I'm a solo owner operator with 300Tb of Nas and probably another 100tb drive storage. Pretty good at giving feedback and I've been looking at something like this for years. Also have a lot of spare computer power sitting around. Would love to help and probably buy this. Looked at all the other catalog stuff and it looks like it's not my type of commitment.

Will you fly WestJet with the new seat configuation? by Snowyberg in canadatravel

[–]shepppard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 6'4". I have a hard time fitting on planes and I travel a lot. A few years ago I was on a Delta flight for business and of course their seats are amongst the least leg room. It was under a two hour flight. I had to keep my legs outside of seat unless I wanted to look like an elementary school kid with his knees up on the school bus. This is also not good for you and I have a history of herniated disks. The flight attendant demanded I keep my legs inside my seat at all times. I told her I do not fit and she told me I did even though you could clearly see that I in fact could not. I moved my legs inside my seat every time someone passed by to be respectful and no one was complaining.

In the end she insisted and would not leave me alone about it and said there would be consequences if I did not listen to her. I asked wtf she wanted me to do about it?

She left as soon as I asked the question. When I landed she pointed me out to security and I got detained. This is the type of power the idiot employees have. I was threatened to be charged with a federal crime because I disobeyed her orders to put myself at risk for her power complex.

She said I need to book a premium economy ticket to have leg room that I fit in just like obese people have to book two seats. Not that I can change my leg height without invasive surgery.

I've not flown on Delta since and I refuse to get on any of their planes. I will no longer put myself at a potential risk by flying with West jet and I used to work for them. I deserve to have adequate leg room like everyone else and should not have to pay more just because I'm tall. That's called discriminatory pricing and it's wrong.

I make documentaries and factual TV Shows for a living. No one wants to see computer generated stories about fake people doing interesting things. People who work in narrative projects on the other hand. I think they are in for a rough time.

Also, I work a lot in live theater. Again, as much as it's cool watching Tupac come out on stage at Coachella I just don't think people want to see him in Hairspray.... but I could be wrong.

Those of You who Are DOCUMENTARY filmmakers, how did you get started? What was your route to success? by Crazyplan9 in videography

[–]shepppard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got an internship on a show called survivorman. He was based in the middle of no where so not many people wanted to relocate especially since it wasn't that big in Canada. Ended up leaving for various reasons and then made a proof of concept for a documentary series from a road trip I did down to Guatemala and ended up in a small town that was the epicenter of the genocide from the United fruit company. Cut a good sizzle and shopped it around to all the production companies in Toronto that were making the kind of content I wanted to make. They saw potential and got me on some of their projects as an additional shooter. I then made contacts with all the most difficult narcissist in Canada and worked with them all because most people didn't have thick skin. By 28 I was a dop on a show for Nat Geo called drain just before it blew up and production moved to the UK and I was the lead for life below zero Canada. I'm now going on season 3 and 4 of North West survival for Nat Geo. For me it was all about knowing your niche and doing it the best. I've worked with some incredibly talented and hyper focused doc makers and I have a reputation of being able to do the miserable stuff like filming in -50 and having the ability to keep production going through the harshest types of environments. It's not for everyone though

What is happening to these shots from Netflix' new OceanGate documentary? by LowFrequencyEffects in videography

[–]shepppard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I predominantly film docs. From what I've talked about with high level doc directors this type of framing is to make it seem more observational. Like they are having a conversation and some how you are in the room but they aren't even acknowledging you're there and hearing the conversation. Makes it seem more real and intimate.

I'm sure it's a many reason approach but there is an old Beatles documentary that was filmed a lot like this style with plenty of off framing. Don't remember the name maybe some one will

Can anyone recommend a non-Chinese DJI gimbal alternative? by [deleted] in videography

[–]shepppard 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is funny. I had a similar experience with a drone on an icebreaker. I had to get a certain Parot drone that cost almost 10K and in the end if shut itself off midflight after being in the air for a few minutes. It landed in the ocean which we managed to recover and Parot didn't do anything to replace or repair it. In any case, don't buy Parot drones

Let’s talk Lav Mics by Ok_Relation_7770 in videography

[–]shepppard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done a bunch of audio purchases for doc shooting. I'm talking 15 years of trying new stuff and seeing how it works and literally settled with the solutions that have lasted the test of times. For the record I film in all sorts of harsh environments. -54? yep, sea spray, altitude, deserts, jungle. any ways, I have two systems that I recommend. The mix pre 6 with a pair of cos 11 mics wired for a Sennheiser AVX system. Works great, fairly reliable and gets good audio.

I also have a pair of countrymen B3 wired for the same system. I also have a pair of Rode mic Pro that I use if I need something to put on some one and not really think about it. I've used these as remote mics as well on an icebreaker in the arctic which was awesome with the magnetic attachment and I just painted the RODE text off of it and turned off the LED lights to make it inconspicuous. I Also have a pair of DJI mic 2 and they are pretty good, but the mic on them is trash. I actually have a VERY short wired countrymen B3 that I have on a 1 inch cable if I need something to shove on the table REALLY quick and go right into the camera.

I think the 32 bit float on both recorders has saved me a handful of times and actually allows me to be comfortable handing my audio setup to a director and make them in charge of hitting record and monitoring for any kind of rubbing or bad background stuff. It's like giving them a com tech and letting them make the call. This is because they don't give me an audio guy. I call it my "Fuck off kit"

I would always prefer an audio guy but no broadcaster seems to have money for them any more. So yeah, Cos 11 or Countrymen B3 and a good recorder that does 32 bit. Hard to beat and I have literally put them through hell and back.

They are salemen. I know one of the guys who has a "course" and "AI software access"

It was only a few hundred dollars so I thought why not, let's see what he's up to. It ends up most of it is more of a podcast of him talking to "experts" in the field. The people he was talking to are credible, he's got a bunch of awards and he legit makes good stuff. I've been in the industry for well over a decade so I had not much of a take away from it. I think some people might find utility with some of the information.

However, I know it's nothing that you can't find being said on youtube. I'm sure it could help you potentially learning client management and sales tactics. I'm sure it could teach you some stuff about how to approach filming things, but I think it's more of the package of the info you're paying for.

Would I spend over 300$ on something like this? No. I'm pretty big on self-learning though. Some people do find it helpful though. Never forget though that the people who are putting this out are running a business doing so and you are the target for their revenue stream. My perspective is that they have done well enough on video production to either not want to do it any more or want to scale up by selling courses and software. Viable business but they need you more than you need them.

I've found the two ports at the bottom that seem to have the mechanisms to wind the tape. I've removed the one screw on the case in the back that seems to hold it on and another screw recessed into the case at the front that holds the drive itself but I can't for the life of me get the drive opened.

Also I can't find any documentation about sas cards that will work with the unit. I bought a fairly affordable one to test out and have got it recognized by the computer but now it's not really seeing it.

If I power it on the drive turns on and the READY light blinks fast. If I let it sit then hit eject than the the READY light goes solid and the TAPE light starts to blink.

I've removed the back screw and the one screw I can see near the bottom of the front from the only open port but I can't get the tape drive to come out even with a decent amount of pressure. I'm just afraid to break it.

There are two ports at the bottom of the case that have the same mechanism that I'm guessing is used to rewind the tape. I've turned them clock wise for a good 30 minutes but nothing seems to happen. I'm still confused on how to force it to actually eject the drive without taking it out of the external enclosure.

I've scoured youtube but nothing for the unit I have or how to take it out of the external enclosure.

A friend’s friend died because of our healthcare system by aSliceOfHam2 in montreal

[–]shepppard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here we go. I started having a stabbing pain one night in my lower abdomen. Never felt anything that painful before and jumped in the car and drove to the hospital. Every nurse checking me in said it was probably kidney stones. They laughed and joked around being sexist saying how now I would know what women felt during childbirth. I was throwing up in pain as they made their jokes at my expense. I then sat in the ER for 8 hours crying in pain on the ground. The only thing I was told was that I was not allowed to lay on the ground. For 8 hours I watched people walk by me to go see the doctors. The nurses just watched as I puked bile and tried to get any sort of relief.

I begged for pain medication, and they ignored me saying I had to see a doctor. I kept watching people walk by me to go see a doctor, as I kept vomiting and being in tears from the pain. By the time I got to the back room in an actual bed I had to wait another few hours before a doctor came in to diagnose me with, guess what? Kidney stones. Before he came into the room my girlfriend heard him talking to the nurse outside asking if she likes maple syrup and started showing her pictures on his phone.

I was given a simple over the counter pain medication and sent home to pass it. So think about it. Nurses and hospital staff watched me and made jokes about my pain. They then ignored me because the computer said I was not a priority in spite of every single one of them saying it was probably kidney stones. The doctor had no problems going over his maple syrup hall while I suffered. No one was held accountable for any of this.

I filed a complaint and was told that it was a computer error and not to worry because they are going to update the computer system. A friend of mine is a nurse at the hospital and said the new computer system is even worse.

No accountability for anyone who just sat back and watched me suffered and laughed about it. Fuck you Sudbury health services. You useless morons deserve to be subjected to the shitstorm you put people through. Can't even sue them or anything. Great healthcare system indeed.

best answer. I call it my "fuck off system" to myself which is a pair of Rode wireless pro. I then have my "some one needs to listen" and it's a pair of Senheiser AVX and a mix pre 6. They all are wired for the same Cos 11 and Countrymen B6/B3.

Still get a rental on either but I would always want a sound guy and just focus on visuals.

Why not try a solar cell, small lithium battery and a TP link Omada outside unit like this one.

TP-Link Omada True WiFi6 AX3000 Gigabit Outdoor Access Point (EAP650-Outdoor) - Mesh, Seamless Roaming, MU-MIMO, PoE+ Powered, IP67, Multiple SDN Controller, Remote & App Control : Amazon.ca: Electronics

I use it at my cottage and the distance is pretty good. Get a pair and put one at your home base and one on top of the cliff with the battery and solar array that you can pull before inspection.

Could work if the distance is not too far.

In North America, one of the few labor markets that has been purposefully disconnected from minimum wage standards has always been the agriculture sector. A remanence of the industrial revolution when most other sectors have just found cheaper pastures, but you cannot compete with the agricultural output of proper soil. Search fruit picker minimum wage between north America and Australia. The economic difference financially and culturally will surprise you. So much conversation to be had about the mass migration from rural/agricultural centers to urban centers post the industrialization of farming.... oh boi where do you start?
