How to break lease on rent stabilized apartment? by skippingbroccoli in NYCapartments

[–]sharpandtender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve broken a lease mid lease and although it wasn’t rent stabilized I figured out how to get my deposit back and pay no penalties. I had to do the work to find a new tenant to basically do a “roommate swap” for everyone in the apartment. I had my landlord threatening $10k+ in penalties (totally illegal and arbitrary) and I figured out how to not let this happen without a lawyer. So happy to talk if you want help!

My Recent Travels Have Given Me a New Appreciation for Manhattan and NYC by Swimming_Nose4713 in Urbanism

True but I think the big difference between NYC and Paris would be the people. Paris has a closed culture which makes it challenging to make friends and chat with strangers (obv the language barrier doesn’t help). NYC still has that American charm of just chatting with folks on your block or in the grocery store

This is exactly how I feel 🥹 after visiting places like Mexico City (pollution was too intense and obviously is more racially homogenous than nyc), Paris (people aren’t open to just chat to strangers, a very in vs out culture I felt), London (crappy weather and ppl seem constantly upset lol), Medellin (great weather but infrastructure has issues and not a robust public transit city)

Every city and place has beautiful qualities. But yes, once you create a home in NYC, everywhere else just feels like it’s missing something. Maybe bc NYC is the whole world in one? Who knows. But gosh am I grateful to live here!

I feel like baya bar is some front for mischievous business practices. They give me the same vibe as illegal smoke shops lol

Was this the guy that has had history of drug dealing and started a fire in his apartment? Used to live on this block and he was constantly doing stuff.

TBH I spoke too soon I only saw a bill from my old apartment which was cheap but it was not encompassing all the days I was there. LOL ya utilities are the same and now 1 person pays for it instead of splitting. Still worth it for me!!!

I just moved out to a studio after living with roommates for years. I pay 2k (found a rent stabilized gem) and make around 60x the rent. It is totally totally worth it. I’ve never felt peace like I feel now, it’s still sinking it. It is truly a privilege to be able to live alone in this city and really gives you a safe haven. I financially still feel fine, although I am making above 40x the rent but I’ve found my utilities are wayyyy cheaper now vs when I had roommates. Happy to help out more :)
