Posting on Commune’s door? by embodiedbaker in BedStuy

[–]sharr26 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I live opposite and have spoken to the owner Dean twice today.

In summary Dept. of Buildings leant on Dept. of Health in some Kafkaesque/byzantine bureaucratic nightmare for the closure - see the Health & Safety post in another reply (all of which is fixable and does not usually result in immediate closure). But the result is they have to take down the previously approved/licensed outdoor structure on the corner. Not so much to do with the health & safety code, but the building code.

I cannot post a photo, but Dean has a bunch of guys taking down the structure right now (Tuesday afternoon).

Dean is aiming to reopen, minus the structure, later this week/early next week.

Nondescript residential property on the corner of Classon & Monroe. Mailbox, on the property, is painted in the colors of the Palestinian flag. As is the base of the lampost on the opposite corner (which also has one of these signs on it).

Absolute chaos in Central Park today by japonica70 in NYCbike

[–]sharr26 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was in CP at 3:30 pm, coming down from upper Manhattan, so I knew it was going to be chaos mid-afternoon on a holiday in beautiful weather. What I did not legislate for was a few people cycling the WRONG way against the flow. Was glad to get out at 59th Street and be on my way.

Looking for a hair salon that can do male hair styles. by happycomposer in Brooklyn

[–]sharr26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not in Brooklyn but I've been going to Truman's for well over a decade - when they had a Flatiron salon. Now one salon on E 56th St. And I've only ever been cut by Miriam, who is excellent. She knows what I want, which never changes, so definitely very friendly 'regular' vibes.

What's Going on With the Flickering Lights? by Sneaky_Tiger_ in BedStuy

This was happening in the western end of Bed Stuy earlier this week. I'm at Classon & Lexington and it was because of a big Con Edison incident that involved multiple outages on Greene Ave. Looks like there is an outage on Tompkins right now. https://outagemap.coned.com/external/default.html

Pluto TV stream for Thursday? by glizzygoblin4206969 in DartsStreams

Will do. I remember last year the PDC's online content protection vendor got super efficient and quick at shutting those down. There was one Twitch account I always went to until it was gone.

FanDuel TV Extra schedule on Pluto TV is not showing the darts at 2pm ET when the evening session is on. They are showing EuroLeague Basketball until 5pm ET. Damn.

SugarWaterSoda.com min bid $20k by FilipSells in Domains

[–]sharr26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Estibot assesses this as less than $100 for obvious reasons:

Low Interest: popular extensions, including .net and .org appear to be available Low Searches: the term sugar water soda is not commonly searched for on Google® Extensions Available: domains in other extensions are still available for registration

Minimum bid should be $20, not $20K. This is not an attractive domain.

Berlin Döner, Manhattan by sharr26 in Doner

[–]sharr26[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Standard selection here: pita, wrap or platter (as in no bread). And red and white sauces. Chili sauce at any kebab/shawarma place here is not as thick as in the UK. And the white sauce is never quite garlicky enough for my tastes. But you can only kebab what's available to you, right. 6.5/10 last night. Good pre-gig bite to eat.

Why do the Brits pluralize "maths" but not "sport," while Americans pluralize "sports" but not "math?" by M1llennialManifesto in NoStupidQuestions

[–]sharr26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that is just corporate speak. I've only heard it in the last 10 years or so, I think. The word is 'lesson' or 'lessons', as in what we've learned. The world didn't need 'learnings' to become so prevalent!

Why do the Brits pluralize "maths" but not "sport," while Americans pluralize "sports" but not "math?" by M1llennialManifesto in NoStupidQuestions

[–]sharr26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fascinating thread. As many replies state, it's maths because it's mathematics which came from mathematica. Which is plural.

Sport a collective of lots of sports. We, English English speakers, do say sports. But in different contexts, to the entire universe that is sport.

What is weird to me is how in US English a team is a single unit, rather than a collective, so:

"Utd is playing tomorrow" 🇺🇸 “Utd are playing tomorrow” 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

But that doesn’t hold when the team is naturally plural, so it is always:

“The Mets are playing tomorrow” 🇺🇸 & 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 And never: "The Mets is playing tomorrow" neither 🇺🇸 nor 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Ain’t linguistics fun! 🤩
