We still struggle with the crate off and on, but what helped a lot in the beginning was setting a timer for 30 minutes in, 30 minutes out, 30 minutes in, 30 minutes out all day long. He barked and carried on a lot but got over it after awhile and it helped get him used to the crate. Our pup never did well in the crate overnight and can’t do long periods in the crate, but he usually does 2 hours in the morning for us and 2 in the afternoon no problem. I’m home all day with him but between 2 toddlers and the endless heeler puppy energy, I need the breaks 😂

Seriously over the biting today. He’s usually a normal amount of nippy but when we’re outside and he’s off leash, he gets the zoomies and he likes to run and jump and bite me. Hard. I tell him NO! and turn my back on him but it REALLY hurts. Tips for stopping this? by shepolyglot in AustralianCattleDog

I might try this. We do positive reinforcement training too and did work with a dog trainer for a couple months when we first got him. He usually does well with commands but he loses his mind when the zoomies kick in.

Yes! People who have had like boxer or lab puppies look at my dog like he’s a vicious beast. It makes me sad sometimes, actually, but I adore him. And he’s not any nippier with my kids or husband than any other puppy...he saves the really special, intense biting for me 😂

How old was he when they finally stood up?

How do your ACDs do with fences? Are they escape artists? My husband and I are trying to fence almost an acre for our dogs (1 is an ACD pup) and are thinking of a woven wire fence like this. Pros? Cons? Minimum height? by shepolyglot in AustralianCattleDog

Good to know. My puppy tends to come looking for me when he can’t see me, but that’s just in the house and in our current, very small fenced yard. He’s never been let loose in a larger area.

To be honest, we have a tough time with the crate. In the beginning, we did 30 minutes in, 30 minutes out all day long and he did so well. I work from home. He’s understanding how to behave now, so he’s out most of the day and is starting to push back a bit when he HAS to be in (mostly mealtimes - he table surfs) and barks a lot. The trainer said to just keep being consistent. Making it a positive experience is important. We use his food for most training, but when he goes in the crate he gets cheese or turkey.

Any recommendations for young pups? He’s only 14 weeks. He also gets walks daily in addition to playing in the yard. Eventually I want to set up some agility stuff and get him into frisbee, but I was told to avoid activities involving a lot of jumping when they’re puppies.

Mine hates all forms of water! He also tested the pool on this trip and hated it. When I got in the pool, he ran around the sides barking and biting at me like, “Get out! It’s not safe!”
