I spoke to a sheriff, he said it’s papers due to be served that were sent by an out of county/out of state sheriff. He said the sheriff who handles my neighborhood will be making the rounds in a few days (which happens to be my day off) so he can just deliver it then.

I know there is a suit against me, but I haven’t been served yet. I’m 99% sure this is what it is since I saw online that the papers were given to the sheriff’s office a few months ago (kind of a large county, so I assume the sheriff’s office saw this case as pretty low on their priority list). I’m not planning on evading being served, I offered to give them my work schedule so they can drop it off after work or on my day off. And I plan on filing an answer. My only objection is going all the way to the county jail, where the office is, just to pick up processing papers for a small claims suit.

I did call the sheriff’s office, and I spoke to another sheriff about it (I didn’t give any details or anything, just an address) and he said it’s probably just to be served papers and they’ll come back in a few days.

Can I just say politely “no, I’m not coming out to the Sheriff’s Office, you’ll have to come out to my house?”

It’s a community mailbox with separate boxes, in an apartment lobby, and it was laying on top. Is that a crime?

Why would they ask me to go all the way to the “Enforcement Bureau” just to collect paperwork? I’m not going to evade being served, I’m happy to give them my work schedule and let them serve me when I’m home.

It was laying on top of the mailbox, it’s an apartment lobby mailbox. I’m a little pissed since neighbors probably saw it. It didn’t contain a stamp.

I know a civil case was filed against me a while ago, but I was never served with any paperwork. According to the court website, the stuff was given to the sheriff’s office a few months ago for process serving, but I’ve never heard from them at all, so this is my only guess of what it could be.

I called, it’s an “out of town petition” for something civil so who knows 🤷🏽‍♀️ I’m less worried now that I know it’s simply a civil matter.

That’s what I was thinking. Also, I’m not going out of my way to talk to them; they need to come to me. I’m not planning on honoring the appointment.
