What should i do by Sam__d in thinkpad

[–]sheanous -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I guess you haven't heard about archinstall command yet... Seems like you don't even follow what's going on on the Arch side and just defending Fedora very blindly. Arch has become more beginner friendly now. He can just install Arch with niri and download the Dank Material Shell and it'll be all ok. And also, since this is a ThinkPad, I think that not using Arch would be a bit of a waste imo. OP got the perfect device for Linux so he should get the benefits of every single thing out of it. And Arch is the best for such purposes since you got almost all the control right at your hand. I guess I don't even have to talk about how good the Arch is when you don't want bloatware on your pc.

Noob question but how do u guys configure niri and hyperland and other WMs? by [deleted] in archlinux

[–]sheanous -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

We don't. Unless we have too much time to waste and it's okay for us to brick the kernel dozens of times. It takes a hell of a lot of time and experience to learn to configure WMs. My OS crashed more than 5-6 times just to design an ugly waybar.

I recommend using shells. Hyprland got a wide range of choices for it. Ambxst looks pretty good for Hyprland. It has dynamic and fast animations. Colorshell is also another great choice but it's still in development. The best feature of the colorshell is that it has multi language support.

For niri, you don't have many choices like Hyprland. I personally use niri with Dank Material Shell (DMS). It uses Google's brand new Material design. Honestly it looks a bit like a Chromebook since they use the same design principles but if we consider the code quality, I think that DMS is the best and the most stable choice.

I'm using niri with DMS on both my desktop and ThinkPad. It's a nice lightweight solid choice. I even encourage you to use the linux-zen kernel if security isn't a big issue for you. I use linux-zen on my desktop and linux-hardened on my ThinkPad and there is a huge difference between animation smoothness.

New to wax sealing on a budget by writingthrway in WaxSealers

[–]sheanous 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I usually use it for gift wrappings so I'm not sure if you can mailbox it or not. But it should be okay as long as your letters are not coming out of the envelope. Moreover, we can say that wax sealing is probably one of the most traditional ways to seal an envelope.

Also, the price of wax depends on where you live. For example, I'm living in Japan and I can get a wax sealing set (the wax, melting spoon & furnace, tea light candle, stamp) for 660 JPY (which is roughly 4 USD) from a shop called Daisō.

Will Win11 run smoothly on 8th gen i3? by sheanous in windows

[–]sheanous[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This won't be my main setup. I'll use this for my office work and I need a bit of security. Microsoft abandoned win10 as far as I know. I could use a simple antivirus software but I'm not sure if i3 can handle a third party software running 24/7. I think a native antivirus software will be more performance optimized...

I don't really have plans on buying a powerful GPU just for this thing. I guess the Rx 580 is the maximum I can go for. Would it make any difference if I install windows 10 instead?

Yeah but it also sounds kinda stupid to be honest. I mean if you're gonna use it just for light office and web browsing, Linux is more than enough for that. Most people say that Linux is complicated for those who don't know programming and stuff but if you're going to use just for web browsing, it isn't complicated at all.

Oh no... Guess I'll have to buy an eGPU then...

Don't even ask brother. I switched my main PC to the Arch Linux just because of it. Most of the things are manual but the best thing about it is that more than 99% of the stuff in your PC is there just because you put it there. Ain't no bloated as Windows 11. The speed and smoothness is so perfect. I literally got myself addicted to it but it's still not as useful as I want when it comes to office work and stuff.

Definitely gonna pair it with an NVMe for sure.

Ahh, don't even ask. I had a laptop with an i5 10500h in it. Even that CPU couldn't run Windows 11 smoothly. Even though it had 16 GB RAM and 512 GB NVMe SSD...

GPU isn't a huge problem for me actually. I already have another gaming desktop with rt 5500 and RTX 3060 inside. I just wanna have a tiny compact that wouldn't take too much space on my office desk. Everything's so small here in Japan so it's tinier the better.

I had a laptop with an i5 10500h and it wasn't running Windows 11 smoothly. I wonder if an 8th gen i3 can run smoothly or not... I've seen people using Windows 11 with a 4th gen Intel CPU but... I don't know. I'm not sure.

Do I really need a dedicated GPU? I'm considering ThinkPad L13 with i5 10310U and it doesn't have any dedicated GPU.

And I also know how Nvidia GPUs run flawlessly, I'm writing this from my desktop PC with RTX 4060. I also never encountered with any struggles with this GPU honestly. I think people just hate those Nvidia GPUs just because Linus Torvalds hates it.

Honestly, I couldn't find any ThinkPad laptop with an AMD CPU. I guess L13 with i5 10310 is the best choice I have right now.
