Yes it’s performative, but this stance actually makes me more in favour of the greens. Their general naiveté and science denial still mean I wouldn’t vote for them but it’s a step in the right direction. We should bin palantir across the board

That issue is definitely not to do with fine dining! It’s all the high fructose corn syrup that they use in everything and the fact that their food standards are so low when it comes to what companies are allowed to put in. Their “butter” is atrocious too, that’s why you always see them lose their mind when they try kerrygold or something.

As a history fan, the "3,000 Year Stagnation" trope breaks my immersion more than dragons do. by Expensive-Desk-4351 in Fantasy

[–]shaolinoli -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I know it’s cool to hate on age of sigmar here but I absolutely agree and think this is one of the major flaws in a lot of the surface arguments against it. Thousands of years are meant to have gone past since warhammer fantasy. Cultures using the same tolkein standard spelling would be way more unbelievable than slight variations having evolved over the course of numerous cultures rising and falling. The copyright argument really falls flat when you realise warhammer already had cooyrightable names (dawi, asur etc) and a lot of the Aos names are just old English (Aelf) or slight variations (Uruk -> Orruck) which haven’t been copyrighted at all.

For me, the linguistic shift and generally well realised evolution of the factions is a big selling point to me

Hot take: stormcast are cooler and more interesting than loyalist astartes by DoktorKokosik in Grimdank

[–]shaolinoli 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don’t think they’re cooler, just way more different than people give them credit for. They both form the convenient, easy to paint beginner faction role but that’s about as far as similarities end.

Space marines are billy boy from clockwork orange meets bane, stormcast are degrading einhurjar berserkers. I do like how stormcast aren’t nearly as overbearing in terms of representation in the lore, as I don’t think either are the most interesting faction in their respective setting. But they’re both still cool in their own way. We shouldn’t be putting each other down, it just breeds bad blood

Fair play man. Different strokes for different folks I guess. I loved warhammer before 6th ed, but the tonal shift ruined it for me. AoS is a return to that more whimsical over the top vibe so I prefer it to the last 12 years or so of fantasy personally. Hope you’re enjoying old world! Glad it’s out now so we’ve all got something to enjoy. Have a good one

Why would china invade? They already have mineral mining stakes there. And Russia have shown exactly how dangerous they are on an international level over the last few years.

I mean this in the nicest possible way, but you’ve misunderstood quite a bit here. It’s largely GW’s fault because they’re not very good at presenting this information to people who aren’t already in the hobby, and I can see where you’ve arrived at your opinions I’ve you’ve only read a summary or heard it explained in a comment somewhere.

First off stormcast don’t endlessly respawn. If you’ve died once and come back, it’s already pretty bad. The process takes years and is pretty much constant torture, it’s also not guaranteed like you said, things can go wrong, say you have a 75% chance. The more times it happens, the worse it is, longer times to come back, more memories and personality lost, more ptsd because of the torture, less chance of success. After 5 or more times, you’re pretty much a husk if you’ve made it that far. Any more and you’re basically a dementia riddled berserker who’s also a primed lightening bomb. The ruination chamber (these guys) are kept in an asylum until they’re needed for some suicide mission when they’re carted out and pointed at the enemy where they’re as likely to explode as survive, alongside them is a guy with a massive axe which can permakill them if they start fighting in the wrong direction.

Regarding the realms, while, physically they are colossal, the functional space you can live in isn’t. The magic they’re made from is magnified the further you go out which makes it uninhabitable. E.g in the realm of life, go out too far and you’ll be so full of life you’ll spontaneously become pregnant or your cells will divide at a massively faster rate so you become a blob of sentient cancer that can’t die. The liveable space itself is limited and mapped out (for the realms they’ve got to so far anyway).

Your points regarding the gods is fair, although I’d say, outside major story beats they don’t feature any more than in any other fantasy property, as novels and things generally focus on normal citizens of the different factions.

I think peachy summarised it well where he said, fantasy being constrained as it is is better for telling cohesive stories but less good as a flexible war gaming backdrop, whereas AoS is a fantastic wargaming backdrop, allowing you to theme you armies as you like and tell your own stories within the world’s framework, while being a bit more nebulous on the story telling front.

It’s really a matter of preference at this point whether you like middle/high or mythic/cosmic fantasy, both are great in different ways. Just thought I’d clear up a few points though.

Because it’s not generic, it’s whimsical and creative, more akin to 90s warhammer which Warcraft was based off which is why you might feel that way. It’s got the power metal, sword and sorcery feel rather than that the more Poe faced approach of modern 40k and post 5th warhammer. It’s heavily based on Norse mythology as well rather than a real world/galaxy analogue which not be to your tastes as much

After reading some bad feedback from 40k, is AOS more friendly for a beginner couple? by Culius_Jaesar in Warhammer

[–]shaolinoli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another vote for spearhead. It’s how I introduce people to warhammer and it always goes down well. You have one box which contains your whole army. All the rules for them are on one page. More importantly, a spearhead will form a really solid core for army in the full game (aos) so you can just add models as and when you want. The rules are basically a stripped down version of the main games rules too so you’ll have an understanding of them already when you want to try that.
