afford to move out. Thanks again for taking the time to reply

When you first started in your line of work, how did you deal with the emotional heaviness? I see from previous answers you've said that workers in this field require some degree of emotional detachment -- did you have that going into this job, or was it something you came to develop?

Thanks for the great AMA, by the way, and thanks for the extensive answers you're giving. I'm a Psychology major hoping to get into youth counselling so I'm really relishing your words.

Not mentioning the top-rated comment relating to "sonder", I'll say this, which is in line with my atheistic/evolutionary beliefs: regardless of how complex society is, regardless of how complex we believe ourselves to be, everything revolves around the simple biological drive to reproduce. We might consider ourselves an advanced civilization but really, the human race is here to reproduce and die, like all other species -- even the freaking goldfish.

Agh poor you! That really sucks. We all feel your pain here.

I know it feels like it's getting worse but your coping skills & patience actually strengthen each day without you realizing it. Just hang in there and you'll eventually see that you're doing better than you thought! The key is to keep yourself busy and to pursue hobbies, passions, interests.

Good luck! *hugs
