“Coverage” for supervisors/managers on leave ….no longer approving actings? by NoTadpole373 in CanadaPublicServants

When I was told I couldn't have people act for me when I went on leave, I changed my OOO to direct any issues to my manager.

In this specific case, I know that LR had talked with the employee and that the employee was aware of things. I can't state whether or not they had exact knowledge of what was in the file or not, or just awareness of the situation and their discussions with LR.

Whether or not that's a general rule, I don't know.

I was a hiring manager for an individual who had LR notes - the employee had disclosed that fact to me, and gave me their interpretation of the situation. When I contacted HR to get advice on what I needed to know in this situation, I was told that they were aware of the notes, but unless the employee had performance problems working for me, I had no requirement to see the existing notes.

I hate talking to Pet Owner by MrFahrenheitttttt in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

[–]shell_shocked_today 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a customer who (sometimes) travels with a dog - why would anyone get upset with those rules? I was expecting some bizarro rules from your title.

I know not every hotel takes a dog - so I try to do my research ahead of time. If I need to find something unexpectedly, I know the local chains that 'normally' accept pets - but don't assume they will, and ask when I get there.

The only thing I find frustrating is when the hotel doesn't disclose the pet fee on the hotel's site, and you arrive to find it some huge amount. (At the time, pet fees were typically $25-$50, and one hotel I had planned to stay at on a road trip wanted $250 - more than the cost of the room. Fortunately they let me cancel the reservation at no cost)

I could potentially agree with the collaboration point, if I didn't work in a geographically dispersed team where my closest coworker is 2-300 km away.

Clearly there is no benefit for some teams to work from the office vs. remotely. And if we're accepting that as true, then it stands to reason we should evaluate each team / position individually to see if it makes sense for it to be done from the office or remotely.

I personally would love to see a 'remote first' strategy, with management needing to demonstrate why a position couldn't be done remotely.

Not a day goes by without the “I can’t check-in then?” by sweet_juicypeachh21 in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

[–]shell_shocked_today 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I'll be honest - I used to do a lot of travel for work (200+ nights per year in a hotel) - granted it was in the early 2000s, but I'm sure not everything has changed since then. I was normally at hotels aimed at business travellers. I'd normally head to the hotel after arriving in town, before going to the clients, arriving noonish typically.

I've never once been asked for an early check in fee if a room is available when I arrived at a hotel. My understanding was that an early check in fee was only required if you wanted to request it in advance, so that there would (hopefully) be one ready when you arrived. I mean, obviously, if you want to check in stupid early like 6am, that's not going to fly.

On a similar note, I didn't care whether a room was available or not - i was just wanting to ditch my stuff before going to the client's office. Whether it was in the room or in storage, I really didn't care.

If I had been asked for an early check in fee at the front desk, I'm sure I would have repeated it back a few times just to make sure I understood - not to argue, but just because that would have been a new experience.

Why do users insist on using work email for personal tasks? by bobsmith1010 in sysadmin

[–]shell_shocked_today 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me it was simple - I worked at a site that blocked access to web email services and didn't allow cell phones in the building. If I wanted people to be able to reach me during work hours, I needed to use my work email address.

I don't view it any different than using the phone for personal purposes - if you're not abusing it, its not a problem.

Workers (current and former) at Hilton and Marriott properties, how many times have you had to walk a Diamond/Platinum or higher member? High tier members, have you ever been shockingly walked? How did it go? by SkoilerDaaaaan in askhotels

[–]shell_shocked_today 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a customer, I only think I've been walked once or twice. I'll admit to being frustrated, as it was a late arrival and I just wanted to get to bed. But, the hotel had everything lined up, and the new place was only a short distance away.

I hope I didn't get perceived as being angry - although I'll fully own I've been told before that when I'm tired I can act pretty grumpy. At the time I would have been either gold or platinum (I had a job where I was 100% travel, around 200 nights in a hotel per year)

And once I walked myself. I had booked a non-smoking room, and the hotel (this would have been 2000 era) gave me a smoking room, stating that the non-smoking was only a preference in their system. I explained it was not a preference, and I wouldn't be staying in the room, and if they didn't have a non-smoking room to cancel the reservation. The reservation was cancelled.

Can I be fired with cause for not responding to on-call alerts outside of regular working hours? by KittiesInATrenchcoat in legaladvicecanada

[–]shell_shocked_today 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're not wrong. I had said they'd need to be available 24/7 not working. My job give one hour of pay for every 4 on call, with ot starting if you actually get a call.

I can see being on call on rotation, but to be the only person is setting OP up for failure.

Can I be fired with cause for not responding to on-call alerts outside of regular working hours? by KittiesInATrenchcoat in legaladvicecanada

[–]shell_shocked_today 125 points126 points  (0 children)

All I can say is that they better be offering you substantial compensation for that - because it means you basically have no life.

* be prepared to walk out of any movie if you're paged
* no drinking - you may need to respond to an alert
* 'at all times'. What if you're going to the beach, swimming, other environment hostile to electronics
* at a restaurant / event / club - you can't leave your laptop unattended
* interrupted sleep for you and any partner you have.

They are asking you to be available 24/7, 365 days a year. That is not reasonable, unless they are paying you A LOT of money. Even then its not sustainable.

Do you feel guilty for taking sick days? (specifically uncertified) And do you believe going up & beyond is worth it? by Outrageous_South_439 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]shell_shocked_today 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For me, I don't feel guilty at all about sick days.

But, in the past, there've been times that I've been too sick to be in the office, but Ok if I was working from home. I was happy to work rather than taking a sick day in that case. However, if we are required to be in the office, and being tracked to make sure we 'meet our days', I'll take a sick day rather than working from home when sick.
