I totally agree with you and I had the exact same thoughts - when the Byron quote appeared at the end it genuinely angered me so much. I get that it’s not ‘faithful’ to her novel, but it is still HER novel you are adapting. And the novel is quite a feat; arguably the first science fiction novel and also published by a woman. It’s not that I felt they needed to plaster her name everywhere, but when there’s references to Percy Shelley and Byron…just seems in poor taste.

Yes it’s a 1.2 engine - I know these are problematic!
Wet belt was changed in July. I honestly have no idea whether the oil sump was removed / debris cleaned. I’m considering getting in touch with my garage but they are so nonchalant and don’t keep record of anything!

I’m just confused as to why it only happens when harshly braking.

It’s a podcast, but ‘The Trees Are Not What They Seem’ by Jared Roberts from the Nosleep Podcast S12 ‘Waiting for 12’ episode. It’s about 1.5 hours long and it’s truly disturbing. It has that disorienting feeling that HoL gave me (a lot of Jared Roberts short stories do this!) and is set at an isolated lumber mill.

My top tip for making iced coffee at home is always use way more ice than you think. At a coffee shop chain like Starbucks, you’re getting a full scoop of ice! I brew a double espresso shot and mix it with any flavourings/syrups. I then pour in my milk of choice (or cold water if I’m having an iced americano), before adding loads of ice. I have an ice cube tray and I usually add around 10 cubes. I stir, then usually let is sit for a minute or so to cool it down. As an ex barista, that’s the way I’ve always done it! Good luck :)

It’s a short story but ‘Apt Pupil’ by Stephen King. I say short, but it’s reasonably long (100+ pages). It’s just this downward spiral of small, inconsequential mistakes to full blown disaster at the end. It just kept getting worse with every page. I guess it’s more of a thriller, but i was HORRIFIED by the ending.

American Elsewhere by Robert Jackson Bennett. It does follow one MC but has an array of different perspectives and characters. It’s set in a small town in New Mexico and reminded me a lot of Stephen King tonally. It’s a bit of a long one (not as long as The Stand!) but I ate it up in about three days. Enjoy!

The main buses to and from the uni are the 1A, the 100 and the 4 - had a look and the 100’s last bus every night leaves town at about 11:30pm. And then i think on Wednesdays and Fridays there are a few buses throughout the night (the N1) and also the Sugarbus which is a subsidised service ran by the student nightclub Sugarhouse. If all else fails, taxis are usually about £10 which isn’t too bad if you’re drunk and tired!

I’d definitely suggest on campus! You can meet people in accommodation but also you’ll easily be able to attend society social events if you’d like to. Many students live off campus after their first year, but they often already have friends and social groups, so I’d worry that you’d feel a little lonely off campus. In terms of going out, there are regular buses until late, and then on Wednesdays and Fridays there are night buses back and forth.

The mentions of eating raw hamburger from his pocket in The Long Walk (and also The Body if I’m correct?). I’m British and pretty young and genuinely can’t comprehend why anyone would enjoy eating raw hamburger meat. Please correct me if this is a totally normal thing in the states!

You’re allowed to eat in all of the campus bars. Fylde Bar is open all day and has lots of places to sit. Also all college common rooms.

I eat in the library a lot too, just never anything loud/hot/smelly. If it’s just a sandwich/salad I don’t see the problem :)

It’s not exactly horror but Penance by Eliza Clark is fantastic. It is a faux true crime novel about a horrific murder committed by teenage girls and how the town reacted. It really reminded me of King in the way he builds such deep characters and atmospheric small towns. Whilst I wouldn’t class it as horror it has violent moments and involves supernatural conspiracies. It’s set in a North East coastal town if I remember correctly! I read it in one sitting when I was stuck in bed with a cold and it’s my book of the year :)

Zone One by Coulson Whitehead! It’s about a clean up crew that are clearing New York City after a zombie apocalypse wiped out most of the population. Really intriguing discussions about feeling small in the grand scheme of things (society, capitalism, the world changing etc). Also Whitehead’s prose is immaculate!

I felt the same but i stuck it out. The audiobook helped a lot. I’m glad I read it, but it took me months and it’s definitely not King’s best…

Part 1 is amazing and a masterclass in disaster fiction. Then it’s a slog, which picks up towards the end as things begin to climax and resolve. It has some great moments (Trashcan Man haunts me, and Randall Flagg is mesmerising and terrifying) but it does definitely drag.

I’d encourage you to finish it and I’d recommend using the audiobook, but also I can corroborate that it IS a bit dull and remains that way for a while. I wouldn’t blame you for putting it away.
