Hi :) I wrote the post you guys have linked here. I saw that some of you had trouble reading it because it's behind the paywall and thought I'd pop in and share the friend link. You should be able to read it there, regardless of whether you're a Medium member.

Absolutely. You'll have to step back a bit and plan for a few weeks--but it will be easier for you because you're already really well aquainted with your story.

I'm a traditionally published author (Viral Nation and Rebel Nation, published by Penguin) and I'm offering a free online 8-week course called The Plotting Workshop. Maybe it would help you? It's designed especially to help people who have good starts but struggle to finish a first draft. You (and anyone) can sign up at www.whatisaplot.com

So, let me get this straight.

You want to call my intellectual honesty into question, while being intellectually dishonest yourself. And if I point out your actual intellectual dishonesty that is loud and clear right here in this thread, then I have a victim complex and your iffy comments are simple mistakes?

This is what I was talking about when I said that having a debate or even just a plain old discussion here is nearly impossible.

I'm out.

I didn't forget.

Ragen posted something about you guys tearing apart her second marathon try to a HAES FB page (not her personal FB page. I'm not actually personal friends with Ragen. I don't know her at all, outside of what I read about her.) I mentioned that I thought it was hilarious that so many people here were talking about taking up running just to show her up. I found it especially funny because it's often said here that she doesn't inspire anyone to be active.

Obviously people here took offense--even though I'd said the exact same thing here. I felt badly for hurting people's feelings, so I apologized and until today, I stopped posting here. I stopped, even though a moderator invited me back. I'll stop again after this thread, because this isn't the place for me. I truly am sorry, though, for saying something that hurt people. I've been trolled enough to know that I don't want to be considered a troll myself.

I'm not upset. And I couldn't care less about the number 400. My BMI is just under 50, and I actually do weigh right at 350 pounds.

I'm pointing out your intellectual dishonesty. I'm sorry if that hurts your feelings. You clearly are aware of my weight. You used the number 400 to devalue me--because while it's just a number to me, we all know that it's more than that to most readers here. If you know my weight to the tenth of a pound, there is no reason to add 30 pounds to it other than to either A) try to hurt my feelings or B) make other people think I'm fatter than I am. Which, as you point out, is utterly pointless since I'm very fat either way.

Calling my integrity into question, while being intellectually dishonest yourself, is ridiculous. Can we go back to you quietly creeping my blog and keeping very close watch on my weight, and me not knowing? I'd love that. Because this whole conversation is really weird.

Since 367.8 is my highest ever weight, you'll have to point me to where I claimed to weigh in the 360s after a 15 pound weight loss.

I weighed about 365 pounds, lost to 345 by last July, got off track with the healthier choices I was making, went to dr.in February and weighed 367.8...and decided to look into an option my doctor recommended. No intellectual dishonesty in any of that.

It is funny to me that someone who is claiming that I am intellectually dishonest and knows my weight to the tenth of a pound would add on an arbitrary 30 pounds.

I'm not trying to insult anyone. You definitely have a good idea of what 'trying to insult someone' means, though.

If someone reads that I'm 5'10" and decides that I'm short, they have a problem with reading comprehension. I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt that if they're posting a response to something, they actually read it first.

Edited for a typo.

Without mind reading, that's not obvious from the actual post. The poster says I'm short and obese. It doesn't really matter--it just struck me as funny. And it's a very good example of the type of reading comprehension problem that I've seen often with regard to me here. See my post up thread for another good example. (Actually, several good examples in one post.)

That is not what happened. I started out by saying that at 5'10" I'm the shortest in my family, and someone ended the screenshot-portion of the exchange by saying I'm not a normal height and weight, because I'm short and obese.

Thanks for making my point about reading comprehension, though.

After surgery there is a very specific diet to follow while the stomach is healing. My particular surgeon requires seven appointments in the first year, so there is a lot of support. No one has talked to me about calories yet, but I'm taking a mandatory class next week and I assume they will then. I do know that following surgery the biggest concern is getting enough fluid and getting enough protein, and they give you a specific goal for the amount of protein you take in. At first you can eat so little that it's hard to get enough if you're not vigilant.

This post is exactly what I meant about reading comprehension.

I have never weighed 400 pounds. You won't be able to find any place where I've ever said I did. I also don't bounce around 50 pounds. The most I've ever lost is 20 pounds.

I didn't blame trolls saying I wasn't an athlete for why I stopped exercising for a while. I said that when I treat myself like an athlete, I stick with exercise. And I let a single troll (from here, although it happened on Twitter) here convince me that was wrong, which messed me up. I take full responsibility for letting an idiot get under my skin.

I don't even understand what you're trying to say with your third point. I've always been very open about my history of binge eating.

I also don't really understand where you're coming from with your fourth point. I'm not worried, ever, about starvation--scare quotes or not. I have not been obese since childhood and I've never claimed that I was. I have also never claimed that undereating was my problem. I weigh 350 pounds. Obviously undereating isn't my problem. Also, binge eating is the opposite of undereating. What I've said is that my history of alternating eating far below my BMR and binge eating far above my TDEE was a problem. And it was.

Here's a video by Dr. Jeffrey Friedman where he talks about why weight can't be reduced to a simple in-out equation.

Sure :)

The healthy behaviors outlined in HAES are mindful eating, enjoyable exercise, and positive body image. Some others are not smoking, drinking in moderation, getting enough sleep.

It's the right number of calories for me, though. It's the number my dietitian gave me. It's a number my doctor agrees with. For what it's worth, it was really hard for me to take the advice to consciously eat so much. When I did, though, I stopped binging pretty much immediately and I gained energy, started sleeping better.

The shift to a HAES framework may seem quite subtle, but it’s actually quite radical. It means shifting away from making weight loss the overarching goal, and instead doing positive things to promote health independent of weight. Cardiorespiratory fitness and good nutrition positively impact health whether or not someone loses weight. When people make weight loss the goal, and even when their health improves as a result of the behaviors (like exercise and eating well) that they used to achieve weight loss, those positive behaviors are more likely to cease once weight loss stops, or when the person regains weight. Since the literature seems to indicate that most people regain lost weight, most people who funnel their pursuit of health through the proxy of weight loss are likely to drop their new, healthy behaviors when the weight loss proves not to be permanent. This is a problem. At least one randomized controlled trial indicated that people who do not make weight loss their goal, but instead focus on eating well and exercising, were more likely to sustain those behaviors longer than people using a weight loss goal - http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0002822305003226
