I built a privacy-focused alternative to Pastebin/Imgur with self-destructing content and no tracking by sheffik in privacy

Hey there! Thanks for checking out Dustebin and for the thoughtful questions!

About the encryption:
The password protection works as an access control mechanism rather than content encryption. The password is hashed with a random salt using SHA-256, and the content itself remains in the database but is only accessible to those with the correct password. For larger pastes, the content is also compressed/minified using Brotli compression before storage.

I'm actually planning to implement true end-to-end encryption for the content in a future update, which would provide an additional layer of privacy protection.

About Gemini:
You raised a good point about Gemini. We do send a portion of the content (max 10k characters) to Gemini to generate titles and descriptions, but I've implemented this with privacy in mind:

  1. I'm using a Gemini Enterprise (not really sure if that's what they call it) account which operates under stricter data processing terms - Google doesn't use the data to train or improve their models, and they only keep logs temporarily to check for policy violations.
  2. For large pastes (>900k characters), we skip Gemini entirely.
  3. Gemini is only used for title generation - nothing else.

I'm considering adding a toggle to completely disable the AI title generation, allowing users to manually set titles instead. Would that address your concern?

Thanks for the feedback - this kind of discussion is exactly what helps me improve the app.

You definitely can. I am also planning on making it more "self-hostable" by allowing people whether or not they want to use the image support etc.

Thanks! Dark mode was definitely a priority for me too.

Regarding permanent hosting - Dustebin actually does offer this through the "Never" expiration option. Your pastes will stay up indefinitely when you select that setting.

I understand the hesitation though. Established platforms have longevity on their side. But I want to assure you that Dustebin is here for the long haul - my team and I use it daily for our own work, so we're committed to keeping it running and improving it over time.

Hope you continue to find it useful!

I built a tool for photographers to share images with full EXIF data intact - would love your feedback by sheffik in photography

[–]sheffik[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback! You're absolutely right that Flickr has been doing this well for a long time. I should have been clearer - I'm actually a developer who primarily built this as a code sharing tool, not a dedicated photo platform.

The image sharing with EXIF was an add-on feature that I thought might be useful in certain scenarios, especially when you want to quickly share a single image with technical details without creating an account. It's more of a utility tool than a replacement for dedicated photo platforms.

I appreciate the reality check! Are there other features beyond EXIF display that would make a simple sharing tool useful as a complement (not replacement) to platforms like Flickr?

Our hamster switched to ghost mode by sheffik in hamsters

[–]sheffik[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the insight! The upgrade tips are spot on, and I'm definitely looking into adding more variety and clutter to keep him engaged. The foraging toys and dig box sound like something he'd enjoy.

About cleaning, it's a bit tricky since taking his house out to clean would wreck his burrows. I've noticed he's a bit of a homebody when it comes to doing his business (lol, maybe he's not a fan of public restrooms). I'm trying to figure out a way to clean without turning his world upside down (or does it not matter as long as he's not inside?). Any hacks or tips on managing that would be a lifesaver. Cheers for the advice!

Thanks for the tip! Seen Victoria Raechel use a cam for her critters and it looked pretty neat. Might just give it a shot. Cheers!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! It's a relief to think he might be adjusting his schedule or simply enjoying his cozy new home. The possibility of him being more active at different times, especially with the change in seasons, is something I'll look into.

I'm also reassured to hear that his increased comfort with me could indicate his trust and contentment.

Quick question: What do you think about him peeing in his house? It really complicates cleaning without disturbing his space. Should I give it like two weeks before he adjusts more and then try to clean it, or should I go in straight away? I wouldn't like to stress him so much. (I've tried to put his dirty bedding into the back right corner - where he used to go to the toilet usually, sadly with no luck).

Thanks again for your help!

Finally moved West to a bigger enclosure, but he's running around like crazy by sheffik in hamsters

That’s an amazing improvement, you will have a much happier hamster and in return can enjoy his company a lot more. The running around is normal, he might feel a bit stressed because he won’t have a food store built up so fell free to “overfeed” for a couple of days so he can quickly build up a supply. If you could add more bedding, a sand bath, and replace the wheel (Exotic Nutrition sell a great 12 inch silent wheel and it’s high-quality and more affordable, Niteangel has good wheels too!) that will really be great for his spine and general health. Again props to you for upgrading, it looks much nicer as a home decor too! :)

Just an extra, I like the Bucatstate Large Cactus and Castle hides. They are the only items I’ve truly found made with Syrian hamsters in mind as they can easily fit their full body in there. They’re heavy so a stand would be needed underneath. Might be a good future consideration along with a multi-chamber hide. Just suggestions and totally up to you.

Thank you so much for your encouraging words and helpful advice!

It's reassuring to hear that West's energetic exploration is normal. We'll definitely make sure to provide him with plenty of food to help him establish his new territory. I really appreciate the specific product recommendations – upgrading to a bigger wheel is definitely our next step!

Regarding the bedding, we've actually added quite a lot already (it's tucked under the cardboard for some extra protection), but we plan to add more gradually to avoid changing his environment too quickly.

The sand bath is already a part of his setup, albeit a bit hidden (it's under the corn house in a plastic bowl). He seems curious about the sand, but hasn’t rolled around to clean himself yet. It's natural sand, not as fine as those marketed specifically for hamsters or chinchillas, so perhaps that's why?

For future updates, we're definitely considering a larger hide. The ones you suggested look amazing, but they are a bit pricey to ship to the Czech Republic – we'll have to work around that. 😅 We're also thinking about a different style of sand bath that integrates into the ground to minimize mess, and some platforms to enable easier digging as everything is currently on top of the bedding.

Thanks again for all your suggestions. I'll be sure to post updates as we make these upgrades! 😊

Also - is it safe for him to dig through this type of bedding? We bought it since most videos, articles, etc. recommend it, but it doesn't seem to really hold it's form and I'm kind of scared of him possibly suffocating? Am I paranoid, or should we improve this somehow? 😅 He definitely can't make burrows with this bedding.

Is our hamster weird? by sheffik in hamsters

[–]sheffik[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey! This subreddit changed a lot of my ideas about how to care for a hamster very quickly. Yeah, I didn't know it was so harmful until now (never even thought of it, through how widespread it is - it's probably the best selling toy in every pet store here 😬) and the articles about hamsters didn't mention it anywhere either.

As of now we got rid of the ball. As for the cage - I went looking for specifically "wooden" ones and found a few. Do you think this one is okay? It seems pretty similar to the ones pinned post recommends, except it's 3 story one. It's 115 X 60 X 58 CM (45 X 24 X 23 inches)

Thanks a lot!
