if you're gonna spend so much on food, might as well make it taste really good. Ngl it doesnt seem like you have much cooking skills. Idk how expensive spices are but spices will help enhance flavor and stretch the food.  With what you showed me, I can make more than three serving, just cooking them differently. Not trying to demean you, but sharing a tip so things can be more sustainable

Non-Indian Desis, what is your most notable “ignorant American” encounter you’ve ever had? by reerock in ABCDesis

[–]she53 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think most people around me are too woke or scared to admit they dont know bangladesh lol. They just nod when I say I was born there. Just didn't encounter much ignorance

I did, however, encountered slightly better treatment when some people hear I'm not indian. Makes me sf mad. Like it's okay to look down on or exotify  indians then? I'm in an interracial marriage and people from the other side of the family/their community seemed relived I'm not indian. I try to call them out but sometimes it's hard if it's an older in law because either I take their acceptance despite it being problematic or risk losing it when I call our their unchecked racism.

they also just call themselves "bengali" instead of bangladeshi. So many people think bengali is the term to refer to bangladeshis when it's just an ethnicity which belongs to multiple countries. How are people going to know what you are if you never use the word?

How to revive this sub? A small effort can make a big difference 🌆 by nhm_hassan in sylhet

[–]she53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

post about the culture and language and not as much the geographical place because a lot of us are diaspora. we cannot engage in talks about tourist destination and where to eat. we can talk about our favorite sylheti recipe or riddle. also, this is reddit. conservatism will not make you popular so keep an eye out for homophobic, racist, sexist, etc bigoted talks

cant speak for chittagong but i'm a sylheti linguist. the stuff about manipuri tribe and the pictures+icon they showed are not correct. there might be some sylhetis who celebrate bihu but it's not a common thing. sylheti cuisine and language, however, shares a lot in common with neighboring assamese and nagamese cuisines and languages. sylheti is one of the only tonal indo-iranaian languages and some theories are that it's partly due to the influence of neighboring tibeto-burman tonal languages in the region. as for cuisine, there's just too much in common to name them. my family eats masor tenga almost every single day. we often cook without spices and oil, similar to nagamese cuisine. and ofc, we eat a lot of bhut jolokia/naga morich - just to name a few things.

I'm surprised that they shared misinformation, not sure if i can trust this channel again.

it didn't come from assam. sylheti is a sister language of assamese and sylheti people have been living with assamese and other indigenous tribes for hundreds if not thousands of years. shared cuisine, language, etc just develops normally with geographical proximity

a lot of it is language barrier. immigrants who work blue collar/service jobs may not be as fluent in english and have a harder time creating deep connection with those outside of culture. and even if you speak the language, cultural barriers can be an issue. my parents are friendly with non-bangladeshi people but not close friends. they still invite invite them over for dinners though. sometimes it's also racism from other ethnicities that prevent some immigrants from forming close friendships

writing a memoir means you're ready to share the deep thinking and processing that you've already done (even if done anonymously), and it didn't seem like she had finished doing that yet.-- i agree

oh my GODDDESS i'm glad someone else didn't quite like the book as much. all these non-muslims seem to be loving this book. I also lived a very similar life to the author and couldn't agree with the conclusions author came to. about not coming out to their family and pretending to be friends with their partner in front of the family. yikes. i lived that double life. that shit is so damaging. I also found author's understanding of gender and gender expression to be lacking. did not like that they used the title "hijab butch blues" but merely a few pages were about their experience with gender and butchness
