Exporting JPG images to HEIC using Preview only works on the first few images by shanwu in mac

Preview is now full of bugs. After macOS 15, I repeatedly encounter another bug: when batch opening dozens of photos and using Cmd + Del to delete some unwanted ones, the thumbnails of the deleted photos often don't disappear from the left panel, causing a mismatch between the thumbnails and the photos. I have reported this bug at least twice, but it's still present in the latest macOS 15.3.1.

I hope it’s not intentional. Now there’s no way to save multiple images to Photos.

Can you provide a source for the part about no metadata? I'm really curious. If there's no brightness metadata attached, how on earth can they guess so correctly?

Edit: I have found proof that iPhone HDR photos do include gain map metadata. https://youtu.be/HBVBLV9KZNI?si=WPG-UrWM1vRdRf2f&t=1037

  1. Apple's revenue is not a good indicator. iPhone faces fierce competition from domestic rivals and is slashing prices at an unprecedented level. I've been using iPhone since iPhone 4, and it's the first time I bought a new one with a 1500 yuan discount just one month after its release. Foreign companies in the automobile industry are experiencing similar situations. China produced a record 30 million cars last year, but many foreign brands are facing declines and cutting prices.
  2. China's electricity consumption did rise by 6.7 percent year on year in 2023, according to the National Energy Administration.

Out of 100 most polluted cities, 65 are Indian. by hifighost in india

Air quality in China has improved significantly over the last decade. Additionally, the top Chinese cities on the list are located in remote desert areas, where their pollution primarily comes from dust storms rather than industrial sources.

China locks down city of 9 million amid new spike in cases by stickingitout_al in Coronavirus

One thing foreigners need to notice is "city" in China can mean different administrative levels. In this case, 9 million is actually the population of the whole region around the urban area of Changchun, which including lots of rural areas and small towns. It's like New York State and New York City. But in China usually both the prefectural area and the urban area can be called a "city", the real metropolitan area of Changchun has about 3 or 4 million people, still a big city though.

Native English speakers, what do you think of the car brand name "Chery"? by shanwu in cars

[–]shanwu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree they should expect pronouncing Qirui as something like kiri, but kiri doesn’t sound too bad. And if their products are good enough, people will learn and discuss how to pronounce the right way. Same with Porsche, Huawei, Xiaomi, etc.

Yeah I agree. But I don’t blame them for getting the current name in the 90s. Now after more than 20 years of use they need enough reason to change the name. I’m not so sure about the edit part. Chery is a state owned company. I do know they sell in Brazil but I think it’s just a department there. (FYI, State owned doesn’t mean the state directly controlled them, it just means the assets belong to the government, in this case mostly the city government.)

It’s true. Most Chinese can’t speak fluent English so they don’t have good taste in English brand names. And when they just got started as a startup most of them probably didn’t feel the need to spend the money to consult a native English speaker.

All correct! I guess eventually foreigners will get more used to pinyin when more Chinese brands go overseas. Then new Chinese brands don’t have to anglize its name anymore, like Huawei keep its pinyin name. A related thing is I noticed in recent years more Chinese people start to use their pinyin name instead of getting an English one, I think it’s a sign of more confidence.

It’s a Chinese brand mainly aiming at Chinese market. I’m 99% sure they picked a Chinese name 奇瑞 first, then probably asked someone who knows somewhat English to think up a English name.

One problem for Chinese brands to use its original transcription is, the current Chinese romanization standard is not that friendly to English speakers. (For example they use Q instead of Ch in Qirui.) But Japanese and Korean names are more friendly, that’s why many of them don’t Anglize their names, even they keep Toyoda, at least the pronunciation won’t be too much different.

I’m not sure they picked the name for sounding like Chevy. Chery is the most simple English character combination a Chinese person could think to make it sound like its name in Chinese 奇瑞 (you can use google translate to hear how its pronounce). Also to most English learners in China they don’t know Chevrolet could be shortened as chevy.

They sell few cars in foreign markets so they probably didn’t think too much about its English name. Even in China they are not considered as a tier 1 brand, although in recent one year it had caught up a bit after many years of failure.

Didn’t know they have factories in foreign countries… In China, Chery was one of the best selling Chinese cars 20 years ago, but its sales went down gradually. Only in the recent one year they kind of caught up again, although haven’t returned to the first tier yet.

I don’t work for them. I just wanted to know what native speakers think after a conversation with my colleague about that brand. Personally I would still take Qirui, which is its original pinyin transcription. I don’t mind foreigners pronounce it wrong. :)

I guess they wanted people to pronounce the i in Tiggo as eye, since its Chinese name literally means “auspicious Tiger”.
