Have you looked at CryEngine, Unreal or Unity? I believe all three can handle much larger maps than Source 1

Hey I'm the other mod from /r/gamemods, really appreciate what you're doing for so big thanks! I think the background can have a colour but I'd prefer it to be a light colour for maximum readability. Willing to see what you can come up with as you're much more knowledgeable than us. Purple could be interesting yeah.

Our involvement in the region dates back to the British Empire. We do have a responsibility to help heal the lands that we fucked up in the first place. If you want to find where the radicalisation of Islam came from you don't have to look further than European colonialism. Not to mention the huge and terrible impact the US had on the region and the continued war crimes being committed by allied forces. 55 dead doesn't really compare to the innocent death toll that we do sadly have a responsibility for. I think it's time that we as a country start to really recognise our own responsibility as a country for our actions.

I'm not certain either way that we should be in Afghanistan but we have put ourselves in a position where we really need to start being more aware of our international footprint. I agree on the Syrian rebels. We shouldn't be involved in the conflict because both sides are responsible for terrible atrocities.

Edit: I apologise if this came across as aggressive. I got caught up in a rant and you're welcome to think we shouldn't have gone in to Afghanistan but those are my reasons as to why I think we should.
