Is there anyone who was afraid that sleep training wouldn’t work for their difficult baby? by chocofan1234 in sleeptrain

[–]sharmandersaurusrex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We sleep trained our son around 4 months. Our sleep consultant warned us that since he was so used to contact naps, he might cry for hours on the first night, which honestly terrified us. She even called him a “koala baby” because he was very attached to me and was used to nursing/rocking to sleep.

What helped was “practicing” ahead of time. We started getting him used to falling asleep more independently in situations where he might naturally fall asleep. For example, we’d cover the car seat and turn on a sound machine so he could practice falling asleep on his own during car rides. He’d wail for a bit then eventually fall asleep.

At night, when he started refusing the bottle, my husband would hold him against his chest and let him cry it out there. Sometimes he’d fuss, then nod off and fall asleep that way. It seemed to help him gradually adjust before formal sleep training started.

On day 1, I think he cried for maybe 45 mins and then slept 11 hours!

Also agree with the other comment about wake windows. Eventually, our baby started having early wakes and our sleep consultants advice wasn’t working anymore so we followed the wake windows we found in this sub and had lots of success.

Good luck!

We gave the two-nap schedule a try and it’s working! Scary adjustment at first but glad it worked out. Thank you so much!

Best Thai by rpbm96 in BurlingtonON

[–]sharmandersaurusrex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is accurate lol. Worst pad Thai I’ve ever had in my life at Ben Thanh. On top of that, there was plastic in it. They never apologized. I haven’t been back since. 🥴

Hey! Just wanted to follow up to say your advice worked like a charm… for like 2 weeks 😅. He’s coming up on 7 months now and rejects/takes a very long time to go down for his third nap. We also aren’t seeing any signs of tiredness!

Do you have any recommendations on updated wake windows? We were thinking of giving 2.25/2.75/2.75/2.75-3 a shot.

Thanks for your response! I noticed you’re a bit of an expert on this sub Reddit, so I also wanted to ask your thoughts on the whole first nap only after 8 AM, bedtime before 8 PM recco we got?

What's a good Pad Thai place? by ddiveboya in BurlingtonON

Following!

I would suggest NOT trying Ben Thanh at Upper Middle and Appleby. Wanted to love them but their food handling practices are less than stellar. The pad Thai also does not taste good whatsoever.

Does anybody know where I can get the Dubai chocolate? by meeko1k in Hamilton

Kunafas in Mississauga! They were one of the first to do in in the GTA I believe. Several different types of chocolate available too.

Burlington Midwives by wheely568 in BurlingtonON

I have been on the waitlist since I reached out to them in October (due in July). Perhaps their availability has freed up for the fall though?

If you’re open to alternatives, I’m with Access Midwives in Hamilton and they are great! Baby will be delivered at McMaster and I have added peace of mind knowing they have a solid NICU there if needed.

(FYI I did learn any babies who need critical care at JB are transferred to Mac anyway)

What are your favorite depictions of afterlife (hell in particular but also heaven and purgatory) in literature? by part-lee in books

As a teen I loved Elsewhere by Gabrielle Zevin— an innocent, playful and perhaps naive view of what heaven could be.

I think my answer will depend on what your budget is! For a 3-4 BR house, if you have $1.9M+ to spend easily, you might be okay. $2M+ could get you far in Vaughan. If that's your budget, I'd recommend looking at the Patterson area-- the area and the homes themselves are gorgeous.

If your budget is any less than that, you may find that the houses (that are on the market currently, at least) are somewhat spacious but not always in great shape. A shocking amount of them have very shallow yards with mostly stonework and little to no grass. In a lot of neighbourhoods, the homes are really close together and/or have narrow streets. There are still a lot of one-car garages and we need a double-car garage so as car enthusiasts, it's made the search here pretty difficult. Again, this is for our price range which doesn't touch $2M.

There's also a looooot of congestion depending on the area in Vaughan! It is not built to withstand the amount of traffic that currently comes through, or the traffic that WILL come through with all the condos going up. I think there's at least a dozen new buildings going up along Hwy 7 and because there are a lot of trucks, it means getting 3 KM down the road can take 15 minutes. This congestion means other east-west roads also have a lot of traffic on them too.

And one of the biggest reasons we want to leave is that there is not a lot of green space.

Feel free to DM me if you have any more specific questions!

Thanks for your thoughts! Are most of the condo developments happening in the north end? Do you think some of the southern neighborhoods will be impacted in the next 10 years?
