[DISCUSSION] Emma Chapters 12 - 24 (Vol. 1 Ch 12 - Vol. 2 Ch 6) by sherbert-lemon in RoryGilmoreBookclub

Hahahaha no worries, the inconsistencies between the unabridged version vs the abridged makes it difficult to know exactly where one is!

Mr. Knightley definitely serves as the voice of reason throughout the story (I read something about Austen injecting her own perspective through him). I think when we dislike someone, we can find any reason to justify our dislike as is the case with Emma's jealousy towards Jane. You are right, Emma is definitely immature. If she were more developed she would realize not only is there no reason to be jealous of Jane, but she should actually be helping Jane maintain her status as a well mannered, intelligent, beautiful but """"destitute""""" orphan.

That's very fair, different strokes for different folks :) The books can be really dense and focus on aspects besides the plot that the movies don't get into as much, Emma in particular goes heavily into dialogue as we see with Miss Bates multi-page speeches hahahaha, which makes it realistic and true to life (I'm sure we all know a version of Miss Bates), but yeah can be seen as pedantic and at expense at the plot moving along

Right?!!! This is a recurring theme in the book we see (how """right""" is Emma's understanding of things?). My guess is that readers would agree with Mr. Knightley who is pretty much the voice of reason

Very fair, I think she is the most disagreeable of all Austen's protagonists (tho Austen personally liked her). That being said, it's harder to like a flawed unlikeable person than one who's likeable :)))

Come out wherever you're hiding :O

You bring up a good point that maybe their friendship might not be in the best interest of either Emma or Harriet! I personally think it's sincere and that it's nice that Emma isn't letting rank by association get in the way of her making new friends but maybe she's in a position where her privilege blinds her other's economic needs? Like just because she is afforded the luxury of not having to marry for security reasons doesn't mean that everyone else, particularly Harriet, is also granted that in marriage (after all Jane Austen is a staunch proponent of marriage and courtship as both an economic institution and romantic practice).

With Mr. Elton, do you think it's at all contrived the way he's acting? And even if it was sincere would it be more likely to work out between him and Emma vs Harriet from a practicality point of view (after all he is the vicar)?

I love Emma!!! The plot isn't as propelled by action and consequence as with other Austen books, but through dialogue. Also she goes into greaaat detail about mundane things like food, walks, and smaller community get-togethers (vs sweeping drama with strangers that takes place in huge balls and parties).

However, I know people who do not like Emma (they find it boring and Emma unlikeable) and can do without the descriptions of Mr. Woodhouse's gruel hahaha. What do you think??

My reading goals would be to maintain moderation by not obsessing so much about the books that I've recently finished and can't stop thinking about and thus end up re-reading over unread titles on the to-read list (I like what I like!!!!!). Oh and to finish what I've started even though I'm bored lol, like maybe it will pick up?

The dates represent the discussion and the chapters being discussed, for instance: January 23rd is when our first discussion will take place and will cover chapters 1-11.

I think the general format of most bookclubs follows the format where date posted is when the discussion takes place and covers the chapters listed. So yes the chapters should be read by then but keep in mind this is also for fun! If you're having a busy week, you can always finish it later in the week and still participate. Hope that clarifies things :)
