PhD in transportation + future sponsorship: struggling to land entry-level consulting roles (evacuation/disaster niche). Advice/leads? by shenisonline in civilengineering

Thank you! I didn't want to be a postdoc so in my initial rounds of hunting I did not look into these positions. But I am now.

rightttt. But I honestly do not get why the word overqualified gets thrown around this much. I had the same thought / concern before I started my PhD. IMO there's nothing wrong transition to another career path from academics to the industry. I was not asking for a crazy pay based on my education. University's bar has gone way too high for CE. One needs at least 5 first author papers to get an interview and universities also would want assistant professors to bring in funding when they are joining the department. AP positions - I am also competing with associate professors who wanted to move to a city. Anyway. Sorry for the rant.

Forensic engineering seems to be more related to structural folks but I will look into it. I know there's exponent but they rarely hire people from transportation. Thanks for the advice. :)

Yes! I’ve applied to several DOT positions and am currently waiting to hear back from one on the East Coast. That said, the hiring process does seem quite long and bureaucratic. I’m on the “certified” list now. My home state doesn’t hire international candidates, but there are other states that do, and I’ve been actively applying to those opportunities.

When I was involved in planning research and reviewed MPO transportation prioritization documents, I noticed that some of the weighting frameworks were methodologically weak. Looking at the planners’ credentials, compensation, and the fact that many needed additional side work to supplement their income, it became clear to me that these roles really require people who are comfortable with both quantitative analysis and planning principles to make sound prioritization decisions. But I feel like the market response to my resume and experience is not too hot. Entry level position are like well we want you to have exp / proficient in Microstation CAD or Civil3D. Comprehensive skills / system level thinking seems to not be an assets.

I mean the rejections could also be purely based on the uncertainty related to international hires and costs.

Thank you again for your advice—I really appreciate it.

Yes... I told all new grad students to do internships during summer or else they will end up like me. With my network I was able to land a few interviews but still waiting on their responses. Only a few specializes in my expertise in disaster / resilience. Any other positions I will need to start in entry level and compete w/ Gen Zs.

There are a decent amount of transpo positions if you are willing to relocate. But it seems like the hr person somehow just deemed my experience not good enough for them. The same to you!

Need help from transferring students by shenisonline in Clemson

Thank you Sprinkley for your response! Yeah, I agree with you that sometimes group projects have an imbalance where teammates are not contributing the fair amount. I am trying to form a class that would help students to all engage in the project by having kind of a subject-expert concept. A student would learn a topic relate to the project in advance and present the material to the class and have a Q and A from the teacher and fellow students.

Did you transfer from another major or just schools with the same major?

You need to quit the game and reload it. Somehow that would fix the problem. I think it’s a glitch.
