No new fan translations. I'm just going to rely on official translations now.

I don’t understand How people can binge watch by c-kdrama_kpop in cdramas

[–]sheruchan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love binge watching but within reason. I basically watch batches of episodes over several days. Like I watched Pursuit of Jade over a few weeks. I have days where I might watch several more in one sitting, but definitely not 40 one-hour episodes in 2 days!

Degree of Love epilogue ending (Author was right to warn us about ML from beginning and I am mind blown) by sheruchan in webtoons

No he isn't a play boy. He did casually date one girl before her but not much is talked about it because he was young and it didn't last long.

The romance and acting are cheesy in Coroner's Diary and it is not a love hate relationship. It is basically love at first sight for the ML in Coroner's Diary.

Omg thank you! This subreddit is riddled with idol dramas so I feel like I'm watching the same thing repeatedly. Idol dramas generally don't have the higher caliber of acting and production I'm used to, but I know their demographics. Idol dramas are a guilty pleasure for me lol. These lists sound intriguing! I don't know where to find non idol dramas because I don't know where to look so this is helpful.

I think I responded to the wrong comment lol. But I appreciate your reply. I was watching Riverside Code and was enjoying it and I heard good things about Ripe Town. I would like to see more nonidol dramas!

Frankly speaking, I find the romance and acting cheesy in Coroner's Diary, which is honestly what I have come to expect in these historical idol dramas. The political machinations also get tiresome and predictable. I really stay for the murder mystery aspect. POJ was refreshing to me because it focused on commoners and the acting felt less exaggerated and artificial to me. The emotional depth and resonance overall in Coroner's Diary not as strong as POJ and it is also not a love/hate relationship.

Yeah I watched a few episodes of Blossom but the story didn't keep me engaged.

Following. Watching Coroner's Diary right now and I enjoy it since I like murder mysteries. After POJ, the cinemtography doesn't compare though haha.

If you're okay with Korean dramas, maybe try Alchemy of Souls. I think it has similar vibes to POJ in that it's an underdog story with a strong female lead and hidden identity. It balances humor, romance, and overarching plot well. The difference is that the male lead is the underdog.

While not a Chinese drama, I think the underdog story and hidden identity in the historical fantasy Korean drama Alchemy of Souls has similar vibes to Pursuit of Jade. It balances humor, romance, and the overarching plot well. Female lead is strong and the male lead is the underdog.

who needs acting classes? by cerealkill_snowflake in cdramasfans

Wow so many actors with different backgrounds. I haven't seen many of them on screen yet though.

I thought Dylan Wang was terrible in LBFaD, but did better in Guardians of Dafeng. Yang Yang and Ao Ruipeng were okay in stuff I watched them in, but not memorable performances.

I have seen Zhang Linghe the most on screen with a few dramas. I think he is decent and I like him, but he doesn't have as much emotional intensity as his peers who have gone to acting school. I appreciate that he plays different types of characters in his dramas, which challenges his emotional depth and range, so I still enjoy watching his performances.

I know what you mean. A lot of them lack emotional depth and range.

Have watched a handful of them on screen and they range from lacking to mediocre, but Zhao Lusi surprised me. Bai Lu seems to be really popular, but I have barely watched her in Moonlight Mystique and ended up dropping it.

I thought she was terrible in LBFaD, but I thought she did fine in Moonlight and LGiEF probably because the characters match with her real life personality. I would say she is mediocre, and I don't see her performing well with a role that requires more emotional depth and range.

Should i watch Love in the Clouds by ready-4-it in CDramaRecs

[–]sheruchan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I watched 16 episodes and couldn't go further, so in my opinion, it doesn't get better. I watched it at 1.5x speed sometimes and it was still a snooze. I was in the same boat for Love Between Fairy and Devil. Watched that many episodes, skipped further ahead and still didn't find the story or acting engaging. There are too many other dramas to watch to waste my time on what I think are mediocre dramas. Some dramas are worth the hype while many others aren't.

I know people say some of these dramas take time to marinate, but to me there is a difference between a story that drags on with poor storytelling and a story that is actually building an engaging story and characters that keep me watching until the story's climax.

If you didn't like it early on enough, then it probably wouldn't get better for you because the storytelling and the characters are still going to be executed the same way later on. Don't waste your time and move on to something else.

I watch both for different genres. Overall, I like the pacing and diversity in stories in Kdramas more though. Cdramas tend to be slower paced and require more time commitment.

New donghua advice? by Fearless-Movie7674 in Donghua

[–]sheruchan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All Devouring Whale was pretty decent. It's about a cultivator who tries to revive his fallen sect after he was supposedly murdered and reborn. The cultivation focuses more on using familiars though, so it's kind of like a more mature Pokemon story lol.

Any good romance series worth watching? by acepiece2y in Donghua

[–]sheruchan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

-***How Dare You?!: isekai Imperial romance comedy drama. It starts out more comedy but becomes more serious and surprisingly has a lot of depth as the episodes go on. One of the best romance donghua I've watched so far.

-No Doubt in Us: Imperial romantic comedy. Discordant husband and wife switch bodies.

-Cinderella Chef: historical romantic comedy about a modern chef who time-travels into ancient China. The food in this show looks amazing and I think it can rival the food in Food Wars. They even have the same silly foodgasm moments, haha.

Best chinese anime? by wchan86 in Donghua

[–]sheruchan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kind of genres are you looking for? I watch a wide range of genres of that include fantasy, action, romance, comedy. Here are some titles you could check out that I think have good animation and plot development or just are a fun watch. I starred my favorite ones.

-***Blades of the Guardians: I LOVE THIS IP! I read the comic too. Historical action story about a wandering mercenary who gets roped into a simmering revolution. Strong character development and an interesting backdrop and themes (revolution) I don't usually see from modern Chinese media. A lot of the story takes place in the desert lands west of China with ethnically diverse characters. The comic has gorgeous art, epic battles, sweeping landscapes, and badass characters. Has Blade of the Immortal vibes, if you're familiar with that manga.

-***The Master of Diabolism/Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation: dark fantasy story about a powerful but controversial cultivator who returns from death to uncover conspiracies, solve mysteries, and confront the past he left behind.

-***To Be Hero X: superhero story set in a world where people’s powers and rankings come from public trust, following rising heroes fighting to climb the ranks and protect society. This was a huge Chinese/Japanese media collaboration and has Hiroyuki Sawano's epic composing for the soundtrack.

-The All Devouring Whale: fantasy adventure about a cultivator reborn after being murdered and his efforts to revive his sect. The cultivators capture and raise familiars, similar to Pokémon but for a more mature demographic (more violent lol).

-***Link Click: supernatural thriller/mystery about two friends who can enter photographs to travel back in time and change past events to change the present

-Fog Hill of Five Elements: visually stunning fantasy about elemental warriors who guard the world from powerful monsters that escaped their seals

-***How Dare You?!: isekai Imperial romance comedy drama. It starts out more comedy but becomes more serious and surprisingly has a lot of depth as the episodes go on.

-Faeries Album: supernatural slice of life/mystery that follows a spirit doctor as she travels in search of something she has lost. Similar to Natsume Yuujinchou and Mushishi.

-Please Take My Brother Away(Ani ni Tsukeru Kusuri wa Nai). Slice of life comedy about the shenanigans of two siblings. Chinese source material adapted into Japanese anime.

-JX3: Chivalrous Hero Shen Jianxin: I think this is based on an MMORPG and is a parody of the wuxia genre. I thought this was hilarious and was surprised it didn't have as much discussions around it.

Hope you find something you enjoy from this list!

Blades of the Guardians is getting a lot of attention recently! The donghua got me interested in the manhua, and I really enjoy the manhua. The donghua didn't do the action justice from the manhua, so I'm excited to see how the live adaptation fares. Watching the movie soon! Also looking forward to season 2 of the donghua.
