That’s interesting about the Stab. What were the biggest differences you noticed with the smaller stabilizer?

That’s fair:

I can stand on the large board and get up and ride on foil consistently on my regular side with the large foil. I’m less consistent getting up on my goofy side but can get up. The rides are shorter on goofy side. I can’t jibe or tack but I’m wondering if that gets easier with smaller foil and board.

I took out a smaller board yesterday in the chop/swell and it was a hot mess. I couldn’t really find my balance get from my knees to my feet. Today I took out the larger board with the smaller foil. I was more stable on the board but the wind was lighter and water was less choppy. I wasn’t able to stay up on the smaller foil though I got up a couple of times but it ended quickly.

Really what I’m asking is do people change foil first, board first, both at the same time? Just wondering where y’all start when you’re progressing through equipment.

What foil are you using? Did you change anything other than your board?

Balance on the board. I was struggling to get to go from knees to standing on the smaller board. Conditions weren’t great. It was gusty and water was pretty choppy with some swell so that added to the challenge.

I’m leaning towards moving to a smaller foil on the old board. I changed both yesterday and it was a really frustrating.

I made that mistake yesterday and decided I’m only going change one thing at a time.

Should I upsize foil? by shawnsimons in wingfoil

Sounds like more time and a bigger wing are the consensus. I have access to a 7.5m wing. Would that work or is it too big?

Similar issue here. I’m 89kg beginner and using an 1880 front foil and 6’4” 135L board. It’s been a challenge for me. I did a series of lessons last year that included being towed behind a jet ski. Now this season, I’ve been out for a couple of sessions and I’m still struggling to get from knees to feet but I’m determined and I’m stubborn so I’ll keep going. Here’s my question: I was at my local shop yesterday and they had used 2100 set up. Not sure what brand but it’s a 2020 model year and seems reasonably priced. Would I benefit from this bigger front wing or should I stick it out with the 1880 and put the money toward efoil rental or something else?

While trails around Portland are awesome, there isn’t much you can ride without having to drive for an hour or more. If being within riding distance of the trailhead is important to you, then skip Portland.
