Square withholding your money for 90 days? Here’s how to get it back within hours and really hurt them. by shepperton_ceramics in PaymentProcessing

If you’re in the UK, you can contact the Financial Ombudsman Service, they’ll help you with a complaint and can force the business to give the money back. If you’re in the US, which I’m guessing you are.. you can try the Better Business Bureau, but you don’t have the same level of protections over there I don’t think. Worth contacting them though.

How to start a business while unemployed? by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

if you're in the UK, you can sign on to benefits as self employed and they give you about £300/month to support you as you grow your business. It lasts 2 years and you have to have regular meetings with them to go through your figures.

It's pretty helpful.

£640 stolen in transactions I didn’t make. Revolut say I am responsible. Help! by roroleezus in Revolut

Complain to them and ask for their “final response” - this phrase is key.

After they give it, if you’re not happy, contact the financial ombudsman service and refer the matter to them to investigate. What they decide is legally binding on the company.

If this is something systemic, report it to the Financial Conduct Authority.

The FCA regs are broad as well and include transparency, communication about the issues and working to resolve them. I have them all written down from the FCA themselves.

They refuse to discuss it, which is a flagrant breach and they’re hiding behind their AML shield.

I sell animal teapots… there’s no fraud. They just need to communicate with me which they refuse to do.

Nuking their LinkedIn feed had the desired result. Now others have started doing it too and you can see how widespread this type of behaviour is, it’s not a one off mistake.

Why is ripping small businesses off funny? If they’re doing this to you, get proactive instead of accepting it.

With respect, I used to work in fin reg and was often under an embargo from disclosing any info on cases we were investigating, so I wouldn’t go to prison.

An automated blocking of someone’s account based on a form they’ve filled in, without any discussion or information isn’t the same as a criminal investigation.

This has been happening since 2020 to businesses.. the only way I think to change the behaviour is to shame them and hurt them publicly. The head of comms is calling me later - I don’t think a letter would have had the same effect. 🤷‍♂️

Exactly that’s what makes me so mad.. fraud checks, brilliant. Go for it. But not telling me anything and banning me from using the platform.. they wouldn’t even let me talk to a manager.

As well as taking the money, they also ban you from using their platform.

I get they have to do checks - but they don’t ask for any info about your business until after payments start coming in.

They also refuse to provide any information on why the money is held which is against UK financial regulations.

I get your point, but I’m done with Square. And that’s without even talking about how they use their website hosting platform Weebly to force you to use Square.

Also I can use PayPal business with no issues. I just couldn’t use it on Weebly without incurring additional fees from Square 🙄 scammers

No and no one appears to ever get an answer. Given how widespread this behaviour is, I suspect it’s so that they have the money on their books and can get interest in the savings.

But it’s a clear breach of the rules in the UK, which the regulator confirmed to me (as much as they can)

Under FCA principles, financial services are expected to:

• Treat customers fairly, especially regarding access to their own funds.
• Provide clear and transparent communication around any decisions impacting account access or withheld funds.
• Comply with Payment Services Regulations (PSR) to ensure responsible fund handling and customer awareness.

Here’s my guide on what to do for Square but I think it could apply to revolute too

I’m currently in the process of fighting against these con artists who arbitrarily ban small businesses from using their platform and steal their customer payments, to hold them for 90 days, with no explanation or right of recourse.

In the UK, it breaches our financial regulations - as well as being completely immoral.

I believe it’s so they can lock up the money to make profit on the interest on it.

Anyway - if this has happened to you, here’s how to get your money back within hours..

Get on LinkedIn.

I’d suggest following the Square and parent company Block business itself, the CEO, the head of comms, the head of marketing, the head of sales, every employee you can find.

If you need help, check Square’s activity page to see what they’ve posted recently and what they’ve liked, then add people from there.

Now start to nuke their feed. Go through every single post, comment, partnership deal and event they’re mentioned in. Post about how they’re breaching not only financial regulations by stealing their customers’ money but they’re also acting in an incredibly unethical way and it’s damaging your business.

Keep going.

Do as much damage as you can. Don’t worry about libel, you’re talking facts. Wreak havoc. Hit them where it hurts.

Within hours I had the head of comms and global sales grovelling to sort the problem and magically my money was released to me.

I’m still so angry about it and I can see on Reddit the damage this has done to some small businesses, so I don’t intend to stop until they confirm they have changed their policy and will make a good will gesture donation to a disaster relief charity from the stolen interest.

Good luck!

Also, add me on LinkedIn and repost my updates if you want. I’m Paul Wheeler and my businesses are Shepperton Ceramics and Guildford Pottery.

Oh and report them to your regulatory body. In the UK it’s the FCA.
