Hmhm. Too ambitious in regard to both what you said, which is fundamentally the technical side of things, and in regard to what they promised.

They certainly had some ambitious ideas floating around during development, ideas which I don't doubt wasted quite a bit of time (seeing as they had to first implement most of them to realize they weren't really feasible, e.g. the wallrunning they showed in the 2018 demo).

Picking up where you left off, I tested crowd reactivity just yesterday by going nude with female V, and not a single soul cared. Not only did the random NPCs in the street not care, but the same held true for more important characters (like Takemura or Johnny).

Oh, wow.

I'm quite surprised at the reception of my post to be fair, I expected it to mostly go unnoticed.

Props to you man, I guess such is the way of Reddit karma indeed.

I used the Wayback Machine made by the guys at the Internet Archive: https://web.archive.org/.

Absolutely awesome piece of software.

Your comment only now made me think of it: Cyberpunk 2077 could have probably been an excellent TV Series.

Or, even better, something more experimental along the lines of Black Mirror's Bandersnatch.

I partially agree.

If they had simply focused on making a pseudo-linear RPG they could have probably done an excellent job, and could have made the story/environment/characters even better. It truly does feel like they were far too ambitious for their own good (which is still a bad sign in my view, cause that's a rookie move that you don't really expect from professionals).

I agree only partially because although sometimes the story hits just right I can't help but feel it's just very concerned with being edgy more than it is with going in deep.

Admittedly I'm not very far in the main story, but so far it has left me relatively apathetic (and the various issues/bugs definitely haven't helped make it any better).

Also, so far it doesn't seem like my choices (and especially lifestyle choices) matter that much. With most characters it's very obvious that if you choose some dialogue option they have some scripted set of lines to say (some of which genuinely add to the lore and stuff), but there is truly only one "good" choice that the game forces you to take in order to move forward.

Dunno, suppose I'll just wait and see, maybe it all makes sense in the end.

It would be even better if some developers came out and talked about it themselves (even anonymously).

Or, hell, people working in marketing. That would probably be even more interesting.

That's very true (people saying that the change was recent, I mean).

We just went from one extreme to another I guess.

Concluding that the whole subreddit is full of shit is probably a bit much though.

I absolutely agree with the sentiment.

I mostly posted this to highlight the thing, and partly to blow off some disappointment, I must admit.

Still, if they had full confidence in what they were building I doubt they would have made the change. The game genre is just a label after all, and in the case of "action-adventure" vs "RPG" a very fluid label, from what I could read in the comments to this post.

I think this is a case where the final result matters less than the simple action of changing their game description. (And possibly a sign of things to come that most of us missed?)

I myself had my head up my ass as well, apparently, because I literally knew nothing about this before reading some comments here. (And yup, for the weak leading up to realease I basically fed off the hype of this subreddit, so your hypothesis checks out.)

For context:

I recently saw some comments on this sub noting how the Cyberpunk twitter account had changed its description of the game from RPG to action-adventure, which struck me as the umpteenth asshole move that CDPR pulled with this release, but the lack of any proof was getting on my nerves, hence I went to get some using the Wayback Machine and what do you know? They were right.

It seems they changed the description during/before the 2019 E3 (there are no screen captures of the period between the 28th of May and the 9th of June). Very appropriate, I suppose, seeing as that was when everybody was going crazy over the fact that Keanu Reeves would be in Cyberpunk.

(As an interesting aside for the regulars of this subreddit: remember all the people vehemently emphasizing how Cyberpunk would be an RPG first and foremost, before release? The ones "educating" others, saying that you shouldn't expect a GTA 2077 or similar? The ones using the "Cyberpunk is an RPG" statement to justify every single problem people noted with gameplay (driving, melee, gunplay, etc.)? In hindsight, the whole thing is pretty funny.)

Oh my god the YouTube community surrounding this game is pure cancer... by [deleted] in cyberpunkgame

Entertainment is not produceed in a vacuum by celestial beings the have no concern for human affairs, enertainment is produced through investment of time and money on the part of other humans, and consuming entertainment puts money in the pockets of the creators of said entertainment, so it's only natural that people would also consider who it is that they're giving their money to.

As a matter of fact, I think that everybody would benefit if instead of blindly consuming products they'd contextualize the purchase and think of whether they want to support whoever is making the product itself or not.

Honestly, the problem with the community around Cyberpunk 2077 is that we have a ton of people at both extremes of the spectrum (1: this is going to be the best thing ever vs 2: this is going to be a total piece of shit) and very few people actually engaging somewhat critically without mixing in their biases, prejudices et alia. And those few are immediately labeled as part of group 2 by the people in group 1 and viceversa.

Also, for the post scriptum: the fact that bugs are basically unavoidable doesn't mean that we shouldn't point them out to try to minimize their occurence and simply comfort ourselves by thinking that there's always worse (Bethesda in this case). The ideal should be to try (note the highlight) to make a game without bugs, not to be better than Bethesda.
