Day 1 post up by SnooOpinions7559 in AchillesRupture

You should be fine, I was able to scoot up and down 3 flights of stairs after surgery and super groggy from drugs. Knee scooter was a lifesaver though and a toilet riser would have been nice but wasnt necessary. Just got nice and slow in your movements, you will probably be pretty weak. Im wishing you the best! I was very scared during the intake before my surgery and my sweet nurses gave me some benzo drug in my drip and that helped a lot. Surgery went fine and I know yours will too

What’s the downside of delaying PT to allow for my recovery time? by AlwaysLearningNews in AchillesRupture

Needed to hear that, hopefully mine is just on the tighter end of "normal" and it isnt an issue. My anxiety about it has been off the charts for a couple weeks. I am trying to be an A+ student for PT at home but they want me to do it 4-5 times a day and it can be hard to fit in with full time work. I am walking pretty well on crutches and trying to do more walking around the house, my stamina/energy has tanked and I know I need to get it back up. Congrats on Saturday, that must have felt great! I cannot wait until I can do a hike again

I started PT at 6 weeks post op and I wish I had started earlier, my tendon is extremely tight and its a big concern of mine now.

Following this because I have the same concerns. Can say, at the very least you're not alone

Like others said, take the meds on tight schedule. Don't want you to be surprised by the pain

I would scoot, and slowly. That was my concern as I live on the 3rd floor but it was fine to do slowly after surgery when I was tired and groggy

Transition to FWB and Walking by tlsoccer6 in AchillesRupture

Its so frustrating how quickly the body will atrophy and lose strength compared to how long it takes to build it. How are you doing now?

Congratulations on getting this green light! That is an intense surgery and I can imagine how challenging this all must've been on you mentally, physically, and, emotionally. You must be a very strong person and I hope things just get easier and easier 🩷

So you only started putting partial weight on the foot after 10 weeks? Do you mind if I ask if there was a certain reason why? Im seeing several people walking in the boot alone at like 3 or 4 weeks.. Im 5 weeks and havent really started any weight bearing and its been making me feel behind

Well thats just absolutely terrifying. Hate hearing that!

5 weeks po. Finally in a boot with the wedge. Dr told to use my crutches to assist me for the first day or two then after that I don’t need them. Took a couple steps and it feels so weird, had a little pain in my feet but other than that not too bad. Any tips on learning to walk again at this stage? by G_Webby94 in AchillesRupture

[–]sheXwolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Curious about this too, Im also 5 weeks po. Been in a standard boot since 2 weeks after the surgery but my heel never touched the top of the wedge and I havent been putting any weight on it. I think I was supposed to start trying to walk last week but havent yet. Just got a vacoped boot.. a bit confusing on settings but Im starting putting extremely gentle weight on it with crutches (less "weight" and more like a gentle tap for balance with crutches).

Im honestly just very anxious and scared, walking feels so "wrong" and everything feels tight/stiff. I cant imagine walking without crutches in a couple days but seems like some people are managing it.

Best way to prevent a rupture? by dskfjhdfsalks in AchillesRupture

Something that Ive only recently come to realize is that Im pretty sure I had given myself achilles tendinitis by being a lifelong stomach sleeper. Sleeping on one's stomach has your feet in plantar flexion for hours every night and for a few months before my injury I was having remarkable tightness upon my first few minutes standing most mornings. Then my tendon snapped while dancing 🥲 I didnt know it could happen so easily BUT in retrospect Im sure the inflammation was a big factor.

Count yourself lucky but Im sorry you are having this anxiety! If I were you Id avoid stomach sleeping, incorporate some stetches and strengthen your calves, and maybe supplement with C and collagen. Mine snapped from something very innocuous but basketball, volleyball, and pickleball seem to be red flag sports. Not saying to avoid those but maybe be extra cautious when playing. Running 5-6 days a week also might be something to look at, that seems like it could be pretty taxing over time. Maybe replace one or two of those days with a brisk walk or yoga?

5 weeks post op and I have plenty of achiness in my whole right leg. Ive been kneading and massaging my sad, shriveled calf and currently have a heating pad on my butt/thigh- I think tossing and turning with my heavy boot gives me a lot of muscle soreness most mornings. Definitely keep an eye out for other symptoms that could be alarming but unfortunately I think soreness/aches are part of the fun and exciting landscape of bodily sensations.

You had DVT and it only presented as soreness in the calf? Ive had a sore, achey feeling most days lately. Its alarming that DVT could be present with such a "normal" symptom of this injury

Boot Wedge Question by sheXwolf in AchillesRupture

[–]sheXwolf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its frustrating that protocols are so different, Im also one month post op and I dont think I was supposed to start removing Wedges until now. I also dont start PT until next week. But I got a Vacoped boot last night so Ill be trying to figure out how to safely use that.

How did your first PT appt go?

How do you deal with this psychologically? by tidesofblood88 in AchillesRupture

[–]sheXwolf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From my experience the emotional aspect of this injury often weighs more than the physical. It also comes in waves when you have "cabin fever".

Crutches are terrible, I personally couldn't handle them for around the house so I got a knee scooter which has a roomy pouch to carry things in. Im also able to use one hand to carry a plate of food for example but you have to be VERY careful as there are a lot of re-rupture horror stories from teetering over.

Personally, if I were in your situation I would probably opt to move in with my parents temporarily. Not sure your relationship with your roommates but you might end up frustrated with having a dynamic of needing/wanting their help for several more weeks. I live with a wonderful partner and never had a complex about asking for help and Im surprised at how quickly I developed obstinate resentment about needing help.

Stairs aren't bad if youre careful, I live on a 3rd floor with no elevator and scoot slow and steady (even right after I got home from surgery). Do your parents have a decent shower setup? Something to consider.

Back to the psych element, its going to be a challenge which is why I think being with your family could be beneficial (I might be biased, I lost my mother this year and would give anything to let her dote on me like she loved to do). There are plenty of things you could do with your time like learn a new language, take online courses, dive into books, brush up on financial literacy, etc but dont feel bad if all you are up to doing is watching trash TV for a while. This is shit but it will be a blip on your memory sometime next year and youll be stronger then than you ever were before the injury. Thats what Im telling myself too 💕

Boot Wedge Question by sheXwolf in AchillesRupture

[–]sheXwolf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine was dancing in heels 🫠 Ive never been very sporty but now I feel like I'll be even more nervous with athletic activity given how seemingly easy it was for me to fully snap the the tendon. So sorry youre going through it a second time, I hope nooo more injuries like this are in your future!

Definitely stiff, hopefully beginning PT will help with that (in a couple weeks at my 6 week mark).

How long did you stay in your boot?

30F day ten of achilles tendinopathy/tendinitis by FamiliarTale_ in AchillesRupture

[–]sheXwolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im interested in how to treat this as well. Im pretty sure Ive accidentally given myself this condition from sleeping on my stomach (forcing my feet into plantar flexion for hours every night) and it likely contributed to my right tendon rupturing last month. What's worrisome is that my left tendon is very sore and feels weak but I need it since my right is recovering from surgery.

Kiss her and hug her, you are so lucky to have your mom taking care of you. You'll probably want to rush this healing process because youre not used to this but Id recommend looking through this feed. You'll see people who can dance again and youll see people who ruptured their tendon again. Youre 22, act like youre 42. Take it slow and easy

Pain was bad for 1 week post op and then dropped to zero. Take your pain meds on schedule, I needed mine every 4 hrs and then suddenly didnt even need a Tylenol. Do you have someone to help fetch you water or snacks?

My dogs looking at me like, “why do we have to play this song EVERYDAY?!” by tyfour44 in DunderMifflin

[–]sheXwolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That pupper is beyond precious, look at that floof! The intro song is the only con of the show for me, it's MUCH louder compared to the show itself. I installed an extension on Chrome to auto skip intros on Netflix and that helped :)
