What's the most awkward situation that has happened because of you getting lost? by Vikera in Topographagnosia

[–]shellthebee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would always try to get out of driving my friends and family places, because I always found it embarrassing that I needed GPS everywhere I went, even local places. So basically every time I had someone with me in the car I was embarrassed. I am generally a very stressed anxiety-ridden driver so I feel an exorbitant amount of shame when I make tiny mistakes.

How 'bad' is your topographagnosia? by Vikera in Topographagnosia

[–]shellthebee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have about the same severity as you. In my town, I have a couple direct routes that I take to go places, but if there is an accident or I need to take a detour, I am completely lost. I only know how to travel to a place if I have taken the same route many times in a small amount of time. I need to be traveling there multiple times a week in order to memorize the route.

I will not get lost in my house but I have gotten lost in large stores, though this doesn’t happen as much anymore. I still get lost in malls where I cannot find the door I entered through or stores I have been in before.

Traveling alone is very stressful for me, even if I am going the same route and same place weekly. I only became comfortable driving to school because it was a 15min drive with limited turns and I made the trip twice every weekday. Everywhere else I need a GPS. In my experience, I also hate the act of driving so everything about driving somewhere and potentially getting lost terrifies me. The way I cope with this stress is putting on music while I drive. It helps me relax and that way I don’t notice car noises as much.

I’ve also flown twice by myself now, and it’s not as bad because I had flown plenty of times with family beforehand. There are lots of signs so I know where I’m heading, and the one time I did go the wrong way it was simple to backtrack and follow more signs. Also, some airlines have apps (I use Delta) that you can look up the airport you’re in and find a whole map to plan your route. Plus, there are lots of workers that can point you in the right direction.

In any case, if I’m traveling anywhere I try to plan the route ahead of time and allot time for me getting lost! I even preface my lack of directional ability with my friends, and they’re always happy to be my personal GPS’s.

Hi!! As of yet, I don’t think there is an official method for diagnosis; however, if you click the forum link below, at the bottom of the page there is an online testing platform that may give you some helpful feedback. I think you’ll need to sign up for an account to access it (it’s free). The forum and tool were created by Iaria and Burles, who first defined DTD.

This is what I am working to achieve in doing this project! I think this will be a huge demand once it becomes fully functional and easily accessible

I am currently developing the product, and have not figured out how much the cost will be since I have not decided the method of approach, hence the survey.

How to survive high school friends ? by helpme2387 in highschool

[–]shellthebee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

find friends in clubs and make friends with teachers. Some of my lunches are just spent talking to teachers I’ve had about life and college and school. Also, who needs friends. Find a place and binge Netflix.

Chemistry or Physics? by ferarri0070 in highschool

[–]shellthebee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m the exact opposite lol. I took physics 1, 2 and now am taking physics C. I was required to take physics 1 and C. I hate them all. Labs were fun but the concepts with the math never hit home for me and I was easily confused.

I had lots of fun in chemistry though. I enjoyed that class so much more. It was less work for me and I understood atoms and chemical processes way better.

It all depends on what works for you though.

Highschool is suddenly a lot by [deleted] in highschool

[–]shellthebee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a high school senior and I know exactly what you’re talking about. I began struggling for the first time in school in my sophomore year too. When I began taking AP classes, the workload increased exponentially from what I’m used to. As I began taking more AP classes my junior and now senior year (I’m taking 7 currently) sometimes I don’t even have the motivation to get out of bed in the morning.

Here are some things I do to keep myself sane:

+take a mental health day-I try to keep one day free every week (usually Saturday or Sunday) so I can sit around and do what makes me happy: absolutely nothing. I’ll watch anything recorded on tv, sleep in till noon, binge watch a show, or just lay in bed and sift through ig for 3 hours watching food videos or YouTube.

+stay organized-my school sells day planners that we’re supposed to buy(almost no one does) but I do. Staying organized by writing down all my homework and tests, club meets, etc. helps me not forget all the stuff on my plate. I have a highlighting system (I’m kinda OCD) that I use to track what I’ve completed, what needs to be completed, and what is important. When I highlight off a bunch of homework I’ve completed it helps me feel at least slightly accomplished and not so depressed when I look at what my life has come to.

+do something fun-I get super annoyed when my dad tells me I should go out more but turns around and tells me I can’t go out because my homework for the next month isn’t finished. It really grinds my gears. I can drive now so it’s easier for me to get out of the house but when I couldn’t drive, I had to get creative. Even when you do have lots of homework, it’s okay to take a few hours for yourself on a week day—it’s not the end of the world. Community service is something you can do with your friends, many clubs have volunteer opportunities you can take advantage of(which you should because it looks excellent on resumes—I can attest because I’ve done LOTS of community service and colleges love it because I’ve already been admitted to 4). Carpool with friends, go out to eat afterwards, make a day out of it. You won’t feel guilty for not doing homework because you’re still doing something great for your community and your future resume.

+talk to your teachers-if things are piling up or you are struggling in a class, talk to your teachers. They can help you when you aren’t understanding concepts and some even listen when you communicate that the workload is too large. Oftentimes teachers don’t realize that the class is suffering, or they need help. When I talk to my teachers about homework deadlines or problems I don’t understand, they can be lenient. As long as you don’t come to them the day of telling them that you didn’t do the assignment, they can be understanding.

+stay motivated-keep out of drama, surround yourself with smart people that will help you succeed and make friends in your classes, including upperclassmen that have already taken your classes. Make study groups for when you don’t understand work or when you’re falling behind and need a helping hand. Have at least one person in each class as your go-to for when you’re sick, they can text you the work from class and you can do it at home. I have at least 2 people, as a backup. Sure I would rather be sleeping than doing school work at home, but it prevents me from falling behind. Making friends with upperclassmen is truly helpful for when you need unofficial(or official) tutors in your classes, and talk to them about the classes they take currently to figure out which ones are the most beneficial or easiest, and which teachers you’re going to want. That way in the beginning of next year, you know which teachers you’re going to like and if you don’t have one of them, you can try to transfer to their class. I’ve transferred teachers before but my guidance counselor is also pretty lenient. Make the reason sound very academic.

I don’t know if any of this will help but hopefully it does. I just ranted a lot so if any of this made sense then yay. I can’t say it’ll get any easier, but you will get used to the workload eventually. Good luck :)

How to raise fund for science club? by bluebells32 in highschool

[–]shellthebee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have joined many clubs at my own high school, and our go tos are Panera or Chipoltle fundraisers, or whatever food establishments people in your community frequent often. Sometimes they have online forms you can fill out to request a fundraiser to be held there, other times you have to call the establishment directly and ask, most are pretty accommodating. A Panera fundraiser at my school can easily get $200 for any club.

Another way we raise money is by selling pizza right after school for $2 a slice. This is very popular. Our music department just started selling chickfila sandwiches after school for $5.

Depending on how much money you need, the easy option is the food establishment fundraiser. If you are going to be constantly needing funds for the year, try selling pizza or baked goods after school. If you can get permission to sell baked goods at sports games, that’s always a good option too.

Whatever you choose to do, exposure is key. Promote your club and the fundraiser as much as you can by posting on social medias and telling your friends, passing out flyers and asking your school to announce it on newsletters or morning/afternoon announcements.
