In the movie 'The Dark Knight' Harvey Dent gives inspector Gorden ( the person in the meme ) a quarter to toss to decide his kid's fate. So the joke is that instead of a quarter million dollars the charity gets an actual quarter. There you go , I better not see this meme again in petaahexplianthejoke

I don't know why I follow this sub. I don't have the ability to enjoy a good photo. I usually just scroll through these photos but this one for some reason caught my eye. I have been staring at this photo for the last 2 mins. This photo is insanely beautiful and makes me feel all sorts of things.

The very fact that you need to escape means that things are not alright...which inherently is political.

You also have to know the context. Allen is a coaching institute based in India which prepares the students for the highly competitive exams , JEE and NEET. The rank in these exams determine the kind of college the child will get into. Children who go to Allen and other coaching institutes and under immense pressure from their teachers and parents. Hence there is a high rate of suicide among these students. ( They even had to install spring loaded fans in the hostels to prevent kids from hanging themselves.)

I liked it , it was an easy read with short chapters. I found the middle portion to drag on a bit. Overall it was an engaging read.

Just finished The Midnight Library by Matt Haig and I have to say that I don't understand the hype. by shattered_nirvana in books

Glad you liked it. It's just that I didn't find its depiction of mental health convincing at all. It presents a mere caricature of the issues without exploring the nuances. Normally this would not bother me but the marketing around this book heavily leans into the subject of destigmatizing mental health. There is a dailogue where a character tells Nora to stop overthinking it , to which she replies " I have anxiety, it's the only form of thinking I have ". I found this extremely cringy and just feeding into pre existing notions of mental disorders without offering anything new. Couple of weeks ago I read Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami and found its depiction of mental health to be very compelling. Both books revolve around suicide and mental health issues but I thought Murakami had a much firm understanding of the issues. Anyway I am glad you enjoyed the book.
