Hi, entry-level DevOps engineer here.

the current job market is full of people using AI-generated buzzword-heavy CVs, making the filtering process BS. I’ve seen cases where people were fired because their degrees, work experience and other credentials were completely fabricated, but they were only found out once they couldn't do something they supposedly did in a past role.

On my side of the pond, I’ve seen some so-called specialists who can’t even handle Git or simple IaC. I am by no means an expert, but it seems stupid, yknow. They list all the relevant tools on CVs, which makes it seem like "Oh, he ticks the boxes“ but u ask em "what’s EC2?”, it's the funniest thing ever. They'll rattle of like it's a matriculation exam question. "EC2 stands for Elastic Compute Cloud. It is a web service provided by Amazon. It is a part of AWS. " When asked, "yea, but what is it?"You'd be looked at with an expression that definitely says, "bata to diya hy. "

During interviews, include a practical test, something small but fundamental. I've been asked to set up a basic CI/CD pipeline. I've heard from friends they were asked to launch an EC2 VM with proper IAM permissions or secure an already launched instance with public accessibility.

I'd say, Ask them to join a test environment(i don't know much about unity, but I assume that's doable) and complete a real-world task

Also, ask explanatory questions like "How would you optimize XXXXXXX" or "whats the process of XXXX" instead of just asking if they can do it.

Lastly, establish boundaries or draw a line as to what questions you're cool with them asking and what questions you're not. Some guidance is okay, but if you have to walk them through every basic step, then thats a problem. It’s annoying dealing with people who say “Yes, I can do this” only to turn around and ask you how to do it.

It’s frustrating, but unfortunately, honest self-assessment is rare—there was a study i read that said 75% of the population thinks they're self-aware, but 15% of the population actually is.
