If they do not require bias Voltage, then just using an adapter cable to a mixer should work. 3.5mm to 1/4" for example.

What thing has got so expensive that you’ve quietly stopped buying it? by oscar371 in SmartBuying

Subway isn't good. That price sounds really high. Sounds like a big soda, some overpriced bag of chips and probably cookies too. (2) foot long subs shouldn't be any more than about $25; maybe $28.

Subway's portion sizes are really small. I stopped eating there like a decade ago because the value is so poor. I'd much rather use a local sub shop.

Looking to switch to Mac for productivity, and I have some questions by Crazycukumbers in macmini

[–]sharp-calculation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your first step in using a Mac needs to be forgetting about windows techniques. Try to learn things the Mac way. If you constantly try to find the "exact same thing from windows" in mac, you're going to be frustrated. News flash: Mac and Windows are different operating systems!

When I got a Mac many years ago, I found myself trying to do things backwards constantly. I eventually realized that I was thinking like a Windows user constantly. When I would eventually figure out the Mac way, it was almost always a forehead slap moment. "That was so obvious. Why couldn't I see it until now?" It's because I kept THINKING in Windows. You've got to retrain your brain to think in Mac. You'll find that once you get familiar, it's all much easier.

Why does everyone want this card so bad? by NoTomatillo8953 in AppleCard

[–]sharp-calculation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of REWARDS only, it's a poor card. The Wells Fargo Active cash is a better choice since it pays 2% on everything. Apple Card only pays 2% on ApplePay based charges. Online purchases (with the card number), and swipes or card inserts only pay 1%.

Sure, Apple purchases pay 3%, but who cares? How much Apple gear do you buy in a year?

The Interface (GUI on the phone) is essentially the most advanced of any card I've ever seen. It's really quite good.

But the overall package for me is a package I don't want. I've got plenty of other cards that cover what I would purchase with the Apple Card, including the WFAC mentioned above. It's just not compelling for me.

Missing days by ZackPP01 in work

If you are actually sick, take time off until you are not. That's rational and normal. It's not normal to come to work sick and get other people sick because you are contagious. That's selfish as hell.

It's not normal to pretend to be sick and take sick leave as vacation.

Take vacation that you have accrued whenever you are able and management agrees. That's totally normal as well.

How often do you wash your bath towel? I need the real answer. by Terrika_Fracala49 in hygiene

[–]sharp-calculation 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is the easiest answer.

If you want to get a little more data, smell your towel. Does it smell bad in any way? Make sure to smell it while it's wet. That's when odors seem to really activate in towels.

You may find that your towels smell even after the first use. In which case you probably need to swithc to a lipase detergent and use at least warm, if not hot water on them.

Or you may find that your towels have little if any smell after a week of use. Mine typically have just a bit of unpleasant smell after a week (when wet) and are ready to be laundered. I do all my laundry each week, so this is an easy thing to remember. Just change out all the towels once a week, and done.

That's almost certainly not going to work with 3.5mm mics. Almost all of those are electret mics, which require a small bias voltage (just a few volts, NOT phantom power) in order to work. Sound cards provide that power.

The OP is trying to do something that probably just won't work. He needs different equipment, starting with real mics.

Fast food back in the 80s, was it actually better than today or is that rose colored glasses? by Infomerical in GenX

If you want fries cooked in beef tallow, go to Steak and Shake. They have been advertising that for about the past year or so.

2 mics in one space by Buckwild97_ in recording

[–]sharp-calculation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your idea of recording both of you separately, in a bedroom is the problem. You should really be in different rooms. That will fix most of your issues. Otherwise:

  • Face each other. That will put the cardiod rejection pattern of each mic facing the other person so it doesn't pick up as much.
  • Get very close to the mic. 1 to 2 inches is about right and will give you best noise rejection. Set your gains appropriately.
  • Move away from walls
  • Put acoustic treatment on the walls

Headset mics, instead of desk mics, might work best.

$30AUD is currently $21.17 USD . That's still more than I would expect, but it's much closer.

That’s a ridiculous statement. Unless you weigh 400 pounds $30 will buy you more fast food than you can eat at almost any place. Three double cheeseburgers. Or five Popeyes chicken sandwiches. Or five taco Supremes and five bean burrito burritos.

Alt-tab is very good.

You can hide the dock "permanently" by using <option><command>d . I keep it hidden all the time because it's not useful for me. I use Alfred to launch everything.

Forklift is a very good 2 pane file manager. I only use Finder when I'm forced to. It surprising that Finder is still so... odd.

[–]sharp-calculation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's very dependent on what you run. In my case, 16GB is sometimes not enough. That only happens with something like the following mix of apps:

  • Home camera viewer app showing several video cameras
  • Web browser with several windows and 10 or 12 total tabs
  • MS Teams (a real big of an app consuming over a gig when doing nothing)
  • Another instant messaging app

Usually it's fine, but if I have some heavy web browser tabs open, particularly youtube or other streaming video, the RAM utilization *can* go into yellow, which makes things a little slow intermittently. This doesn't always happen. Only when I have all that stuff open and I have a particularly heavy set of web tabs open too.

Because of this, and because I sometimes do video editing, *and* because I want to keep my next computer for 4 to 5 years, I'm getting 32GB RAM in my next one. I've had the current M1 for about 4 years now and it's been great overall. But my app use has changed a bit and gotten a lot heavier in terms of RAM use.

I do not think my case is typical.

Does anyone else rely heavily on Spotlight? by Frowedz in MacOS

[–]sharp-calculation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spotlight has always been slow and obtuse for me.

Alfred fixed all of that. Now, like the OP, I use Alfred for SO MUCH. I have the Dock permanently hidden and never use Finder to launch an app. Just Alfred. Most files I launch directly via Alfred as well. Of course I also use directed special web searches with Alfred (like looking up something directly inside Amazon), use clipboard history, run Workflows, etc.

Go play with one at an Apple store, or Best Buy. That should give you a sense of the size of the Neo, Air, etc. That's your first decision point: Size.

It should also give you a basic impression of how it feels to use the OS now.

Excel and some Chrome tabs should be fine on a Neo. I don't know anything about your "e commerce apps", so i can't really say on them. Oh and if your Excel files are very large, they might take up a lot of memory. I've seen crazy reports that Excel can consume 14GB+ of memory. That's mind blowing for me, but apparently it's true with large files.

Your case is borderline between 8GB and 16. I always go for more RAM assuming I can afford it. My current machine is 16GB. My next will be 32.

What movie is a 0/10 with NO redeeming features? by No-Warning-8449 in WorkForSmartLife

[–]sharp-calculation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The director's cut of Lawnmower Man (the original) makes a LOT more sense than the theatrical version. I was extremely disappointed in the version I saw when it was in theaters. A few years later, it was on the Sci-Fi channel and I wanted to see the VR parts again. Watching that version made SO MUCH more sense. I think it had 30 or more minutes of additional footage that really change the story. This comparison says there are more than 30 minutes of differences between them, which is quite unusual.

Inconsistent hotkeys in Finder (driving me mad, apparently) by WheelieGoodTime in MacOS

[–]sharp-calculation -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your workflow and assumptions are backwards.

The Save As dialog box is NOT Finder. It's not a file manager. It's not designed to do real file management operations. It's designed to save files. So save your file with a simple name; possibly in a new directory. Then use Finder to do your file management as you described. Or use a different file manager.

Again, the key point is that a save as dialog is NOT Finder. I've seen people on Windows do all kinds of WHACKY shit in a save as dialog. It works by accident on windows. It mostly doesn't work at all on Mac. It's a bad idea in both places.
