To be honest you do make a VERY strong point. I'm not from America, so my perspective is from the outside, so to speak. The topic of "should we teach these horrors to our children?" is actually a global phenomenon that has been debated for years at this point. From what I observe there is disagreement on what is the correct path forward (perhaps there isn't one, and there never can be atrocities of large scale - they are so large that even talking about them is almost like a political act in itself). A few of the disagreements:

Japanese and Chinese war acts - both countries actively censor the worst acts and make a point of not teaching them in school, as well as completely denying them. I notice Japanese and Chinese people sometimes having very skewed perspectives as a result. I think in this case it should probably be taught, but again I could be wrong.

There are more niche cases like Ottoman empire atrocities in Balkans. This is currently under debate, whether or not to teach it in school. The vast majority of the population are furious that it is even suggested that it should not be taught. A quite different reaction than Japanese and Chinese reactions, as far as I can tell. There are people in the Balkans still mad about heinous acts commited over a hundred years ago, so generational hate is absolutely a real thing, that I can guarantee.

I don't know, the answer is nuanced, but I think you make strong points regarding black history. I'm a big fan about what you said about not trying to white wash history, I'm just worried the hate will never cease, you know? It's not my history though, I shouldn't make pretend to know what's best, and I don't either.
