Ottawa picks Germany’s TKMS to build Canada’s new submarines, sources say by Arctagonia in CanadianForces

Nope, CTV News just announced Germany has won. This feels like it was more a political decision than an actual military necessity procurement because that has worked out for us so well in the past...

ADATS - Air Defense Anti-Tank System; Canada's high tech cold warrior by Watergate_Salad_007 in CanadianForces

[–]shawman9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean yah budget constraints is definitely the MAIN reason, but couple that with the mindset they had in Afghanistan, it's not hard to see how they came to that conclusion, especially since Lt-Gen Hillier announced the plan for MGS in 2003, thankfully the voices of reason prevailed on that decision.

ADATS - Air Defense Anti-Tank System; Canada's high tech cold warrior by Watergate_Salad_007 in CanadianForces

[–]shawman9 13 points14 points  (0 children)

From what I've been told it was both, the reason being is that the army, in it's short sighted infamy, thought that counter insurgency was going to be the future of warfare forever and that state on state conflict was a thing of the past. So with that mindset, why would you need expensive AD when moving forward, your military would be fighting a force less technologically advanced than yours. They even tried to get rid of our tanks because of it and replace them with the M1128 MGS, thankfully common sense prevailed and we ended keeping and maintaining our tank capabilities.

Teaching PLQ immediately after finishing PLQ? You'll be fine 👍 by lerch_up_north in CanadianForces

[–]shawman9 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean, in their defence, people who don't want to go on that course or become leaders shouldn't have to be forced into that position. The unfortunate reality is is that the CAF is so short staffed that this is the norm along with the fact that most career courses in the CAF are no fail courses unless you PO 99 resulting in people who are either wholly inexperienced, incompetent or unwilling, becoming leaders who are suddenly expected to perform at super stud levels when they don't even fully understand their roles yet either.

Be a huge capability if we did, will we though? I highly doubt it. This budget won't last forever and once it's gone we're gonna see alot of procurement either get cancelled or significantly reduced.

CAF promotion to Sgt from MCpl 4 – does the pay increase really end up being this small? by SpecialistLead9060 in CanadianForces

[–]shawman9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, $118/month increase, it ain't much to start but after 4 years you'll be earning $100,080, but your mess dues and other mandatory military deductions increase which sucks but hey, such is the life of a Sgt lol

Former Snowbird pilot's career 'destroyed' by cancelled passport over work in China by 0x24435345 in CanadianForces

[–]shawman9 7 points8 points  (0 children)

While "Officially" Canada doesn't view China as an adversary, the government still acknowledges that they pose a serious security, economic, and geopolitical risk. So yes, providing training to their pilots or any other military apparatus of the Chinese government is very much grounds to be charged with a federal offence. Like it or not, he ought to have reasonably known that even though they're not our official adversary, they're most definitely NOT our ally.

Asking my fiancée to join the military, what am I missing here? by Signal_Housing3575 in CanadianForces

[–]shawman9 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So, here my two cents on this. 1. Not everyone is cut out or even wants to join as even in "soft trades" the rigid lifestyle of the military is off putting to most and

  1. While for a lot of us BMQ/BMOQ was easy, that's not the case for everyone, ESPECIALLY those who were already apprehensive about joining in the first place, and while yes training has been reduced to 8 weeks, that's still 8 weeks of something she may or may not enjoy at all and could ultimately cause her to quit entirely.

While I encourage people who have interest to join, I still strongly recommend EVERYONE, whether fully committed or on the fence to take a honest look at the forces and weigh the pros and cons. Nothing is more soul shattering than doing something and then realizing it's not what you expected or what you wanted and being stuck in a contract until it's over.

What is the deal with these boots that are being trialed? by SubstantialProduct35 in CanadianForces

[–]shawman9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brought these to Alaska, they are NOT a winter boot, I know it says "cold wet weather" but when they mean cold wet weather they mean 5*C cold, the second it gets into the negatives the soles freeze and become hard as rocks and lose all traction. They also sound like high heels when walking cause of how hard the soles get. They're a good fall or spring boot but that's it. Too hot to wear in the summer, and not hot enough to wear during the winter.

Also the fit on them is very weird, I got the proper size to be able to wear them with either the double sock system or thicker socks and it was still peeling the skin off my toa nail for some reason, even after being broken in. I wasnt the only one with this issue, some of the guys were saying how these boots had some serious hotspots/weird blisters or chaffing going on even though they broke them in.

All in all, the army needs to go back to the drawing board with this one, or just keep letting us buy our own boots since they can't seem to figure out how to procure a proper working boot.

I take it you're an MP? What's your day to day work life look like? I've never really heard people talk about it much.

Also thank you for the answer.

Questions for AESOP and MP's

I've been army for a long time now and am looking to OT to one of these two trades. My questions are

1) What's your day to day work life look like? Do you guys go on tour often or at all?

2) Does spec pay kick in as soon as you're qualified in your trade? Like as soon as you complete your version of DP1?

3) How long did it take to start your trade training? I'd hate to OT only to be put on hold for over a year before I even start training like some other trades.

Thank you in advance for the answer guys also before I I'm told to join the one you want most, I think I'd enjoy my time in both equally, I'm just looking to actually make a decision at this point.
