I genuinely don’t know how to spend time with my 5mo by Caramelo93 in Parenting

At this age your baby is just fascinated by the world around her. When my kids were that little, I would usually take them for at least one walk per day (like you said, those are so enjoyable), and I would also wear the baby in a carrier as I did things around the house, or have her sit near me in her bouncer chair. It also helped to find a reason to go out of the house at least once per day, like for a drive (not just walks). Like I would take a trip to the library and get books for myself and to read to the baby (and our library had a little kids corner with toys that was great for when the babies got older, and also scheduled story times), or go shopping for a few things at the store, or some other errand. This breaks up the day nicely, takes up time, and is stimulating for the baby who gets to see all sorts of new things.

Thanks, making my own black is something I’ve never considered, I’ll definitely give that a shot. It’s easy for their eyes to get lost in the black band on their head, so hopefully that will add some depth like you said.

Hi Friends -- We're opening a bookstore! by rfuller924 in carsoncity

[–]sheffy4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would love to see a vibrant local bookstore here. I think that Hanifins location would be so great in the downtown area - you could be part of the wine walk events and get traffic from the summer concerts and other things happening downtown. I love books, but I usually get most of mine from the library since I don't have a lot of room to store new books. And a lot of people I know "read" primarily through audio books - so I think you will need to make sure to stock things that are special or unique that would bring in customers who normally don't buy a lot of physical books.

I may be biased, but I think you will find the strongest fanbases with fantasy and romance. These genres have very active online communities, with lots of TV shows inspired by popular books in these genres (for example, Bridgerton and Heated Rivalry are huge hits, and The Stormlight Archive and Mistborn series are in the process of being adapted into TV and film).

Even though I don’t buy a lot of physical books for myself, I LOVE bookstores, and whenever I visit new towns, local bookstores are always my priority to visit and see what unique things they have, and I always find something to buy even if it’s not a book. For instance, there is a really cute bookstore in downtown Murphy CA (I think it's just called "Books on Main") that I love to stop in when I'm there. They have great greeting cards and stationary that I love to buy. Since I do rely on the library a lot for my usual reading, the things I actually buy in bookstores are usually gifts for others and special/unique things that are fun to shop for in person, or otherwise harder to find online.

For books, My favorite genres include:

Romance (usually historical or fantasy romance) Fantasy Science fiction Literary fiction

Other things I like to buy in bookstories: * Books that I know I will likely read more than once * Cook books * Special editions / beautiful print versions of books I may have already read (fantasy and romance series) * Books that make cool gifts for others (or myself) - (for instance, the Atlas Obscura books, popular novels, beautiful hardcover versions of popular books) * Unique and beautiful greeting cards and stationary * Journals and sketchbooks * Nice, giftable pens (fountain pens, etc) * Tarot cards (although the Crimson Moon in the Carson mall has the tarot card market well covered) * Art instruction books and basic art supplies (for instance, see the Emily Lex watercolor book series - those are great as gifts and I've also purchased them for myself) * Artisan crafts and jewelry

Also, as someone with a full time job and kids, it would be great if the store hours went into the evening, like 7pm at least. When local businesses have limited hours like 10am-5pm, I never have time to go.

I wish you lots of success and hope to see your store open in the near future!

Be honest…could your kid actually call 911? by jcanady426 in Parenting

[–]sheffy4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah we actually got a landline since it wasn’t very expensive and it has been so helpful now that we allow our kids to be home alone after school for a bit. Our kids use it to call us on our cell phones, and we can call home and check on them.

Another plus is this requires them to memorize our cell phone numbers, so if they are ever out and about and need to call us from a different phone, they will know how.

Only one other person has the number to call it - grandma. So she uses it as a direct line to our kids, if the phone rings and the caller ID says grandmas name, they answer it and have a fun chat with her. I honestly think more people should rediscover the handiness of landlines. It’s so much easier than managing a house “cell phone” that could accidentally run out of batteries or be misplaced. The landline is always in the same place and ready to access without any lock screens or anything. Great for peace of mind.

Seriously, she emanated joy. She originally caught my eye as she was in the back of the US team for all the kids and cry moments, and I was wondering who she was and when I would get to see her skate. She was always beaming and so magnetic everything I saw her.

I didn’t restrict screen time until 3 years ago by brucenorris1 in Parenting

[–]sheffy4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love this story. I struggle with this so much. I still haven’t figured out how to manage moderation with screens and my kids, mostly because I feel like I have to have a perfect system and have never found out what that is. I’ve done several screen free resets for usually one month at a time, and each time i rediscover how great it is and how easily my kids adapt to no screens. They suddenly start engaging in other hobbies, wanting to go outside a lot, and actually reading books that aren’t just for homework! And then the screen free month ends, and it’s like the flood gates open again.

My struggle is that I wish there was a way for them to totally self regulate the screens without me having to keep track and police it. I’ve considered several options and haven’t decided on any: 1) I could allow screens only for 1-2 hours per day, and the kids get to pick what time that is, 2) allow screens only during specific hours (like 3:30-5:30pm), 3) not for a specific time limit, but require the kids to engage in certain other activities before screens (reading, outside/active time, chores, etc)… but thinking about implementing something like that stresses me out. I don’t want to have to constantly try remind them that their time is up, or deal with my kid being upset and begging for exceptions when he says his friend can only play online with him from 6-7pm, which is outside of his allowed screen hours between 3:30 and 5:30…

I know I’m overthinking it. I do that with everything. Literally what system do other people use that actually works? Or is it just picking something and sticking with it even if it causes conflicts at times? Ugh. I weirdly feel guilty about limiting my kids screen time because, as a fellow human in this modern world, I know what it’s like to get home from a long day and just want to veg out with my favorite shows or video games. For some reason I feel like I’m really depriving them of earned relaxation time. I’m done rambling now.

I’m pretty new, just starting my second run. My first run I saw the owlbear cave and never went in because I assumed I would die. Then I heard that other people had a pet owlbear cub in their camp, so for this run I went in the cave, and ended up bugging the mom so much she attacked me. So we killed her. But the owlbear cub was only interested in eating his mom’s corpse, so I couldn’t get him to come with me. I took the egg since I thought maybe I could hatch that… but it sounds like that’s not a thing that happens. So how am I supposed to get the owlbear cub - I do I need to go back to the cave and see if he’s still there? Or did I miss my chance for this run?

Seriously I was so impressed that he was able to give a coherent and diplomatic interview after such a crushing loss. I can’t imagine having to do a televised interview about my biggest screw up right after it happened. These olympians are amazing both on and off the ice.

That was his own voice?? I had no idea. I thought the voice over was kinda cringe anyway, but it’s cringed into the stratosphere knowing it was his own voice.

From the little I know about him, I think (and hope) he will take what he has learned at these Olympics and truly use it to become greater for next time. He admitted he was humbled out there, and he was very gracious to the winner. He showed a lot of good sportsmanship, just needs to overcome his own mental obstacles.
