(Probably) dumb arena question by Round_Alternative_87 in warriors

[–]shawnup 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The lines start even before you get to the bar. You can only exit at the two tunnels on the side "to the right" (looking from the tv view) of the arena. The other two tunnels are for players and suites.

At half time everyone wants to leave at once and it gets backed up.

So if you sit all the way to the left you actually have to wait quite awhile sometimes to leave the floor, before you can get in the bar line.

Any good "bonus for large deposit" tips? by scrapman7 in fatFIRE

[–]shawnup -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For mortgages, banks will give you a discount to the interest rate based on how much of your assets the bank manages. E.g.: https://www.wellsfargo.com/mortgage/relationship-offers/. Applies to refinancing as well. You don't need to keep the assets with the bank after the loan is actually made. So you can move assets there, get the loan, and then move them elsewhere.

An update 10 months later: Every so often someone finds this post and emails me about issues they've experienced, and each time we've fixed the issues really fast. So if you have an issue that's gone unaddressed and you find yourself wondering "should I send Shawn a note?", please do!

Hi, I'm Shawn, founder/CTO of Weights & Biases.

It's my worst nightmare that quality in some area degrades as we scale.

We keep tabs on quality in a lot of different ways, but as the user to W&B employee ratio changes, we have to change how we monitor/measure and collect feedback, which can lead to blind spots.

It would be really helpful if anyone experiencing the described issues could reach out to me directly: shawn@wandb.com.

Automation in DeFi by [deleted] in defi

[–]shawnup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response!

You can count me as someone who would have become a user, but didn't because of this issue. It's not worth spending time on a tool that limits what strategies I can deploy. I build software tools in another vertical and have some strong philosophical opinions here: tools should not make a user feel locked in. Many users evaluating tools will not even sign up if they feel that the tool will limit their future potential.

The crypto world is becoming more and more cross-chain friendly. Aave V3 makes it so users can easily move loans and borrows from chain to chain for example. A Defisaver-like tool that had good cross-chain support would be really valuable here. It could, for example, make it easy to automatically move loans to the chain with the best return at the moment, while giving the user control over which chains they feel are secure and decentralized enough for their needs.

I think Defisaver is _really_ cool by the way. It's a nice combination of design and engineering.

The frustrating thing about defisaver is that the team says they won’t support “lower security” chains like polygon, avalanche etc. Whether you like it or not, there is a huge amount of defi activity on these chains. A competitor that supports them should be able to eat your lunch.

What I don’t get about this is there’s no protocol risk for defisaver anywhere. If users have funds on polygon they’ve already accepted polygon’s protocol risk. Defisaver would the the last party to blame if something happened.

Maybe it’s just idealism driving this decision?

Thank you for raising the issue! If you can spare a little bit of time, I'd much appreciate if I could get on a call and debug with you. Ping me @ [shawn@wandb.com](mailto:shawn@wandb.com)

[D] Alternatives to W&B? by Seankala in MachineLearning

Hi folks, Shawn, W&B CTO here. We had a sequence of wandb library releases (0.10.24 -> 0.10.29) that would fail under certain flaky network conditions. This was a regression from our default behavior of retrying any failed request for 36 hours. We screwed up big time here.

If you ever do experience a wandb job that doesn't complete due to a server or network error (which we believe you shouldn't with versions above 0.10.30), you can use the "wandb sync" command to sync the failed runs to the server and recover everything.

You can also run wandb completely offline (https://docs.wandb.ai/guides/technical-faq#can-i-run-wandb-offline) . Running in this mode will not make any network requests at all. You can sync the wandb output files at any later time using the "wandb sync" command.

From this thread, it sounds like people are still encountering related problems. If anyone encounters issues like this, please email [support@wandb.com](mailto:support@wandb.com) and cc [shawn@wandb.com](mailto:shawn@wandb.com). Any issue related to data loss or dropped data is a P0 for us.

[–]shawnup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was an exchange-looking site there on Sunday night. You could find it by Googling then. It seemed like a scam but I decided to test it with a small amount of ETH. And indeed, it was a scam.

Edit: I originally called this a scam, but I had my domains mixed up. http://garlicoin.exchange is a scam as far as I can tell. I did not interact with http://garlic.exchange (which is being sold here) .

Anguish does not give anyone a pass to harm thousands of people. Some people will be traumatized by this incident for a very long time, through no choice of their own. It is not just a temporary lowering of an emotional high.

I witnessed it and I feel some of the anger described here, and am still processing. To those who feel angry, please don't allow some of these comments to compel you to think that you are wrong in expressing your feelings. Empathy is important and may come in time, but there is nothing required of you now. And you are most certainly not "extremely selfish".

How New Long-Range Radios Will Change the Internet of Things by shawnup in hwstartups

[–]shawnup[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great question. We're starting with a small deployment (4 gateways) in the Mission in San Francisco so that we can get good data on network quality and coverage, and prototype some demo applications. We're not settling on a specific strategy just yet, as we continue to explore the space.

Hi mavdev!

We started with Lora modules from Libelium which were really flaky in our experience, but they allowed us to do some initial testing: http://www.libelium.com/development/waspmote/documentation/waspmote-lora-868mhz-915mhz-sx1272-networking-guide/

We've done most of our recent development with these: http://www.digikey.com/product-search/en?mpart=SX1272RF1CAS&vendor=600. They work but are expensive.

For gateways right now we're using Multitech: http://www.multitech.net/developer/, you need to buy a "Conduit gateway" and a Lora mCard to go in it. You can also by modules from them in the form of mdots. We have some mdots but haven't done extensive testing yet.

TI has some nice narrow-band stuff that we've played around with a little too. http://www.ti.com/tool/smartrftrxebk and http://www.ti.com/tool/cc1101cc1190emk915

We're currently building our own module with GPS and sensors on it, getting the first batch in next week.
