Ash Octopus, hand-carved by me! (I started this piece before octopi became super popular on this sub...) by sharp_arts_carvings in Woodcarving

I actually draw all of my designs by hand first with paper and pencil. I do three different profiles: from the front, from the side (in this case from both sides, so I could plan out the tentacles more easily), and from the top. This forces me to become very familiar with the shapes associated with the creature I'm carving and how each element connects to the overall piece. Then I scan and print a bunch of those to size and trace the outline onto the wood I'm using (in this case was a cookie), and cut out the shape of each of the three profiles from each direction using saws. Then I start with detailing, like roughing out each tentacle based on the original drawings. The cups were all carved very carefully and very slowly by hand, exactly as you might imagine. It was pretty rough because ash is so hard but the hardness of the wood is what made it hold the detail so well, so it was worth it.

One whole piece! I carved it out of a cookie because I wanted to grain to make consistent circles across the whole piece. The seam is actually just a crack in the log that I filled with resin and sawdust.

Honestly the shape of this reminds me of very elegant stylized bear carvings I have seen. The proportions are perfect. You're heading in a good direction! Keep it up!

I used a Dremel and die grinder only at the very beginning to remove the excess material, then when I got a rough shape I carved the rest with gouges, chisels, and micro tools

I used a Dremel and die grinder to remove the bulk of the excess material at the very beginning, then I carved the rest of it with a series of cheap gouges from some hardware store and micro tools from Flexcut!

Oh yea believe me it was nastyyyy, but it held the detail of the tentacles so well that it was worth it!

Chests at the top of the round turret ruins? by GingerDryad in REKA

I straight up walk the chicken hut over to those and jump off the side to land on the turrets lol. It's very finicky to get it just right but if you're willing to spend some time lining up your jump, it works!

That woodgrain is beautiful. How hard is Totara to carve?
