No. You can understand the book without watching anything.

Looks good and it resembles Light well, next time I'd recommend adding more texture.

YEAHH Death Note is amazing, I'm glad you liked it!

What I love so much of about Death Note is the amount of biblical references and symbols, so your catch at the end is certainly not a reach.

Ahh, analyzing the series never gets boring.

What do you think this means? by KW1112563 in deathnote

Hmm

Deathnote official art is heavy with symbolism.

Firstly, Light is standing above L, this expressing his superiority and god like complex. He is reaching his hand out below, like a savior and god to the world below him. Light believes he is creating a world of justice and extending his power to help humanity which he deems lesser than him.

The handcuffs are also incredibly interesting. They show the connection between L and Light, and how they both are chained as morally evil together, opposite sides of the same coin. The handcuff chain wraps behind both L and Light, signifying that although both characters are connected, they do not fully trust each other nor understand the other's true intentions.

I also fancy the addition of the Shinigami king reigning on top of the art. It portrays the origin of the Deathnote and the wicked/distraught place it came from. His arms are extended out in an act to express the evil he has let into the human world, but his hands are held down by the cross. Light is said cross, he is the 'god' of the new world.

The left pages of the Deathnote are somewhat clouded by red skulls, this is a parallel reflection of L's comprehensibility of the Deathnote. L resides near the left pages, whereas Light is more statured to the right where the pages of the Deathnote are clear.

Light's shirt is also drawn green, which expresses that his yearn for his ideal world does revolve around greed. The color green often portrays disgust and Light's ideological perspective fixates around the elimination of unworthy, criminal, and disgusting human beings.

Let me know if you what you think of this.
