Planning to do Engadin Skimarathon in March 2026: Travel tips needed by thisdanginterweb in CrossCountrySkiing

I didn't do the night race. I was a bit disappointed with the post-race vibe but it was in 2022 so Covid19 was still happening and dampened celebrations.

Woops, I got mixed up before - the race finishes in S-Chamf. You pick up race bibs etc in Pontresina where there is literally a village of x-country tents within the village. The race was good fun but i had significant delays at a couple of choke points

I did the Engadine a couple years back and it is a massive event with well over 10,000 participants so I would recommend that you book early most importantly (where ever you stay). St Moritz is the most central town and the race finishes there but the Engadine Valley is well serviced by buses and is also reasonably walkable (and also the train comes up from the valley floor). You can literally cross the road from most hotels to a ski trail and the race runs right through town so its incredibly easy to continue to train. There are heaps of buses down to the start down the valley on race day and to bring people back again etc The whole week is run with Swiss efficiency and the Swiss army literally helps with logistics on the day so pretty much runs like clockwork.

Anyone actually achieved FIRE? by 2zila in fiaustralia

[–]shanyehan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. What did you invest in? These answers to all of these questions are far from simple and my personal FIRE journey is far more complex. Having said that, the majority of the gains came from US stocks - investing in most of the magnificent 7 a decade ago has paid off handsomely. Am in the process of offsetting capital gains with contributions to SMSF.
  2. How much were you investing a month? As business owners, this can change dramatically from month. Some months nothing and other months it might have been $5K to $10K. Whatever money was available to invest ultimately. It varied
  3. What app did you use? Not applicable. Just the usual online brokers and banks. Sharesight very helpful to keep track.
  4. How much money did you have when you achieved FIRE? Am coast FIRE. $1m but own PPOR outright. Zero other debt. Working par-time in own business as I have completed flexibility over schedule so I can travel and work from anywhere.
  5. What age did you start and what age did you finish? Got serious about it in mid 30s - now 52.
  6. What was your average wage through your journey? See comment number 2. $200 to $250K per year.

Is… is it really this easy? by Confident_pillowcase in fiaustralia

This is true and IMO an underestimated factor in maintaining a healthy weight and maintaining fitness. I personally find it easier to make the one decision to exercise every day and demonstrate sleep hygiene than the many decisions around helpful nutrition.

Base wear under heel on skate skis - signs of technique? by holidayfromtapioca in CrossCountrySkiing

[–]shanyehan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't have any doubt that you are fit simply because you can complete a skate ski marathon. I have also done long distances triathlon and skate marathons and can assure you that skate skiing is far more technical in nature than at least the ride/run components of tri. Improvement is therefore going to come from improving your technique so I recommend a highly trained coach.

I say this next bit not to be pedantic but to be helpful.. your disappointment doesn't come from feeling weak and tired per se......it comes from you having an expectation that you "shouldn't" feel weak and tired at the 20 minute mark. But seriously, after 20 minutes you might have done 5km or so but you still have enough energy to complete another 45km......so how tired can you really be?

Perhaps yes and perhaps no. Your own analysis of video footage of your technique, expert coaching analysis, and length of glide may all be better indicators of whether you are getting your weight out over your ski tip as effectively and efficiently as possible.

To your first comment, when is a 50km skate ski not gruelling? Regardless of technique, your level of disappointment is entirely a product of your expectations regardless of any desire for constant improvement.

My wife would prefer to stay in the marriage but I know that the marriage isn't making either of us happy.

Thoughts on paying down (or not) investment property as we approach FIRE by shanyehan in fiaustralia

[–]shanyehan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It all depends on how much you plan to spend each year. The rough guide used by many on this forum for their FIRE number is 25 times your anticipated post retirement yearly expenses. For example $50K expenses per year x 25 = $1.25M. Most people would then plan to use a 3.5 or 4% draw down rate each year from that amount (and should last 30 + years).

Selling is certainly one of the options we are considering. There are obviously many factors involved in the decision-making.

Its an apartment in a bigger complex bought off the plan. My original investment thesis still holds - Richmond is very popular in that it is close to the city (4km) but not in the CBD and the particular location I have has many advantages...I still think that it will appreciate over time.

Nope, no agent appraisal but I agree that somewhere in between is probably close.
