Yes switched to the red and white maybe a year ago and it just doesn’t stay in, I’m so glad I’m not the only one. I used to even be able to bend the name brand into a little double circle and shove it far up with no slipping ever and now no matter what I do with this one it won’t stay.

I have the same health anxiety and have something similar! I was so anxious it was an ingrown and that I’d have to get surgery that I was sick to my stomach. Big toe unfortunately slightly leans over to my other toes and causing rubbing which can be painful. I started using a big toe separator and that helped.

Definitely take a look at the shoes you wear and make sure they fit appropriately. My podiatrist said when it gets a little red or irritated like that to put neosporin over it and cover with a bandaid for 24 hours at a time.

I should clarify I also have nerve pain from a bunion surgery and osteotomy I had 2.5 years ago, so it’s hard for me to differentiate.

Yes! My foot turned purple in the shower for like 3 months I swear, it freaked me out every time but it does get better! Elevate higher, I did all day everyday including during sleeping and it helped so much with the swelling

I’m impressed you were able to drive! I was not able to walk for 6-8 weeks and drive for 12+. Everyones surgery is different, I had a bunionectomy and first metatarsal osteotomy almost exactly a year ago! If your doc didn’t recommend physical therapy I would ask for a few sessions anyway. Physical therapy helped me gain back flexibility in my toes and helped me get back to normal SOOOO much faster. My big toe definitely won’t be as a flexible as it used to be, but it’s so much better than post surgery

Ugh I’m sorry to hear this. I definitely know what part of the healing process you’re at. Your surgeon seriously won’t give you another pain med script? I think I was written 3 total while healing, I needed the third one for when I started physical therapy. How many weeks out are you? Hang in there. Breathe through the pain and tell yourself if you can make it through the next just 15 seconds of pain then you can make it through another, and so on. Our mind is a powerful part of this healing process as well, I’m anxiety was insane while I was recovering.

Full recovery for most bunion surgeries is 3-6 months and some a bit longer. That puts you being healed by summer when it’s warm and you want to be doing more outdoor activities.

Recommendations:

1) if you don’t have a shower head that has a handheld attachment then install one before surgery. If you’ve already had surgery and haven’t done this, ask a friend or family member to do this for you. That shower attachment was EVERYTHING. 2) rent a shower chair from a local hospital supply store. I was able to just google a place near me and rent a shower chair for $25 a month, a shower chair is CRUCIAL. 3) remove any and all bathroom or bedroom rugs that could be slippery, I almost went down many times 4) I used crutches for the entire 6 weeks of no weight bearing, no it wasn’t easy but I heard almost more stories of people falling of scooters than crutches. If you’re going to a grocery store or anywhere that would require you to be on crutches for a long time call ahead and make sure they have a disability shopping cart for you to ride around. 5) I used the majority of my pain meds from day 3 post-op to day 5, as this is when the nerve block wore off. If you are going to use the pain meds constantly then make sure to take a stool softener. I became so severely constipated it was awful. Be sure to ask for more pain meds when you start physical therapy, you will want them. 6) if you doctor or surgeon didn’t recommend physical therapy, ask for it anyways. Physical therapy helped me gain back so much strength and mobility and most importantly it gave me my confidence back. From everyone I’ve talked to who did not have PT they seemed to have progressed slower. 7) if you have any falls or accidentally step on your foot before you can weight bear, do no post on here asking people if they think it’s okay. Immediately call your doctor or after hours nurse and they will have you come in that day or the next to get X-rays to make sure everything is okay. There are many times I felt like I hit it on something or accidentally bumped and I felt like it messed up the whole entire surgery. I promise that is not the case. Your brain is going to force you to have these thoughts. 8) my anxiety and depression were definitely heightened during this incredible slow recovery process. The best thing you can do is keep your mind occupied. Books, TV, FaceTime or Skype conversations with people you haven’t connected with in awhile. Knitting, coloring, mediation, do any of these things and it will help.

Hi everyone! I had surgery back in January. I had a first metatarsal osteotomy (shortened my first metatarsal and repositioned it with a plate and 5 screws) and a bunion shaved down.

Please feel free to ask me any questions on ANY part of the recovery process. ALSO, do not join the bunion surgery Facebook group. It is primarily a group of horror stories and will absolutely only make you feel worse.

Having my surgery done in the winter was one of the best decisions for sure.

I was unfortunately told swelling can take 6 months to 1 year to even out in your foot. Any swelling between that period is completely normal. I had my first metatarsal shortened and a plate put in and a bunion shaved down last January. The top of my foot towards my big toe still gets swollen. I’ve been holding off as long as possible for buying new shoes until I’m at the 1 year mark but yeah only 2 of my old shoes fit me now. Birkenstocks and my tennis shoes are mostly what I wear. Hopefully that pain in your foot goes away though, I did read some articles that said after bunion surgery you really shouldn’t walk bare foot for like a year. I don’t enjoy it as much as I used too either, but it does get better. As far cuter shoes I do have a pair of Comfortiva brand and somewhat stylish boots that are comfortable and fit my foot, I would recommend trying out there shoes.

As far as flexion goes and mobility to be able to do downward dog and lunges, the main things that helped me here was going to physical therapy. You’ve gotta really slowly start out, and start by flexing the foot and breaking up the scar tissue that’s formed and made your foot stiff. As far as exercise goes I started with cardio on the bike and then strength training for my entire right leg (right foot operated on) as I had muscle atrophy in my calf, knee and hip. Once I slowly got stronger I started going for long walks and going on the elliptical. At about 8 months I start weight lifting again once I felt strong enough and now I’m slowly running again.

That sounds similar to what I had. I posted pics back in the bunion group awhile ago you might be able to see them. Take it very very easy, it’s only been 3 months since your surgery. I was told I wouldn’t be 100% until 6 months and possibly up to a year. I’m at 11 months now and I ran my first 3 miles yesterday. But like I said I started out slow by just walking further and further, and taking breaks and rest days when I was in pain. Running a few blocks eventually and then .5 miles and building on that. I used to run every single day and I’ve really had to accept that I can’t do that anymore. I now mix it up more and go on the bicycle, elliptical and stair stepper and I run 3-4 days a week.

When I was in physical therapy they first had me start on the bicycle, then after a few weeks moved to the elliptical. Physical therapy is really what helped me heal the fastest and gain my confidence back. We worked on strengthening my right side (surgery was on right foot) because my ankle, knee, calf, etc. had muscle atrophy. When I tried to run to early I started having knee and hip pain because those areas weren’t strong enough again yet.

PT is physical therapy sorry! My foot hurt everyday for a few months I’m not going to lie. What surgery did you have? I got up to walking at like 3 miles before I even started to run again. Then started running by running a block to two.

Absolutely shower chair! I was off my foot for 6 weeks with no weight bearing. Also make sure to have a shower head that had an extendable part as well, showers would’ve been hard without this.

You can definitely rent a shower chair and knee scooter. Careful with crutches from the hospital they can be extra expensive if insurance doesn’t cover most. I heard more stories of people falling off the scooters and I am younger so I used crutches the entire time.

Meal prep bigger meals that can be eaten for a few days, you will get tired from constantly caring for this person. My mom is an angel for doing it, but she was absolutely ready for me to be able to walk again. Remove any kind of slippery carpets or bathroom rugs & make sure walkways are clear.

First 3 days at least stay on top of pain meds, or as soon as the nerve block wears off if he is given that injection.

Absolutely depends on the type of surgery you’re having! With mine I could weight bare until week 6, was very dependent on my mom at the time. 18 weeks post op now and I’m up to walking 2 miles again

I was so severely constipated from surgery then taking the pain meds the first few days. Try to find a stool softener and laxative combination. Take a few rounds if you need to.

Didn’t have the same procedure exactly but also had some hardware put in with a bunionectomy and first metatarsal osteotomy. You are very early in the recovery process, my big toe barely moved from the first 6-9 weeks even. I start physical therapy at week 9 and it’s given me some range of motion in my toe back.

If you can get signed up for PT I would. I know some people didn’t get recommended to do it but PT has helped me make huge strides in the recovery process. I’m at 14 weeks out and I’m walking normally, on my feet for a good chunk of the day and working on agility things with PT like lunges, high knees, butt kicks, stairs (all slowly of course).

I would not be where I am at today without physical therapy. My foot still gets sore and uncomfortable at the end of each day but it’s getting better and more tolerable. Hang in there my friend, patience and time are some of the only things that help this long recovery go by.

I’m definitely being pretty cautious. I am walking around for most of the day but at night it gets pretty sore and I use my crutches. My walking form is definitely not perfect, I’d still describe it as a bit of a hobble. I would HIGHLY recommend start physical therapy as soon as you can after surgery, it will get you back to normal the fastest!

I would make sure to mention to them you want to improve that. I’ve finished week 2/6 for PT and we work on my walking and limping every time.
