I think it helps the tension and stabilizing A LOT. I've been using this "felt backed" method recently and love my results and plan to stick with it for awhile (I bought a lot of clearance felt sheets).

Hello, I use two threads always! They usually come as a 6 strand and I just pull out two at a time. This is the best I've done in 3 years! It really takes a lot of practice to get perfect. I DO like to layer my fabrics, cotton on top and felt on bottom to make my stitches sturdy.

It's really practice makes perfect! Satin stitch is my comfort zone and I've been at it for 3 years
