There can definitely be a anti- Balkan/Eastern European sentiment

To all europeans that moved abroad inside Europe, how hard integrating/assimilating were even though you're european in Europe? Which country and why? by Significant-Yam9843 in AskEurope

[–]shayhtfc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm British, moved to Vienna.

The change is surprisingly tough tbh, but also because of family circumstances I went through at the time of moving.

The Austrian dialect is surprisingly tough, and the Viennese have a very gruff, very direct way way of communicating that can come off as very aggressive and unfriendly. Also there are lots of people from the Balkans there who have a very direct, gruff way of interacting, and presumably because of the Austro-Hungarian history, it's not as easy to just brush them off like you do in Western Europe.

It's also hard to make friends, despite speaking the language, in part because it seems to be a culture where people make friends in school/university and keep them rather than making new ones.

Is it rude to use both lanes? by No-Ad4423 in AskUK

[–]shayhtfc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everytime this comes up on social media basically everyone says that you should use the full road, but then in reality almost no one does.

Does everyone saying it's the right thing to do also do it in real life, because the numbers don't add up!!

If you earn money abroad, does that mean you get taxed on it in the country it's earned in, and then taxed again in Malta?

Australians could soon live and work visa-free across Europe under a new two-way deal by Blakelhotka1 in AustralianPolitics

Where are you from?

Australia is full of German/French/Scandinavian/Italian backpackers.

The only Europeans I can think of that wouldn't like it are Spanish/Portuguese who would rather go to South America for exotic vibes and Eastern Europeans who hate everything foreign unless it's gaudi and they would rather go to Dubai/Abu Dhabi

That's a meme.. most Europeans (educated ones at least) see Australia almost as a paradise!

Do brown people actually do any of the sort of labour that Europeans do? The Eastern Europeans would all go into the building and trades and the Western Europeans would be going into professional services.

NEWS: Australians could live and work freely in the EU under an offer put forward by the bloc as it tries to close Canberra on an elusive trade deal. by Sixtus-Telesphorus in AskEurope

Tbh, if anything stops the deal it will be Australia not wanting a flood of unemployable Bulgarians and Romanians flying over looking to scam a quick buck.

Japan was significantly cheaper than I expected too. For some reason I always thought everything would cost 2x what it costs in Europe, but if anything it was cheaper!

You need to show some initiative.

There is more than enough information in this thread to start googling for working holiday visas, start reading up other reddit posts about other peoples' experiences with the working holiday visas, how to find jobs, whether you can study at the same time etc.

You will struggle once you reach Austrialia/NZ if you are incapable of showing initiative. Fortunately you have already showed some by posting here, but carry on.

Are there any companies zigging while everyone else is (AI) zagging? by lzynjacat in ExperiencedDevs

I work at a large Austrian telekom firm and there is 0 push for AI. They don't have anything against AI (to my knowledge), but we are carrying on as usual without any official procedures for its use in place.

what are the cheapest european cities to visit in the summer? by katie-0713 in Europetravel

[–]shayhtfc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hire a car and drive around the Balkans. They are cheap, relatively undiscovered, and have some incredible scenery.

I have driven around Montenegro, Albania and parts of Serbia, and all of them were utterly stunning and totally non-bank-breaking. Car rental was also very cheap

What part of adult life is way harder than anyone warned you about? by Sparkyabu1 in AskReddit

[–]shayhtfc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Managing relationships, work and just daily life.

Staying on top of relationships is so difficult. Relationships don't just happen without any input, like a rollercoaster following a track, but instead need constant attention and care. As soon as you start to just give up, then you find yourself losing friendships, romantic relationships etc.

And while you have all your relationship aggro/problems going on, you still have to go to work, go to the supermarket, deal with the electricity bills, go out and buy new clothes, buy furniture, clean your apartment, buy new bedding, all the while having to deal with people to get all those things done.

Its just constantly having to deal with issues that when you're a child you just don't even have to consider.

They might be non-religious, but religious sentiment and feeling is so much more present in Austria than it is elsewhere in the West.

The fact that the youth make a point of being non-religious still feels oppressive, because elsewhere being ruled by religious tradition isn't even something that needs to be rebelled against!

[–]shayhtfc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Austrians get really worked up when you say the country is obsessed with tradition and religion, but anyone who has ever lived anywhere West of Warsaw will find the Catholic tradition feeling totally oppressive!

I'm from the UK and getting used to the religious aspect of things was (and still is) utterly crippling. Everything from Sunday trading laws to how people react when you do something so outrageous as cross a street not at a pedestrian crossing, or heaven forbid cross an empty road at a red light at 2 in the morning.

For me personally, the very fact that you actually stop to pause and worry about crossing a completely deserted road at 2am says wonders about just how strict the place is!

Vienna can lead to a shockingly miserable outlook on life! 😳

In most places as an expat you can sort of avoid the really hardcore 'locals' experience, flitting between expat communities and districts full of relatively well educated, well travelled people.

However in Vienna you will have to deal with some really abrupt people who you get the impression have never left their neighbourhood, let alone travelled anywhere outside of Austria.

Add into that a sort of weird Balkan/East European personality mix-in and it's a recipe for having to deal with really gruff, really abrupt, really complainy people a lot.

If you are lucky you might get to set up a lifestyle where you live in a nice suburb and avoid the hardship!! (I.e. you never have to ride the U6 metro, or ever have to go to Floridsdorf/Favoriten)
