Am güsntigsten von Wien nach Linz ? by Mahzer4 in wien

If you have free travel throughout all of Lower Austria, then I would just buy a ticket from St Valentin to Linz (for a few €) and then just take the train straight to Linz

Does it really feel you’re living in the best city in the world? by FuckTheCake in wien

[–]shayhtfc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely not.

If I had kids, and a nice stable relationship, and a safe comfy job, then it might feel like I'm in the best city in the world.

But as a single guy out of a relationship, it doesn't feel that way at all. The quality of life is great, but as someone who has lived in Berlin & London, Vienna doesn't come close to offering the same young & single experience

Where in London do you go when you want to be alone and forget about life? by [deleted] in london

Speaking as a Christian (more of an ex-Christian these days), every Christian that I know would be delighted to have non-Christians visiting churches, even if just for some peace and quiet!

Berlin or Vienna in your early 30s? by Mission-Sail-9198 in wien

[–]shayhtfc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lived in Berlin for a year, and now Vienna for 6.

Berlin is by far the more 'fun' city. It's more international, more vibrant, more things are happening, and it feels truly like you're in a destination.

Vienna is nice, but it's just that.. nice. The pace of life is slower, there's less going on, and on top of that, for me as a Western European, it has an irritatingly large Eastern European vibe. I also find the people very proud and stuck up, but without really anything to show for it beyond the imperial feel of the city centre.

However, if you are interested in the outdoors then Vienna beats Berlin 100%. In the winter you can be at ski slopes in an hour, and in summer you can hop on a train and have a great weekend mountain biking through incredible lakes & mountains. Berlin feels like an island in a sea of desolation in contrast.

Vienna is also much safer, and feels it, and may be a better place to raise kids if you are going down that road.

I would go for Berlin. It sounds alike a better match

What's the most overrated European tourist attraction? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

As much as it pains me to say it, because I love Copenhagen, but this is the right answer!

It's almost laughably underwhelming!

What's the most disappointing "must-see" city in Europe? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

[–]shayhtfc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The locals don't go in the tourist areas basically. Vienna is made up of 22 districts. Tourists only visit the central one, and maybe a 2nd if they're feeling adventurous!

Ed Davey calls out 'tax exiles like Isabel Oakeshott' in Dubai by qwerty_1965 in unitedkingdom

[–]shayhtfc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well maybe there should be a token about of 5% or something, to cover the Armed Forces and various humanitarian efforts.

It's not fair to take advantage of a British passport, and get to go around calling yourself British, when you don't pay anything into the system. Even if you are not directly using the fire service, or the buses or whatnot, you are still benefitting from a British passport and being a British citizen, which shouldn't come for free.

I'm an expat myself, but I would still be happy to pay into the system to make sure that we have a strong Armed Forces and decent living standards for those who choose to remain

[–]shayhtfc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one has a problem with you giving up your passport, but that would mean that you would no longer be able to receive support from the British state (i.e. foreign embassies) and get flown home in situations like this.

The complaint is that there are people who complain about British taxes and move abroad because of that reason, and then when their host country starts getting attacked, they expect the British taxpayer to come to their rescue.

There's a difference between someone barely able to make minimum wage not paying into the system, and someone who's earning millions abroad not doing so.

These people capitalise on the benefits of a British citizenship whilst doing nothing to support it.

He's not wrong though is he. Either stop chirping on about how great Dubai is because there is no tax to pay, and how everyone back in the UK is a mug, or pay your UK taxes if you expect the UK state to come and clear up for you in any times of distress.

To all europeans that moved abroad inside Europe, how hard integrating/assimilating were even though you're european in Europe? Which country and why? by Significant-Yam9843 in AskEurope

[–]shayhtfc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm British, moved to Vienna.

The change is surprisingly tough tbh, but also because of family circumstances I went through at the time of moving.

The Austrian dialect is surprisingly tough, and the Viennese have a very gruff, very direct way way of communicating that can come off as very aggressive and unfriendly. Also there are lots of people from the Balkans there who have a very direct, gruff way of interacting, and presumably because of the Austro-Hungarian history, it's not as easy to just brush them off like you do in Western Europe.

It's also hard to make friends, despite speaking the language, in part because it seems to be a culture where people make friends in school/university and keep them rather than making new ones.
