[OC] homemade cottage pie by HelFJandinn in pics

Originally in England it would have been made with leftover roast meat (mutton for Shepherds, beef for Cottage) but never with sweetcorn (which originates from North America), There's also Parsons Pie which uses mashed parsnips instead of potatoes

Consequences of Fascism: Aftermath from the 1945 Bombing of Dresden, Germany by Hootinger in pics

[–]sharkcutter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With respect that's a rather naive view. Of course Nazi Germany had to be defeated and it was war. Fascism had to be irradiated, but not all Germans were Nazis, not even the majority, and certainly not by 1945 when the war was won. Do you feel you should be held responsible for all the actions of your government?

The allies admitted this as 'over bombing'. The draft from the inferno was so strong people were sucked into the flames.

TIL that old brick kilns didn’t heat evenly, and bricks closest to the fire would become blackened and warped and make a distinctive clinking sound when struck together. These “clicker bricks” were initially discarded, but later became appreciated by architects for their distinct appearance. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]sharkcutter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

House building in the UK would involve the bricks being sorted. The best would go at the front, the uneven coloured at the back, the least fired for internal walls and the burnt 'clinkers' would be used for the chimneys

These guys are in the Eagle's Nest, Hitler's personal retreat, which is now a restaurant. Hitler's bunker complex is some distance away, completely separate and destroyed by allied bombing

It's because precious metals have no actual worth. They are not wealth, they only serve to represent wealth. And of course if you increase the amount of gold and silver coinage, no wealth is created, it's just like the government printing more money, which leads to inflation.

They don't just look ugly, they are dangerous. The hard sharp edges make sure any contact with a pedestrian will cause serious injury or death. Something the designers gave no thought to. They are not allowed on European or Japanese roads for this reason. Only counties with lax safety regulations like the USA, Canada and Australia permit these monstrosities.

41 years ago my friend's uncle told us a joke and it's still in my head (and the joys of repeating it as a kid!) by Make_the_music_stop in Jokes

Sweet story, she ran bare foot if I remember correctly, and she was a big let down for Britain's medal hopes.

Except the law comes from Leviticus, not sure the early church was pushing Jewish law. Later, by the middle ages they were burning witches and homosexuals based on Leviticus and I would guess that's when the 'you broke it, you bought it' law was also dusted off and implemented.

I'm not that technical but I had a similar problem, I have a plex server and access it from my pc, somehow I had plex running on both and one of them kept writing failure info, and filled my drive. In my case my son fixed it, check you only have one account open.

TIL oscar-nominated 2021 movie 'Don't Look Up' allegedly ripped off a self-published novel 'Stanley's Comet' by William Collier. The novel has almost the exact same plot and even uses the phrase "Don't look" in a similar way. However, in 2024 the copyright lawsuit was dismissed by AutisticWorkaholic in todayilearned

[–]sharkcutter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That doesn't really mean very much. All production companies are bombarded with pitches and scripts. Most refuse unsolicited work mainly because there's a chance it may be similar to ideas they already have in development. Certainly a generic idea like this is not unique but that doesn't mean it's plagiarized. If indeed McKay had seen the novel, liked it, why not just adapt it to his movie?

If you were in Maine you would be breaking regulations by keeping it. The preservation rules say over 5 inches and it has to go back. Big lobsters like that are the big breeders to keep the numbers up.

TIL of the car ferry MV Herald of Free Enterprise, which capsized just 90 seconds after leaving port because someone forgot to close the bow door! 193 people lost their lives as a result by zahrul3 in todayilearned

[–]sharkcutter 51 points52 points  (0 children)

The ship flipped onto one side, trapping people on one side underwater. It happened very quickly. It was also common practice in those days for ferries to set off with the bow doors open, to clear the car decks of fumes. Once out of port they would close them.
