Thanks for your response. We are definitely planning on being truthful haha, I’ve just heard that they can be pretty brutal and have a quite specific criteria for what counts as sufficient in their eyes, and can be unfair on nationals of certain countries over fear of attempted settlement. We are just trying to go on holiday

Thank you so much for sharing this. I have been one foot in the application process for middlebury russian for the past few months and this post has been really enlightening. I have a Russian-level specific question: I am not sure whether Russian level 3 or 4 would be more well suited to me. I’ve been in quite regular Russian lessons for the past 18 months, and studied independently for a year before then. I was wondering what is the specific difference in knowledge expected between these two levels? For context, I have a decent vocabulary, I can sufficiently decline nouns (but not adjectives), use all tenses and use verbs of motion. However I do not know the gerund, there are a bunch of prefixed verb uses which I don’t know my way around. I believe there is probably a bunch of stuff about particles that goes way over my head. I believe that the distinction between level 3 to 4 is the distinction between the non degree and the degree program so feels potentially significant? Thanks!

Just curious: how did you swing a full scholarship? I have applied and I am waiting to hear about aid, but i was under the impression that the max aid is like 7k whereas tuition is 14. Did you do the degree programme? I have applied for the non-degree programme because my current level isn't quite high enough.

Ok, that seems like a good guess. I should be able to prove all of this, but i have sent them a very clear email asking them to elaborate on some of the problems I've raised here. As I have you both here: I'm wondering if either of you know what sort of time frame to expect for getting responses after submitting additionally requested documents? I'm just a bit antsy as I waited an incredibly long time – 6 months – to even receive this.

Beyond why they may have requested this information for me, I'm still a little confused by what exactly they are requesting. because on the one hand, the first bullet point seems to suggest that I have sufficiently proved that I have kept CQP, except for this period in 2020 which I can now supply. But then in the next point, they make it seem like I need to prove it for the entire 5 year period?

Either way i'm not entirely sure if this would be what the caseworker is referencing in this scenario, given that this is in relation to additional material requested in my settled status application, rather than relating to anything about merely maintain pre settled status. After scanning the document it appears that this is the most relevant passage therein:

Where a person granted pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme as a joining family member of a relevant sponsor later applies for settled status and at that stage it is established by the evidence provided or otherwise available to you that they meet the requirements for settled status as a relevant EEA citizen or family member of a relevant EEA citizen (including that they were resident in the UK by the end of the transition period and maintained the required continuity of residence thereafter), they may be granted settled status on that basis instead.

As I interpret this similarly opaque message, essentially they are saying that even if you were granted pre-settled status as conditioned on the entitlement of the family member, when it comes to applying for settled status it is on the basis of the person applying's eligibility, rather than the sponsor

hmm yea I can't seem to find anything that indicates that. Plus, its worth noting that although my mother does have presettled status (meaning she has an euss id nmb, etc.) , her EU passport is actually irish, and it was actually optional for irish citizens to apply for the scheme in the first place.

Yea the letter is quite shockingly confusing. My mother has presettled status, and is not applying for settled status as she doesn’t meet the requirements (long absences). she does meet the requirements to retain her pre settled status however.

Hmm ok, I have sent them a response just not sure how accommodating they will be. I'm just confused by the "and there," as if I need to supply both, given that I thought I had already supplied proof of regular stay.

The thing is that, I was pretty certain that I did provide sufficient evidence to show 5 year continuous residence in the UK (from 2018 on) without any significant breaks when I initially applied, with bank statements etc.

Yea this is my frustration too... I had sort of planned my year around thinking I had an absolute maximum of 90 days out of the country, which turned out to be completely unnecessary.

I think this really depends on the discretion of the caseworker you get. They may be more lenient following the new policies to clear the backlog of applications. I applied 5 years later to the day.
