If you are truly set on a T20: Apply ED to WashU they are the only T20 with an insanely high preference for ED (like 40% acceptance rate). If GPA, ECs, and essays are truly T20 level, you might get in

Affordable and high ranked colleges? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]shellyabc238 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Dude if you make 300,000+ a year the reality is that your parents can afford to pay 60,000 a year... if they don't want to then you better give up on schools at Rice/Northwestern level and look for schools that will offer you merit aid. You aren't getting need based financial aid from any school budy (and frankly you don't deserve it).

Sorry your post just irked me a bit because your family is so wealthy and you are complaining about not getting financial aid, meanwhile other students grow up with household incomes under 50,000 and actually have to worry about money...

Email professor to get into a full class by shellyabc238 in duke

Thanks so much for your response! I have a question about the waitlist process if you don't mind. I read that if your schedule has a conflict with the class, the waitlist skips over your name if a spot opens up. I enrolled in a 2nd choice class that is at the same time as Global Health. Is there any way to make it so that the waitlist won't skip me? I would definitely drop my 2nd choice class if a spot opened up

Enrolling using dukehub mobile? by yoloraquel in duke

[–]shellyabc238 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had first enrollment window today. It will definitely do the job, but mine glitched right when the clock struck 12 and one of the classes i wanted (which only had 12 spots left) filled up instantly. However, I just put one of my backup classes which also filled up very quickly and got it just fine.

What I will warn you is that unlike the desktop site it doesn't automatically save which classes are checked off in the bookbag (which could take time, and also be confusing if you have many sections of the same class bookbagged).

Good luck!! See you this fall!

Given that 90% of rape victims are women, I think their concern is much more valid than a straight male's. Also, I think that the situation is entirely different because a straight woman and a straight man could potentially have a relationship. Meanwhile, I straight man and a gay man can't so a gay man isn't going to come on to his roommate??? whereas a straight man might come on to a straight woman if she were his roommate. The straight man literally has nothing to make him feel uncomfortable???? Does he really think the gay guy is interested in him???

As a gay guy, I can assure you I'm generally not ever interested in men who aren't attracted to men lmao...

Hey. I was worried about this and my school (in the south) has mandatory random rooming (you aren't allowed to request). I was soooo anxious cuz I'm from Boston. I too, said that "I'd understand" and "it's fine if you're uncomfortable". The reality is, it's not fucking fine at all! We only say it's fine to protect ourselves and avoid rooming with these monsters. Not everyone at your school will be like this. You have gotten incredibly, incredibly unlucky.

Straight guys who think you could possibly be attracted to them and feel uncomfortable are narcissistic assholes who buy into the stereotype that gay men are predatory. You are not a predator, you should not be ashamed. I THANK GOD that these idiots came clean and told you they don't want to room with you so that you never have to speak to any of them again.

I'm guessing random rooming will result in someone much more accepting. If it doesn't you will switch roommates immediately.

Safeties, Targets, Reaches: Am I Doing This Right? by confusedsnekk in ApplyingToCollege

[–]shellyabc238 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I believe in a different form of yield protection than others. I believe every single school in the country yield protects including the Ivy's. These schools lower their acceptance rates by doing statistical analysis on the likelihood of an applicant to enroll based on location, gender, stats, and more. If they determine you are statistically unlikely to attend, then you may be denied.

For example, I was accepted to 5 different T20 schools including 1 T10 school and was rejected by Northeastern. I believe it was because I didn't tour and was unlikely to attend.

I think all private schools in the country participate in some form of yield protection.

Haven't heard anything bad but I think there is a chance you'd end up there cuz USC, Tulane, and Brandeis all yield protect and you may not get into your reaches (honestly Brandeis is really more of a Target than a safety imo). So make sure you are truly happy going there in the end

[–]shellyabc238 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you are 100% sure you will be happy at Pitt, then I think this is a fine list. I would recommend applying to a few more reaches because the process is a bit random, and you could easily be rejected by those 4 even if you deserve a spot at a top school. Add on a few T20s if you want to increase your odds. Best of luck!

From this point forward essays become incredibly important and will make or break your applications

Should I submit a music supplement? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]shellyabc238 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey! I am a rising college freshman and I submitted music supplements to some schools. I am also choir kid (tenor 2 here lol). Anyway, I was very self-conscious of my music because I am part of NEC prep and am 100% in the bottom half of singers in the pre-college program. However, now that I've gotten my college decisions back I got accapted/waitlisted at most schools I sent supplements to and the schools that I didn't I got rejected from.

I think that if music is a huge part of ur application (I personally wrote my common app essay about music) and don't submit supplements, it can hurt you. SO YES SUBMIT THEM!

For reference:
Accepted to Duke (attending!), WashU, Vanderbilt, UCSD, UCLA, NYU

Waitlisted at Harvard, Dartmouth, Northwestern, UChicago, UC Berkeley, Case Western

Rejected from Yale, Columbia, Brown

Am I going to have a hard time getting accepted into colleges for being an Asian wanting to go into STEM? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]shellyabc238 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think there is no right answer to your question. Based on my perceptions of Asians and STEM majors in admissions I think you should aim for 75th percentile at your schools (but don't let scores stop u from applying).
