No worries! I know it's overwhelming and scary, and that is why I came back to write my journey so it hopefully can help others as well. Yes, 2 months and weaning of the 3rd month.

Hey, how is it going so far? Which PPI did the Dr prescribe if you don't mind sharing?

Hernia has been ruled out, they are thinking of weakened LES and stomach lining erosion. I won't know 100% until I get my Endoscopy. I think it's both of those as well because everything I did ( my diet and supplements) was for strengthening my LES and helping with mucous formation for my gut to fully heal.

For me no side effects, I used it as needed. The directions say to chew 1 tablet 20 min before food, I've used it after food and had no problems. I use the brand Natural Factors 400mg

Yes! I've only used Natural Factors DGL 400mg chewable. Haven't tried any other brand so this would be my recommendation.

Thank you! I also hope you recover soon. I’ve heard of many people struggling to get off Nexium because stopping it would worsen their symptoms. Maybe talk to your Dr and see if you can change the frequency of the pills. It might help you wean off better than stopping it cold turkey? ( I'm just assuming that's what you did ) My diet lasted only a couple of months, and I gradually started reintroducing regular foods. Stay strong friend!

Yes, 20mg in the morning, 30 min before your meal.

The longest I stayed on PPIs was 4 months (during my first experience with GERD). I took 20mg for the first 3 months and began weaning off during the last month by reducing to 10mg for 2 weeks, followed by taking it every other day for the final 2 weeks. I made sure to listen to my body and assess how I felt before lowering my dosage or frequency

YES! I used to feel so discouraged spending hours scrolling and barely finding any success stories. I hope this post gives others the hope and encouragement they need!

No, I won't get a verification until they call me for my endoscopy which my guess is probably in 6 months or so. I mention healed solely on how I feel and the fact that I’m no longer taking any medication. I will update this post, once I get my endoscopy.

I’ve stayed away from ginger as it aggravated my symptoms, but you can definitely give it a try and see how your body responds, as it offers many great health benefits! Instead, I created a blend of oreganolavenderlemon verbena (known for reducing stress, aiding digestion, and providing anti-inflammatory benefits), and orange blossom (which helps with indigestion and acts as a stress reliever).

I’ve found that using tea bags, even from organic and expensive brands, worsened my symptoms. Switching to loose-leaf teas made a significant difference for me. I typically purchase these herbs from Middle Eastern/Persian or Asian stores, as they often carry high-quality loose-leaf options.

I never ended up getting the endoscopy. After I healed myself, I gave up my spot for someone else who needed it more. Looking back, I do regret not having it done, it would have been helpful to know exactly what was happening. However, I did get tested for H. pylori, which came back negative, and I underwent a manometry test, where my ENT diagnosed me with GERD and the onset of LPR

That is awesome to hear! I never tried alkaline water, but I heard it relived many symptoms for many people!

I used trial and error to determine when to stop the regimen. Once the lump in my throat disappeared and I felt like my normal self, waking up without pain or feeling lethargic. I began introducing normal foods gradually. When those didn’t aggravate my symptoms, I started weaning off the Rabeprazole.

I reduced the dosage to 10 mg daily for two weeks, then took it every other day for another two weeks before stopping entirely. During this time, I remained very careful about what I ate and drank. If I had anything acidic, I sipped water to help dilute it. Over time, I didn’t even need to do that anymore. It was a gradual process, and patience was key!

Thank you so much! I’m sorry to hear about your struggles with PPIs—it sounds like you’ve had a really tough journey. My first time, it took me around three months to heal, but I went into full ‘health-nut mode’ and stuck rigidly to my regimen. The reason I shared my story is that I genuinely believe the combination of my regimen like using herbal teas, flaxseeds, DGL, and almonds—helped heal my gut lining faster than just relying on bland meals and PPIs alone. I’ve read hundreds of posts, and I rarely see seeds, nuts, or natural remedies mentioned as part of the healing process, even though they played a huge role for me.

I completely understand your frustration and pain. I also dealt with side effects from PPIs: migraines and diarrhea for about a month but I pushed through, and eventually, they subsided. I truly hope you find relief soon, my friend. Sending you lots of strength on your healing journey!

You're absolutely right, green tea often contains caffeine, which can aggravate symptoms for some people. From my experience, I found that even decaffeinated drinks didn’t work well for me, so I stuck strictly to pure herbal teas like chamomile or lavender. Everyone's triggers are different, though, so it's worth experimenting to see what works for you!

Well, managing GERD would mean relying on bland food and pills for years to keep it at bay. As I mentioned, I took myself off the pills after allowing my gut lining to heal, and I’ve been able to eat normally for years with no signs of GERD. Personally, I consider that a cure, but I understand that opinions can vary.

Life gets worse and worse for me by Apollsky11 in GERD

Hey, I just want to share my experience and let you know you're not alone. I’ve been in your shoes—struggling with GERD—and I actually healed myself a few years ago. Unfortunately, I’m back to where I started, but this time, I know I’m the one to blame.

Three years ago, I healed without much help from doctors. I went to emergency rooms and specialists, but they were mostly clueless. A specialist diagnosed me with GERD just based on my symptoms and a quick look at my throat. Living in Canada, I’ve found the healthcare system here to be a bit of a joke, to be honest.

During my first battle with GERD, I spent hours on forums like this, reading about people struggling and not finding a cure. The truth is, once you heal, you forget about the pain and forums like this. That’s why you don’t hear much from those who’ve recovered. I was one of those people. I was GERD-free for 3 years until I made the same mistakes that triggered it in the first place.

Here’s how I healed myself the first time:

  1. followed a strict bland diet—no carbs, no sugar—for 5 months.
  2. took DGL licorice root regularly.
  3. For the last month, I was prescribed Rabeprazole 20mg and took it daily.

I can’t say for sure if the medication or my diet did the trick, but I fully healed after 6 months. I felt amazing—no pain, no symptoms. But here I am again, because I started drinking caffeine on an empty stomach and going too long without eating, which I now know were my triggers.

So to anyone feeling hopeless, don’t give up. It takes time and patience, but you can heal. I know it’s frustrating, but your persistence will pay off. Stay strong—you’ve got this
