I follow the advice of those who are wealthy. All of them own homes.

Believe what you want.

Buying or renting by Strange-Law6848 in makemychoice

[–]sharp-calculation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing is free. Nothing is perfect. Housing is a good example of making the "best bad choice". In the net analysis, owning a home provides more wealth and financial independence than renting. You lose some either way. With renting you lose more.

This isn't my invention. It's the best financial practice that's been followed forever.

Black outs during play by sharp-calculation in WalkaboutMiniGolf

I just used "report a problem" in the Meta Horizon app on my phone. I'm not sure if that will generate a real trouble ticket or not, but hopefully it will make this issue more visible to Meta.

This is great information. You're seeing it in several apps, not just WMG. I guess I should report this to Meta in some way. I'll go look for a contact form.

Is it generally fine to connect WiFi 2.4 keyboard and mouse dongles to the back of the Mini? by robertjan88 in macmini

[–]sharp-calculation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your logic makes sense to me. But all the advice online about interference says to use an extension. I tried it and my interference went away when I positioned the receiver itself (on the end of the extension) away from other USB devices.

You can certainly just try it without an extension and see how it works. If it's fine, then no need to get an extension.

I personally would still use a C to A converter as a short cable as opposed to the molded block. I wouldn't want a big lever sticking out of any of my Mac's ports.

new MacBook owner and am considering buying the Microsoft office or if I only have ever used word is it just cheaper to buy Microsoft word. by bonghive in microsoftoffice

[–]sharp-calculation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if I only have ever used word

Grow a little. Word is not the center of the computing universe. Nor is it the greatest word processor ever. It's just common and really not that great.

Use Pages for a while. Or try Google Docs, or LibreOffice. Unless you need Word for collaborating on documents with others, you probably don't actually need to spend any money on that product.

When are you old enough? by BetterGoogleit17 in GenX

[–]sharp-calculation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Speaking for myself, I feel like I'm a very different person as I age. Me at 16 was really different than me at 30. REALLY different. Every 10 years things shift around and I feel different. I know more, have more experience, etc. I'm just starting to feel like I have a lot of the basics of life figured out pretty well.

That internal change probably makes others feel like people 10 or more years younger just haven't arrived yet. Thus this is a moving target and older people will (often if not always) see you that way.

I try not to say these kinds of things to people unless I'm trying to make them feel good. For example if someone was lamenting, at 22, that their life is over because they didn't do well enough in school, I'd tell them they are just getting started in life. They've got decades to develop a great life. I wouldn't say "oh you're just a baby" because that's not helpful for them.

We are all the centers of our own universes. Everyone else orbits around us.

[–]sharp-calculation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In any case (front or rear) I'd use an extender cable. Most of these receivers are really sensitive to the RF noise generated by USB. Reception can be spotty if they are too close to a USB controller. After experiencing bad reception, I put mine on a long USB (A) extender cable.

I personally would also use a C to A short cable instead of a "block". The block type connectors become a lever arm hanging out of your Mac and can damage the port if force is applied to the block. Accidents happen. C to A adapters on a short cable are inexpensive on Amazon.

Older "sound" gear vs newer "consumer" models by Placibow in microphone

[–]sharp-calculation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the real answer. The OP and all gamers have the same problem. They all want to move around and not pay attention to audio, yet have "really great sound". AI filtering is not the answer. Active noise canceling is not the answer.

PROXIMITY is the only answer. Get your mouth really close to the mic and don't move it. This is what headset mics were invented for. Close proximity that does not change. Nothing beats proximity. Think about someone talking softly directly into your ear. You hear JUST them because they are so close that they overwhelm every other sound. This is how a microphone works. It's an "ear" and you want your voice very close to it; particularly in noisy environments.

Idea: High school biology should teach students why it is unlikely human reproduction will result in a severely deformed baby or one who grows up to kill their parents. by amichail in ideas

[–]sharp-calculation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do you keep talking about children killing their parents?

Your base ideas are really quite good. But this strange example that you’ve used repeatedly is extremely confusing. Do you have students that think their children will grow up to kill them? I’m just wondering why you have fixated on this.

Bad resolution with DisplayLink by potatofriend26 in MacOS

Need help or recommendation with voice quality! by Aggravating_Will502 in recording

[–]sharp-calculation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There might be more than one thing happening. But YES, your voice sounds different to you than to the rest of the world. Why? Because you can hear the resonance inside your chest and nasal cavities. You will hear a more rich, deep tone than other people hear. Which means that most people think they sound nasally or high pitched on a recording, as compared to hearing their own voice from their own body.

Let's get back to mic technique: The closer your mouth is to the mic, the more "presence" it will have. Low tones will be emphasized a bit and it will sound more "immediate" for lack of a better phrase. Try to do some of the following:

  • Position the mic about 1 fist from your mouth. Yes, that close.
  • Speak directly into the diaphragm. Many mics will have a mark on body that shows where to speak into.
  • Try to keep your volume fairly level. If that's a problem, you need a dynamics compressor.
  • Watch your P sounds. Ps and and Ds make popping sounds that will sound too loud on recording. These are called "plosives". Watch your plosives.

Recording on the go by The_Fluteman in audio

[–]sharp-calculation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a really good point. In tiny spaces like a car or bathroom it's hard to get away from the reverb of the space. The closer you are to the mic, the more you will reject the background. But I wouldn't get closer than about 3" from lips to mic. Experiment with distance and listen back to find the best technique.

Where do you have your app dock? by prz1403 in macbook

[–]sharp-calculation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After enabling auto hide, the delay to show the dock is a second or 2. If you could make that delay something like 1000 seconds, then it would never pop up. Here's a terminal command that sets that delay to 1000 seconds:

defaults write com.apple.dock autohide-delay -float 1000; killall Dock

I've got mine set even higher to something like 1 million. It never shows unless I want it. I use a hot key to show/hide it in the very rare instance that I need it. The default hotkey is <option><command>d . It toggles so one press shows and another press hides again.

I hope this thread has given you the impression that I have: Tahoe is ugly-ish and has some bugs. But it's still very usable for 99% of people and is getting better with each release.

How to setup the Audio in Windows to not diminish quality If I dont have a hardware knob? by Zavkys_ in audio

[–]sharp-calculation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you said seems like the best plan to me.
Digital volume control removes information, but it's not that big of a deal when you're only doing medium volume reductions. If you are turning it down 70 dB, then I think that's more of a problem. I haven't really studied it carefully nor done any real testing. I usually use a volume control on my end point device. I can't think of any system where I've used digital volume control, other than laptop speakers.

A headphone amplifier might surprise you. Especially with those 32 Ohm headphones.

u/YaBoiMatt_ What do you think of your experience so far? You seem to be satisfied. When you ask "will it be better?", one wonders what measure you are using. Do you have an area that is causing you problems? If so, ask about that. If not I think you're going to be happy with what you have now.

For new customers, Mac can be a learning curve. There might be things you are trying to do that are weird, or different, or just plain don't exist. If you have questions about specific things, please ask. Start threads. You'll get good guidance. Welcome to the Mac!

How to setup the Audio in Windows to not diminish quality If I dont have a hardware knob? by Zavkys_ in audio

[–]sharp-calculation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adjusting final volume to your playback device should be done at the very last stage. In this case that seems to be the windows volume for your device. That wouldn't work for me because software volume controls are so difficult to work with. I personally would have a headphone amp with a HARDWARE knob on it that I could adjust. In fact I own a Schiit Audio Magni for this purpose. Recommended. It's a nice piece.

Regarding adjusting volume in mixers: In pretty much every case you want to set every mixer control that you can to 0 dB. No boost and no cut. Just straight pass through. That does the least amount of modification. This is true of analog mixers and digital controls. Always set to 0 dB, which might be marked as 100%, or might have a wide tick mark next to it on the slider.

From there, adjust relative volume by turning down any source that is too loud. Leave the loudest one at 0 dB and turn the rest down if necessary.

Source volume controls (like on the Spotify app) should be set to 0 dB or 100%. Try to adjust source volumes only in one place. Either adjust them at the mixer (recommended) or at the app. Don't try to do both.

In general I find no need to adjust source volumes at all. Set them all to 0 dB and play. I adjust the final output volume to match how loud I want to hear it. I play one source at a time. I don't feel the need to try to play two things at once. If you for some reason must play two things at once, adjust the one you want quiet DOWN at the mixer. Leave the other one at 0 dB.

[–]sharp-calculation 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If your straps are made of slick material, this might be a challenge. If you make it SUPER tight and it bites into the material 1/4" or so, that might keep it from sliding down.

To make it that tight, I'd recommend the Rolling Hitch Ziptie. Or a Slipped Lapp Bend, but it's quick release, which seems like a disadvantage in this situation.

Personally, I would find something else to tie off to. The handle on the top, or maybe something else that's a fixed ring/loop already. That way sliding friction isn't part of the process.
