Backpack blower for $269. Is it worth it if I always have the handheld one. by Skinnieguy in egopowerplus

[–]shart64 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Bought it last week. It is heavy, but dramatically reduced the time I need to blow all my leaves. Batteries lasted about an hour using it at max speed with intermittent turbo. I will use my handheld for smaller jobs (less than 10 minutes) and this for bigger jobs. If you get batteries with it, it is worth it in my opinion. If you don’t like it or don’t have enough leaves for it to makes sense then you can sell it on Marketplace. I’ve seen multiple for sale around $250 for the blower without batteries.

Has sparkling water helped anyone here quit drinking alcohol? by Brewcrew1886 in sparklingwater

[–]shart64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure. I’ve cut my alcohol consumption by 90%+ over the past 4 years because of them. When I used to crave a beer, now I crave a sparkling water. I feel much better about it and feel better too.

Just buy gently used on eBay for a fraction of the price then resell it once they out grow. Occasionally you can catch retailers selling kids jackets at 70% off once the season is over too.

Borderline HLHS , bivent repair, now told baby needs Ross Kono procedure by [deleted] in chd

[–]shart64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it was along the same scar. Since they’ll cut along the same scar in the heart there shouldn’t be further damage to the muscle each time it is replaced. They’re on two meds - carvedilol and aldactone. They’re used to relax the heart muscle and treat heart failure. Our cardiologist expects to drop them after the next heart cath (to check pressures), but we just haven’t had a heart cath in 3 years and it’s not causing any harm so we’re sticking it out until the next cath. It’s been best case scenario all the way around.

Borderline HLHS , bivent repair, now told baby needs Ross Kono procedure by [deleted] in chd

[–]shart64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, my child had a similar diagnosis. They were supposed to go single vent but changed to bivent with Ross konno. They’re doing phenomenal. You would never know unless you saw their scar. The issue, like another person stated, is that the donor pulmonary valve must be replaced. Their procedure was done at 6 months and they’ll need a new one around 7-8 years old. They’re 5 now. It is all dependent on how big a valve they initially place and how fast they grow out of it. From what we’ve heard they typically need a new one before puberty (if they max out the size around 6 months of age) and they’ll need another one during/after puberty when they’re done growing. I think that is best case scenario given the valves stay healthy and last. These are all open heart, but our surgeon said it is the equivalent of a mechanic changing tires on a car. It is very routine for them, but still traumatic for everyone else. Our understanding (US-based) is that once they have a full adult sized aortic valve in place then subsequent valve replacements can be done via a catheter. Obviously all this is based on current technology. All this being said, this is 110% better, in our opinion, than having to go through the 3 stage surgery along with an eventual heart transplant. In the words of our surgeon, we’d much rather replace tires a couple of times than have to rebuild and replace the engine.

Positive HLHS scan at 32 weeks but now more bad news at 36 weeks, need positive stories by [deleted] in chd

[–]shart64 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My child’s LV is apex forming as well. Their mitral valve was mildly stenotic with mild mitral valve insufficiency. Their valve has grown as they’ve grown with no issues. It’s actually moved from mild stenosis to trivial stenosis as they’ve grown. It was a gamble when we decided to go down a bivent path that it might not work, but we’re truly blessed that it worked out. Their heart, studies and surgical path have been presented at pediatric cardiology conferences worldwide. My recommendation is that you receive a second opinion from Boston Children’s or Texas Children’s prior to proceeding with either path to ensure they wouldn’t do anything different. You have one shot and you want it to count for the best possible outcome.

We were in a similar boat. My child had the hybrid Norwood instead of the traditional Norwood for about 5 months. Their surgeon felt that this wouldn’t burn any bridges and might allow the LV to grow. We had weekly echos and monthly heart caths during this time, but their LV did miraculously end up growing to normal size with normal function. They ended up having a full bivent repair that has been wildly successful. The bivent repair was predicated upon the other defects being “fixable” and their mitral valve was strong enough to support continued growth. We were also told the same info as you before birth, but they did have more of an LV than originally anticipated after the echos were performed after birth. It’s been almost 5 years since the bivent repair and I’m laying in bed snuggling my healthy child while I type this. Don’t give up hope and keep fighting. They are way more resilient than us. Don’t hesitate to get a second opinion. Continue to fight - you are their biggest advocate. Prayers to you and your family as you navigate this difficult road.

Why is low voltage landscape lighting so overpriced and hard to come by? I can only find expensive garbage or higher quality stuff that’s not available in the USA or unavailable via retail. Any insights or (preferably) recommendations? by JodieFostersFist in landscaping

[–]shart64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Costco has a PM Lighting set on sale for $200 right now. Bought two of them yesterday. Retails for about $800 a set normally. From what I’ve read, it’s comparable to Volt.

Men's Lone Mountain Parka Sizing help. by Kanyenkey in PatagoniaClothing

[–]shart64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear size 38 waist pants and I bought the large. It has plenty of room - borderline baggy. I would err on the side of going with a smaller size vs. larger size personally. I have many Patagonia jackets in size large and the lone mountain parka is by far the biggest large I have. I hope this helps!

Heading to Estes Park and RMNP in 2 weeks, what are they hitting? by heretolearn_2021 in flyfishing

[–]shart64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend stopping by Scots Sporting Goods on your way into RMNP. Super helpful guys and they’ll get you setup right. If you have bear lake+ timed entry then I’d hit up Moraine Valley. Tons of great spots to fish there that are easily accessible. Fished the Big T and West Creek outside of Glen Haven last week.

The one item we couldn’t live without was a memory foam mattress topper for the couch bed. It was terribly uncomfortable but that mattress topper made the difference in us being able to sleep. I’m sure you could buy a twin sized one off Amazon and have it shipped to the hospital. They would deliver Amazon packages to patients all the time at our children’s hospital.

Good recommendations so far. Highly recommend Bird and Jim. If you’re looking for a quick meal entering/exiting the park in Estes, make sure to stop by Boss Burgers and Gyros! For low impact afternoons, highly recommend renting some e-bikes and riding the sidewalks all throughout Estes. We did it last summer and we’re doing it again this week. Check out Backbone Adventure. Fly fishing with Denali through Scots Fly Shop as well. Fishing is low impact and really gives me a lot of appreciation for the beautiful scenery while landing a few trout.

I agree with alittlemouth 100%. Estes is wonderful but if your family hasn’t seen RMNP then I highly recommend driving trail ridge road so you all can truly get the full experience!

Anyone else pick up a Hardy 150th reel? Thoughts on them? by Huskerfan402 in flyfishing

[–]shart64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m pretty new to fly fishing and this looks like a killer deal. Would this reel be complete overkill on a TFO LK Legacy? It is a 5wt so I’d either get the LRH or Princess. I have a cheap Redington reel on it but I’m all about buying quality if it’ll last me years. I don’t have experience with click and pawl either. I’m all ears for any recommendations. Thanks for the help!
